I have only experienced the effect via sound reproduction, but elephants communicate through the brush via infra-sound. Our company once had a contract to provide a sound system for the Sigfried and Roy act in Vegas. It involved using servo driven low frequency speakers that can reproduce significant sound pressure levels below 20Hz. The speakers consist of horn loaded panels about 1m high by .5m wide that are attached to servo motors. The effect is felt in your body.

They never were put into the act. We got paid, but the sounds freaked the tigers, so it was a no go. One step too far for realism.
