Imagine if these five authors were even occasional participants at this site. What an advantage that would be!
Sending invitations never hurts... I could, for instance, imagine regular invitations from ET to a number of influential writers / thinkers for commentary on a certain current event.
ET needs an assistant...
Does nothing escape your keen powers of observation?!?! Yes---all in French; well, what can I say? it turns out that I had no control over that. ;^)
You wanted E-e-e-e-e-e-engl-e-e-e-e-sh language Books of the Year? For 2009? Okay, there are some--probably. But, for my money, this Year's Books of the Year 2009, were all written previously.
For example, John Maynard Keynes for his book, The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money (Paperback) from 1937
and
Adam Ferguson for his book, An Essay on the History of Civil Society, from 1767---still ahead of his time. [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Ferguson ] But, unlike the authors I mentioned above, neither of them are available for contemporary participation here.
As for books in English published this year, the I guess I'd have to say the "best" (by default, though it's very good even so) is George A. Akerlof and Robert J. Shiller for their book, Animal Spirits: How Human Psychology Drives the Economy, and Why It Matters for Global Capitalism (Hardcover), 2009 from Princeton University Press. http://www.amazon.com/Animal-Spirits-Psychology-Economy-Capitalism/dp/0691142335/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8& amp;s=books&qid=1257166896&sr=1-1
Others I read this year--and very good---were not published this year. I recommend them though:
Daniel L. Everett for his book, Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes: Life and Language in the Amazonian Jungle , 2008, (my copy is the U.K. Profile Books edition). [ this one isn't: http://www.amazon.com/Dont-Sleep-There-Are-Snakes/dp/0307386120/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&q id=1257167153&sr=1-1 ]
Philip Delves Broughton, for his book, What They Teach You at Harvard Business School: My Two Years Inside the Cauldron of Capitalism , 2008, Penguin Books; the U.S. edition is called Ahead of the Curve: Two Years at Harvard Business School; http://www.amazon.com/Ahead-Curve-Harvard-Business-School/dp/014311543X/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_3
Benoit Madelbrot (main author) and Richard L. Hudson for their book, The (Mis)behavior of Markets: A Fractal View of Financial Turbulence , 2008, Basic Books, New York ; http://www.amazon.com/Misbehavior-Markets-Fractal-Financial-Turbulence/dp/0465043577/ref=sr_1_1?ie=U TF8&s=books&qid=1257167770&sr=1-1
and, hardly least,
Edward O. Wilson, for his now-classic book, On Human Nature Revised edition, 2004, from Harvard University Press. http://www.amazon.com/Human-Nature-Edward-O-Wilson/dp/0674016386/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books& qid=1257168813&sr=1-1 "In such an environment it is not surprising that the ills of technology should seem curable only through the application of more technology..." John W Aldridge
Daniel L. Everett for his book, Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes: Life and Language in the Amazonian Jungle , 2008
This one sounds like fun.
As you may note, I´m an economic lightweight and prefer to stay that way!
Still. If, say, Emmanuel Todd indeed wrote one of the best books of 2009, translations would be welcome...
That is quite likely, in fact.
See: http://www.amazon.com/Emmanuel-Todd/e/B001IXQD6S/ref=sr_tc_2_0
After the Empire: The Breakdown of the American Order (European Perspectives: A Series in Social Thought and Cultural Criticism) (Paperback)
Daniel Everett's book, by the way, is nothing short of brilliant. "In such an environment it is not surprising that the ills of technology should seem curable only through the application of more technology..." John W Aldridge
It's Mandelbrot, with an "n", not "Madelbrot". "In such an environment it is not surprising that the ills of technology should seem curable only through the application of more technology..." John W Aldridge
