Yes, the US is some way ahead of that curve, with almost unparalleled levels of inequality and political dysfunction. Not quite Somalia, but a far cry from where it was as recently as the 1990's.

The UK, too, has overcome major crises during World wars I and II. But what characterised those crises was almost unparalleled national unity and community spirit.

What I think Helen fears is not only severely reduced standards of living for those already least able to afford it, but major increases in crime and civil disorder - and not just in coal mining communities as in the past.

For a country which has recently been one of the wealthiest and most stable in the World, that is a long way to fall.
