Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Covered sidewalks in arcades to protect against, what, the sun? The rain?

Both...

Fascinating how the British colonialists took their architectural ideas to so many places around the world...

Yes, obviously...

It is also obvious that I am an old person but sign me in for this any day, comparing and opposed  to this :

Well, one good thing about Australia is that everybody lives in five cities, and the rest of the continent is empty. So if you want emptiness, it's a pretty good choice. Hobart for me.

Yeah...but unless you are rich and you can choose where to live and you can just play golf and sit in a Country club and check how much you "earned" today on a share market, you need to live in those cities, because all the jobs are there.
While in this hotel on a Sunshine Coast I read one magazine specifically printed for local people (it was on a table in this tree house) . The name was Profile , I think. Here:
http://www.profilemag.com.au/
Now you can see there that all those rich people on Sunshine Coast care about is how to make more money trough "investments" in properties and shares so they can live their lavish life styles endlessly...
All the adds and half of the magazines are from so called "financial advisers" and they swear they can teach you how to multiply your money without work...
Being poor is even harder in those remote arias...
Being rich gives you all the choices...

Yeah, well, being part of the 1% is sort of a requirement for pretty much anything these days...
