'A backwards betrayal': Biden Title IX proposal draws criticism from LGBTQ community
...LGBTQ Americans and their allies have had mixed reactions to the administration's proposed changes. While some are celebrating the possibility of a NEW! federal civil rights law prohibiting laws that bar transgender students from participating in school sports, others say the proposal is a disappointing departure from prior actions and statements made by the Biden White House in support of equal rights for transgender people.
"He could have just done nothing," [Harvard Law School's Cyberlaw Clinic instructor Alejandrx] Caraballx wrote. "This is legitimizing transphobia."
In a post on Twitter late Thursday, Rep. Alexandrix Ocasix-Cortez (D-N.Y.) called the proposal "embarrassing" and urged the Education Department to reverse course. "Absolutely no reason for the Biden admin to do this. It is indefensible and embarrassing," Ocasix-Cortez wrote. "The admin can still walk this back, and they should. It's a disgrace."
Here is a solution: Demand Congress to repeal Title IX entirely. Enact shirts, no skins, for everyone. Win-win.

US: California lawmaker faces Islamophobic attacks for introducing anti-caste bill, 3 Apr nation of immigrants seeking fweedom from persecution in diverse ancestral homelands
... If the bill is approved, California will become the first state to adopt legislation banning caste discrimination. The city of Seattle did so earlier this year in February. However, several Hindu [!] American groups have pushed back on these efforts, saying that such measures specifically target and malign their community. Wahab, who was born to refugees who fled Afghanistan [!] in the 1980s [!], told the news magazine that many people with Islamophobic intent [!] like to attack her based on her last name.

"My last name is Wahab, so they [?] love to tie it to Wahhabism, or call me a jihadist or a Talibani. Basically, every racial slur and dog whistle," Wahab told Time.

Caste discrimination has been banned in India [!] since 1948, but the bias still persists. Studies in recent years have shown that people from lower castes are underrepresented in higher-paying jobs.

There have been several instances of caste-based discrimination documented in California alone, including in 2001 when a man was convicted of transporting at least 25 Indian labourers [UK-Eng. ALERT] to the US under false pretence.
Here's a solution: Embrace the US Constitution. Continue to enforce CA criminal code and lawyer up.

Who's in and who's out at Biden's democracy summit (31.03.23)

whitehouse | Remarks by President Biden at the Summit for Democracy Virtual Plenary on Democracy Delivering on Global Challenges, 29 Mar

... Look, all we know, it's not easy.  It's not -- this has never been easy.  Democracy is hard work.  The work of democracy is never finished.  It's never laid down and that's it, all you have to do.  It must be protected constantly.
At the first Summit of Democracy, I launched the Presidential Initiative for Democratic Renewal, committed more than $400 million to shore up transparent and accountable governance, support for media freedom, to fight for international—fighting international corruption, stand with democracy and democratic reformers, promote technology that advances democracy, defend elections....

Black unemployment is at a RECORD LOW -- but 'horrible' work conditions still ensnare many, 12 Apr
Black unemployment has fallen, but a gap still persists

Friday's jobs report showed the [U-3] unemployment rate tick down to 3.5 percent from 3.6 percent as the economy added 236,000 jobs in March.

The unemployment rate for Black workers dropped to 5 percent from 5.7 percent, or about 1.1 million people -- the lowest rate on record, according to [BLS] data compiled reported by the St. Louis Federal Reserve.

One of the reasons labor conditions for people with criminal records can be so bad is that not much is actually known [?!] about them  as a segment of the population, which makes it difficult for lawmakers to design laws and policies that serve their needs.

Whose needs?

Black rates are higher at all alternative measures of labor underutilization

For all of the alternative measures, the rate for Blacks was higher in 2019 than for the population overall. The broadest alternative measure, U-6, was μ 11.0 percent for Blacks, compared with 7.2 percent for the over[]all population.

whitehouse | Key decisions and challenges surrounding the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, 12 pp after-action REVIEW

... President Biden's choices for how to execute a withdrawal from Afghanistan were severely constrained by conditions created by his predecessor. When President TRUMP took office in 2017, there were more than 10,000 troops in Afghanistan. Eighteen months later, after introducing more than 3,000 additional troops just to maintain the stalemate, President TRUMP ordered direct talks with the Taliban without consulting with our allies and partners or allowing the Afghan government at the negotiating table. In September 2019, President TRUMP EMBOLDED the Taliban by PUBLICLY CONSIDERING inviting them to Camp David on the anniversary of 9/11. In February 2020, the United States and the Taliban reached a deal, known as the Doha Agreement, under which the United States agreed to withdraw all U.S. forces from Afghanistan by May 2021.
Over his last 11 months in office, President TRUMP ordered a series of drawdowns of U.S. troops. By June 2020, President Trump reduced U.S. troops in Afghanistan to 8,600. In September 2020, he directed a further draw down to 4,500. A month later, President TRUMP tweeted, to the surprise of military advisors, that the remaining U.S. troops in Afghanistan should be "home by Christmas!"

Press Briefing by Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby, 11-13 Apr ancestral home itinerary
MR. KIRBY:  Thank you, Karine.

Afternoon, everybody. So, as Karine just mentioned, the President is traveling to the United Kingdom and Ireland this week. And as I think you all also know, he's very excited for this trip and has been now for quite some time.

Tomorrow [11 Apr] he will depart for Belfast, where he'll be greeted upon arrival at the airport by Prime Minister Sunak, who he also just saw last month in San Diego at the AUKUS announcement.

On Wednesday, President Biden will meet with Prime Minister Sunak bilaterally.  From there, President Biden will head to Ulster University to deliver remarks marking the tremendous progress since the signing of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement 25 years ago.  And he'll underscore the readiness of the United States to preserve those gains and support Northern Ireland's vast economic potential to the benefit of all communities.

Ulster U. (NI), Co. Louth (IE), Dublin (IE), Co. Mayo (IE)
He will then deliver remarks at St. Muredach's Cathedral, which his great-great-grandfather -- great-great-great-grandfather -- sorry -- Edward Blewitt sold 27,000 bricks to in 1827. Those bricks were used to construct and support the great cathedral and helped Edward afford to buy tickets for himself and for his family to sail together to America decades later in 1851.
< wipes tears >
Despite his French surname and hailing from Pennsylvania, settled by German colonists, Biden claims Irish ancestry and Roman Catholic faith.

But British domestic intelligence agency MI5 has already uncovered a bomb plot by Irish Republican Army splinter group the New IRA. The US president will travel with a huge Secret Service security detail, reportedly packing an arsenal of over 300 firearms and a motorcade of up to 40 bullet-poof cars. Biden will be welcomed to the city by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak -- whose name he has repeatedly mispronounced as "Rashid Sunook."

The President is very much looking forward to that trip, again, and to celebrating the deep, historic ties that our two countries and our two people continue to share.

With that, I'll take some questions.

House passes $1.5 trillion debt limit increase, spending cuts
House Democrats all voted against the bill, arguing that Congress should raise the debt limit without conditions. They also slammed the spending cuts in the bill, saying they would have a massive impact on government programs Americans depend on from health care and nutrition services to education and infrastructure.
Debt Is (Mostly) Money We Owe to Ourselves
The debt limit "x date"  -- when the Treasury Department is at risk of running out of cash and wiggle room [techTalk!] under the borrowing cap to pay bondholders and other obligations -- will hit as early as June. The exact timing will depend in large part on tax receipts the Treasury is still analyzing, but the department plans to release an updated forecast later this week or next.

The Senate is planning to ignore House Republicans' bill, but will be under pressure to either negotiate or act on an alternative plan. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer offered no indication Wednesday that the House vote would change his negotiating posture.

"What this means, I believe, is that a country with its own currency would not be subject to the kind of self-fulfilling panic that is now arguably hitting Italy."

"We think what Speaker McCarthy and the House have done is going to bring us closer to default, not further away from it," the New York Democrat said.

insider | House Speaker Kevin McCarthy finally won his battle against letting members vote remotely. It could cost him critical GOP votes when he needs it most, 26 Jan
...At a time when a Speaker would ideally like to have the chance to guarantee the votes and backing of absent members, he's given away one of the best tools a Speaker had to nail down votes of the ill, the absent, the traveling, the unreliable, and those distracted by other ambitions. It could end up costing him....
bipartisanpolicy | Absent Senators: Pairs, Proxies, and Procedure, 29 Mar
...Proxy voting is currently not permitted in the Senate for roll call votes, only during committee business. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, as the Senate searched for ways to continue operating amid social distancing and other health precautions, Senators Rob Portman (R-68) and Richard Durbin (D-79) introduced a resolution allowing the use of proxy voting due to the emergency. The resolution was not agreed to.
Pairing relies on both precedent and senatorial courtesy. The practice is permitted by Senate precedents, but no senator is required to pair with an absent colleague and, therefore, is extending a courtesy to the absent member.

OPINION: Democrats' skepticism of Feinstein well-founded

Much of this distrust is centered on still-unanswered questions regarding her decision to support President George W. Bush's request for authorization to invade Iraq, which her main challenger--California State Senate leader Kevin De León--raised during his convention speech prior to the vote where he outpolled the incumbent by a sizable majority.

Following the state convention, there were a number of media analyses which claimed that Feinstein receiving only 37 percent support among convention-goers was due what was referred to as opposition by the "far left" of the party.

However, there is nothing "far left" about opposing candidates who effectively reject the prohibitions in the United Nations Charter and the Nuremburg Principles against any country invading another regardless of the humanitarian, strategic, economic and environmental consequences.
