Joe Biden has to fight fascism and save America, but he can't. He can't even prosecute anyone for attacking the damn Capitol. He can't even deliver a $2,000 check. America is still quite fucked. America's deep problems aren't going to be executive ordered away.

[...]

You wonder how Germans fell into fascism, but then you look at America today. Compared to America, the Germans really tried. Germany arrested Hitler in 1924, centrists tried ruling by Presidential decree for a while, and then the Nazis came roaring back in 1932. The process took eight years.

Americans might still be wearing masks in 2022; world may never reach herd immunity
The projection comes as the U.S. expects to surpass 500,000 deaths within the next two days and Dr. Anthony Fauci says it's "possible" that Americans will still be wearing masks in 2022.
[...]
"While it's possible to reach herd immunity by next winter, it seems increasingly unlikely we will do so, and in light of that we all need to shift our expectations," IHME says.

Two FBI agents killed and three agents injured in shootout in Sunrise, Florida
(CNN)Two FBI agents were fatally shot and three agents were wounded in a shootout as they executed a search warrant in Sunrise, Florida, on Tuesday morning, the FBI said.
The subject of the warrant is dead, the FBI said in a statement.
The shooting occurred at about 6 a.m. as a team of law enforcement officers executed the federal court-ordered search warrant as part of a violent crimes against children case, according to a statement from FBI Miami Special Agent Michael D. Leverock and spokesman Jim Marshall.

Two of the injured FBI agents were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition, while the third injured agent was not hospitalized, officials said.

NYT: How Democrats Planned for Doomsday

The video call was announced on short notice, but more than 900 people quickly joined: a coalition of union officials and racial justice organizers, civil rights lawyers and campaign strategists, pulled together in a matter of hours after the Jan. 6 attack on Capitol Hill.

900! How anyone thought Orange Man and his merry band of buffaloes stood a chance is beyond me.

Since the violence of Jan. 6, progressive leaders have not deployed large-scale public protests at all.

"Deployed." Did NYT give us a glimpse behind the curtain? Or are they simply bragging?

QAnon's most dedicated followers still believe that former President Donald Trump will soon be sworn in.

They insist that Trump will return to power and be inaugurated in Washington, DC, on March 4.

Coincidentally, the Trump International Hotel in Washington, DC, has hiked the prices of suites around that day. Some room rates at the hotel, just blocks from the White House, have almost tripled for March 3 and 4, Forbes' Suzanne Rowan Kelleher reported.

Supreme Court allows release of Trump's tax returns to NY prosecutors
Monday's ruling concerns a subpoena that Vance had issued to Trump's accountants Mazars USA in August 2019 ordering it to furnish documents stretching back to 2011.

"The work continues," Vance said in a three-word statement issued after the ruling.

Vance's probe was initially focused on payments made before the 2016 presidential election to two women who claim they had affairs with Trump, including porn star Stormy Daniels.

But the state-level investigation is also now examining possible allegations of tax evasion, and insurance and bank fraud.

The spot price of wholesale electricity on the Texas power grid spiked more than 10,000% on Monday amid a deep freeze across the state and rolling outages among power producers, according to data on the grid operator's website.

Real-time wholesale market prices on the power grid operated by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) were more than $9,000 per megawatt hour late Monday morning, compared with pre-storm prices of less than $50 per megawatt hour, according to ERCOT data.

Peak Gas Is Coming to the U.S. Sooner Than Anyone Expected
Renewables, meanwhile, still carried the stigma of hippie-ish science experiments that depended on government support and couldn't provide around-the-clock electricity as long as the sun set and the wind ebbed. But the arrival of big-storage batteries has meant that wind and solar power will slowly be less dependent on the whims of weather, calling into question assumptions that there would be plenty of need for new gas alongside renewables. Solar farms backed up by batteries are already beating out gas on costs in parts of the U.S. Southwest , thanks in part to sharply falling prices of lithium-ion systems.

Icy blast of anti-Ted Cruz outrage shows little sign of abating

Wintry conditions eased in Texas on Friday, but a storm of outrage continued to build over Senator Ted Cruz's quick trip to Cancún, Mexico, at a time when millions of his constituents were still stranded without heat, food and water.

"Texans' anger with Ted Cruz right now could power an entire electrical grid," a Houston Chronicle editorial blasted. "He plopped himself down on a direct flight to paradise and left us to fend for ourselves in this frozen hell."
