Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

I don't know yet. I wanted to buy a ticket for the new TGV last week, which starts runing on the 10th of June, but its more or less already booked out, as the 15th is the first weekend after it's start. Looks like many Swiss want to spend that weekend in Paris. Also the number of trains has been reduced. And non-TGV connections are difficult and time-consuming, and the flight tickets are difficult too, as I have to travel back on Sunday. So hopefully this week I have some more time to finding a ticket.

I would really like to go too, but the same issues, since it would be though Zurich/Basel. Hmm...rent a car? Must think more on this...

Hmn. I hope is a Zurich/Basil peculiarity, I didn't know it might be difficult obtaining ticks. Hmn, hmn, hmn.

Well, if I can get ticks, it looks like I could get in at 11.25 and leave at 19.10. Is this enough time? When will the meeting occur? Will it be close to the railway station? Otherwise I would have to stay in a hotel and leave the next day. But then I would have to find a hotel. Bah. This is exactly why I hate travelling. It's so complicated!

It's about half an hour from the train station, so the times you indicate should be perfect. If you want to stay longer, there's small hotel just around the corner at 75 eur/night. I'll give you the details if you need them.

LEP found this website:  Last Minute Hotel Deals - Rates To Go

My friend recommended the Houses - Paris: 90 euros/night (two night minimum).  You need to email them (resa@thehouses-paris.com) to reserve.  My friend's comments:

It's a simple, small, cute apartment with a kitchenette, about 30 meters squ., great, generous-sized shower (none of that tiny plastic shell stuff.)

It is located in a ruelle/through-alley which is one of the secret gems of paris. It is really, really special. My Parisian friends were delighted and impressed, as the neighborhood has been until recently, traditionally immigrant and working class. There were so many Parisian 'tourists' making urban pilgrimages here to 'discover the countryside' in paris, even people leaving contact names on the building doors asking people to contact them if they wanted to sell.

The problem is, it's about an 8 minute walk in any direction to one of 2 or 3 metro stops. No problem if you don't mind walking.

Also, Homelidays (though a quick search indicates that most [if not all] offerings are by the week, rather than the night.)

Anyone know of any other such possibilities?

You might consider the night train?

Thanks Nanne, but almost 10 hours for a trip that now can be done in 31/2 hours, including 3 hours waiting to change the train in the middle of the in an empty train station in Germany is not my idea of having fun. I must be getting old. :-)

I don't know why there are no direct trains at night to Switzerland, all night trains include changing in Karlsruhe.

Yeah, it's strange. I'm coming directly from Berlin on the night train and it's almost as quick as from Zürich.

Night trains have to last over the night : you don't want to arrive at your destination at 3.30 am, do you ?

Definitely. But you can play with the time of departure. My train is leaving at 21:00, but you could also leave at, say, 00:30.

There's also the need to be able to have a full night sleep, which is why it is leaving early... Also, some train stations pactically close after a certain time. Very few intercity trains leave Paris after 10 pm...

When that happens with a sleeper, they usually place it in a quiet siding to let passengers sleep on till a more reasonable hour.
