Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.
The State of Kansas has enacted a new law, HB 2409, that requires state contractors to certify that they are not engaged in boycotts of Israel. An official with the Kansas State Department of Education ("KSDE") told Plaintiff Esther Koontz that she would have to certify that she is not currently engaged in a boycott of Israel in order to receive a contract to work as a trainer in the statewide teacher training program. In adherence to calls for boycott made by her church and her congregation, Ms. Koontz refuses to purchase consumer goods and services offered by Israeli companies and international companies operating in Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. When Ms. Koontz responded that she could not sign the certification in good conscience, the state refused to contract with her. The Act violates the First Amendment by requiring Ms. Koontz and other state contractors to certify their non-participation in protected political expression and association. Because the Act engages in speaker-based discrimination and burdens fundamental First Amendment rights, it also violates the Equal Protection Clause.

This is a clever test case. It'll go the distance and drive ScaLito and Unc' Tom insane.

This morning in Bal'more, local radio show has discovered "Trump's religious exemption order". ( No word yet in the village about "Trump's religious ambassador to the world", Mr Brownback; still time to acquire yer hazmat gear.)

Outside group readies lawsuit on Trump's religious exemption order May 2017

Host and "experts" can barely acknowledge that Trump's executive order to DHHS and DoJ conforms with SCOTUS opinion and orders under Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., the religious freedom restoration act, and "conscience clause" exemptions adopted by 50+1% of US states.
< wipes tears >
More disturbing than even the living-dead-dispute, "IUD, abortifacient?", this cohort of interlocutors wants to --yet seems incapable of-- articulate a distinction between "moral" and "religious" doctrine/ethics/faith/belief/spirituality [?!!]; then there's the amoral dissenter claiming Trump's executive order is neither, but a "political stunt" ... because "american values" are all about "live and let live"; finally, a claim has advanced that no one can choose where he or she works.

Can't wait for Koontz v. Watson a/k/a Trial of The Covenant to hit the media in the kiester. Next year?

Way too many people in this country are nuts. They need more Russian spies to created division and chaos in THEIR MINDS.

Producers at WYPR turfed the religious freedom ambassador news to the next scheduled talk show "Mid-day"(after 1/2 hour of "Are computing devices adversely affecting 'our' cognitive abilities?!!"). Guest questions Brownback's fitness for office, comparative theology, and duty to US duty to protect "minority religious", not the office.

WAITING for any body to mention ESTABLISHMENT CLAUSE of the US fucking Constitution ...

Trump Picks Sam Brownback as Religious Freedom Ambassador JULY 2017
(I hasten to say, christianitytoday.com is currently the first item in the list returned by yahoo!.com, not my preferred "news" source.)

Let us note: This office, Dept of State (paradoxically), executive branch is NOT new. Mr Obama appointed several persons in his two terms, for example.

US Congress established the office in Frank R. Wolf International Religious Freedom Act (1998). Legal challenges to federal establishment of US authority (1st Amd. prohibition) to legitimize any or all religion are unknown. The US Dept of State affirms, "promoting religious freedom as a core objective of U.S. foreign policy."

Being a (nominal) convert to the Holy Roman See ("state") AND a trenchant proponent of US military hegemony, Mr. Brownback is a fit appointee.
