Where were you living? They've never been common in the places I've lived - Minneapolis, Boston, and San Francisco. There were often a few per summer in Minneapolis due to thuderstorms, but they were otherwise rare.

Small town Arkansas. Ice storms are the worst. Survived this one with no outages, but the above ground electric distribution leaves the system vulnerable. At least once a year a neighborhood or more goes dark for hours because of a traffic accident. Or a drunk hits a power pole, etc. As I recall, we had fewer outages in Whizbang, Oklahoma while I was a schoolboy. We have Entergy.
