Unidentified gunmen from Kiev made an attempt to seize the building of the Interior Ministry in Crimea in the early hours of March 1, Russia's Foreign Ministry said. The attempt was thwarted by the Simferopol self-defense squads, but several people have been injured as a result of the clashes.

"This attempt confirms the intention of prominent political circles in Kiev to destabilize the situation on the peninsula," the ministry's statement reads. "We call on those in Kiev who give such orders to exercise restraint. We consider it highly irresponsible to further aggravate the tense situation in Crimea."
