Keep it simple.

Doing a quick scan of the Front Page there are 3 blocks of information:

  1.  Front Page Diaries
  2.  User Diaries - Recommended, Debate, Recent
  3.  Banner - Navagation Aids

You can add two more blocks before the site will start to create information overload for the new or casual user.
