TRT | South African delegation blocked from leaving plane in Poland A charter flight carrying security forces and journalists was blocked upon landing at Warsaw Chopin Airport on Thursday, with Polish authorities not allowing those on board to disembark, South African officials said on Friday. .... some journalists aboard the aircraft reported they had been finally allowed to disembark after more than 24 hours on the tarmac, although it was not immediately clear whether they would be allowed to travel onwards.
About 120 people were stuck on the plane, who were all on their way to a peace summit in Ukraine. Some of the passengers are now disembarking and going to a hotel. Poland's actions have left President Cyril Ramaphosa, who travelled separately to Ukraine, without some of his security detail. This prompted a furious reaction from Mr Ramaphosa's head of security, Maj Gen Wally Rhoode.
The group was held hostage for over 20 hours after being barred from disembarking from their plane at Warsaw Chopin Airport in Poland, because they failed to produce original documents for the weapons which they have carried. "We landed at the Warsaw Chopin Airport in Poland at around 13:30 on Thursday. We weren't allowed to disembark. It's now 14:07 on Friday. Can you imagine what it feels like?" tweeted Journalist Amanda Khoza who is part of the group.

On 15 June, a plane carrying members of the security team of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was detained at Warsaw Chopin Airport. The situation resulted from a failure to comply with standard entry procedures required by the Polish side. Dangerous goods were on board the plane, which South African representatives did not have permission to bring in. In addition, there were persons on board the aircraft of whose presence the Polish side had not been notified beforehand.
Air defense sirens blared Friday in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, as a delegation of African heads of state met with government leaders with hopes to broker a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko posted on social media that there was an explosion in the central Podil district. "Missiles are still flying towards Kyiv," he said on the social media platform Telegram.
South African presidential spokesman Vincent Magwenya has accused Reuters of peddling lies, after the news agency claimed that a Russian missile strike sent his delegation running for a bunker in Kiev. It was not the first time Ukrainian authorities sounded air raid sirens when foreign leaders arrived in the city. Magwenya arrived in Kiev on Friday with President Cyril Ramaphosa, who along with five other African leaders met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensk* to promote a negotiated end to the conflict with Russia. Though he leads the world's largest democracy, Modi has ruled as an autocratic-leaning Hindu nationalist whose government has overseen a crackdown on everyone from journalists to political opposition leaders as part of a larger targeting of Indian Muslims.
