Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Developing my comment in the MEGA diary:

Frank:

Brexit sets up a very dangerous dynamic whereby both the UK and the EU have a vested interest in securing their own stability by seeing the other fail.

This presupposes a symmetry between the UK and the EU27 which is simply not there: Brexit has been built as an anti-EU project. Brexiters need their nemesis to keep their boat floating.

The EU, on the other hand, doesn't need anything specific from the UK: they merely need to keep protecting the four freedoms within the EU countries.

In addition, the EU is not renowned for strong and decisive strategic thinking. They would be challenged strategizing their way out of a paper bag; kicking the can down the road, whenever possible, is one of the longest running EU traditions.

In short: yes, the EU and UK will be enemies, but one side is playing offense, while the other (the strongest) defense.
