Before September 2015 the West and NATO partners had supported rebels, foreign fighters, jihadists which led to a full blown civil war with over 400,000 deaths. Barbaric acts by the Islamic State rooted and created after the Iraq invasion and atrocities by U.S. Armed Forces in Abu Ghraib [WARNING: propaganda from US Army War college targeting the messenger] and Camp Bucca detention center led to an resistance force led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi that established the Islamic Caliphate in the Levant (ISIL) later joined by foreign fighters like Al Nusra Front in Northern Syria. A logistical role by NATO partner Turkey.
