the conventional wisdom seems to be that while the Japanese don't like the fact that the American military occupies prime real estate all over their country, causes noise pollution, threatens if not already harms environmentally sensitive areas, intermittently rapes underage local girls, and gets a huge chunk of it paid for by Japanese taxpayers, its presence is the lesser of two evils, by far, where the other evil is being forced to take on responsibility for its own self-defense where all of its neighbors are still wary of any increase in Japanese military build-up.

And the only way to change this situation would be to amend Article 9 of Japan's constitution.

If you can't pay the bills, it's not sustainable.
