I was born there, lived most of my life there, and still don't understand the refractory combination of ignorance and avarice that dominates the political system, and the owns the souls of a solid majority of the public. It's been a democratically elected one party state since 1971.

As a student of the particular part of the boreal now being destroyed by the Tar Sands and in-situ heavy oil operations (and other factors), I can tell you that nothing Mr. Nikiforuk reports could possibly exaggerate the horrible truth.

I will still read the book, though.
