But can the physics there do anything useful?

Can't resist a final quip ... if it could destroy the Earth, that would be the ultimate in usefulness, such destruction being a certain improvement upon the current state of affairs.

Sorry that physics can't that easily deliver this, but some dozen Hydrogen fusion bombs may do it already with current technology.
