The United States on Friday called for an urgent, international mediation mission to the Crimea to de-escalate tensions in the region following an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council.

"The United States calls for an urgent, international mediation mission to the Crimea to begin to de-escalate the situation and facilitate productive and peaceful dialogue among all Ukranian parties," said US ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power.

Moscow is against externally imposed mediation in Ukraine's Crimea - Russia's UN envoy...Russia's Permanent Representative in the UN Vitaly Churkin said after an informal meeting at the Security Council that Russia is against an imposed mediation with the aim of settling the situation in the Crimea.

No need for mediation. There is no one hurt or dead, everything is normal...and also we have seen what happened last time whit their " mediation". So called agreement didn't last until ink dried...

Russia's UN envoy also pointed to the agreement of 21 February as the key to resolving the Ukraine crisis.

"The best way to resolve the crisis is to look hard" at the agreement signed one week ago, said Vitaly Churkin, the Russian ambassador to the United Nations, in a news conference following the emergency security council meeting.

When asked about Russia's willingness to intervene militarily, Churkin laughed.

"Really, even the question is aggravating!" he said.

Hah , they learned the lesson from their western counterparts...What do you get from his answer about military intervention? I am puzzled...

Well, I think his response is intended to avoid being called a liar next week, when the Russian military intervene overtly "for humanitarian reasons" or "to protect the Russian minority from aggression".

So far, the Ukranian forces seem to have avoided responding to the Russian provocations (airports etc...), but the Russians can easily manufacture incidents to justify intervention in Crimea (for a start).
