Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.
The USA has pretty much abdicated the Arctic.  The US Navy has zero ice breakers.  The US Coast Guard has three, each of which is at the end of its useful lifetime.  Contracts are out for five new ice breakers but Russia now has about 42, by my count.  China has six.  Greenpeace has one.

US Arctic scientists have been lobbying for more Northern infrastructure to support the necessary research they are doing.  Little or no icebreaker support or air support is now available.  About a decade ago I went to a conference on the Arctic at MIT where these issues came up.  I wonder if anything has really changed.
