According to b on Moon of Alabama -site the elders of Panjshir valley advised Ahmad Massoud to not fight Taliban there.

With no local support Massoud pledged allegiance to Taliban shortly, while Amrullah Saleh still vows to continue fight. He did get an op-ed in Washington Post on short notice, so he must think he's a big player still.

How he's going to keep on fighting without much of a support in the middle of a country really tired of war is anyone's guess.

Taliban confirms 'hundreds' of its fighters heading for Panjshir Valley

The province is a stronghold of the Northern Alliance fighters who joined with the US to topple the Taliban in 2001, and Ahmad Massoud, the son of a famous Northern Alliance commander assassinated days before the 9/11 attacks, has appeared in videos from there.

"If Taliban warlords launch an assault, they will of course face staunch resistance from us," Massoud told Al Arabiya. But he also expressed openness to dialogue with the Taliban.
