AP Democratic Delegate Survey, 22 July

An Associated Press survey finds that Kamala Harris has the early backing of many of those convention delegates. The delegate survey is different from AP's count of [RNC] delegates won during the primary [2,269]. The survey is an unofficial tally, as Democratic delegates are free to vote for the candidate of their choice when the party picks its new nominee.

Under current [Democratic] party rules, a candidate will need the support of 1,976 delegates on the first ballot of that vote to win the nomination. AP will continuously update the survey leading into the opening of the Democratic National Convention on Aug. 19 in Chicago.

To help understand what will come next, The Associated Press is surveying the nearly 4,000 pledged delegates to the Democratic National Convention to determine which candidate they plan to support to be the party's presidential nominee or if they remain undecided. Results will be updated regularly.
