Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

A phrase used by a Roman writer to deplore the declining heroism of Romans after the Roman Republic ceased to exist ...

'Bread and circuses' could strike down Britain like it did Rome

Shakespeare's Julius Caesar (spoken by Marc Antony)

    Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
    I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
    The evil that men do lives after them;
    The good is oft interred with their bones;
    So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus
    Hath told you Caesar was ambitious:
    If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
    And grievously hath Caesar answer'd it.
    Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest-
    For Brutus is an honourable man;
    So are they all, all honourable men-
    Come I to speak in Caesar's funeral.
    He was my friend, faithful and just to me:
    But Brutus says he was ambitious;
    And Brutus is an honourable man.
    He hath brought many captives home to Rome
    Whose ransoms did the general coffers fill:
    Did this in Caesar seem ambitious?
    When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept:

    [...]

    I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke,
    But here I am to speak what I do know.
    You all did love him once, not without cause:
    What cause withholds you then, to mourn for him?
    O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts,
    And men have lost their reason. Bear with me;
    My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar,
    And I must pause till it come back to me.

A Brexit poem:

    Labour is red / Tories are blue.
    Our future is bright
    with a good deal in sight /
    For the UK and our friends in the EU.

In search of quality and integrity in today's politicians .... good luck!

Brexit the Sequel - poem II

    ...
    And what, for gods sake, did she say:
    Here I present my Friend, the Boris
    We say: O tempora o mores
    He's the one who changed his mind
    on Brexit like no other kind.
    Of course, there were so many liars
    They handed out a million fliers
    stored thousands more in a garage
    whose owner was Nigel Farage.
    He tricked them all - exaggerated,
    the airwaves were all saturated
    with news that were, well, really fake
    although there was so much at stake!
