Dutch official corona death toll hits 1,487, but real total is higher | Dutch News | The number of patients admitted to hospital with coronavirus has risen by 502 to 6,286 in the latest update from the public health institute RIVM. In total, 148 more people have died, taking the death toll to 1,487, while 15,723 people have tested positive for the virus, a rise of over 1,000 on Thursday. Figures published by the national statistics office CBS on Friday indicate that coronavirus is having a significant impact on the wider weekly death figures which the two agencies have compiled since the 2009 flu epidemic. Figures relating to the period 19-25 March indicate that between 870 and 1181 more people died than would have been expected, the RIVM said. At this time of year, some 2,700 to 3,000 people die every week.

U.S. Ambassador lashes out at China over coronavirus transparency | NL Times | American ambassador to the Netherlands Pete Hoekstra lashed out at China and the information it provided about the coronavirus in an interview with Dutch newspaper AD. According to Hoekstra, China did not give the world reliable data about Covid-19 and is still not being transparent about the actual number of coronavirus infections and deaths in the country. "The world could have responded to this much more efficiently if China had been more transparent. Even now we don't see the transparency we would like to see. When we see how the disease develops in Europe and in the US, the trend is somewhat different from what we hear from China," Hoekstra said to the newspaper.
