Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for November. Walz was chosen over Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro, who had been criticized for his attacks on pro-Palestinian student protesters.
This morning Vice President and presumptive presidential nominee Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for November's race.
Walz is in line with the mainstream of the Democratic party on Israel/Palestine. He supports a two-state solution, backed the Iran nuclear deal, and has criticized settlement expansion. He supports a ceasefire in Gaza.
He opposed the Iraq War and the Obama administration's strikes on Syria.
He spoke at AIPAC's annual policy conference in 2010. "Especially now when there is a little tension in the relationship, it's important to hear what people are thinking," he said at the time. "Israel is our truest and closest ally in the region, with a commitment to values of personal freedoms and liberties, surrounded by a pretty tough neighborhood."

Did you know that the "Twin Cities" (St Paul and Minneapolis) are sanctuary cities? I didn't. So I queried local authorities, How many of the world's asylum seeking refugees, Ukrainians in particular, have settled in Minnesota since 2022. Turns out the largest wave arrived with Maidan, then evaporated.

At the end of this 2024 feature story, I learned that 28 Ukrainians have arrived in Minnesota since Oct 2023.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, there has been an increase in the number of people from Ukraine granted humanitarian protection in ~~the United States~~ The Netherlands.

Luda Anastazievsky, chair of the Ukrainian American Advocacy Committee of Minnesota who has lived in the state for more than 30 years, said this in a comment to Ukrinform.
Anastazievsky met Walz for the first time after the start of the full-scale war, when she and a group of other Ukrainian activists organized a large rally in the state capital of St. Paul in support of Ukraine. It was attended by the governor and his wife, Gwen Walz.

A top aide to Vice President Harris said Thursday that the Democratic presidential nominee does not support an arms embargo on Israel, after the Uncommitted National Movement suggested she was open to discussing a total ban on weapons deliveries from the U.S. Phil Gordon, Harris's national security adviser, reiterated her opposition to an arms embargo in a Thursday post on the social platform X. "@VP has been clear: she will always ensure Israel is able to defend itself against Iran and Iran-backed terrorist groups. She does not support an arms embargo on Israel. She will continue to work to protect civilians in Gaza and to uphold international humanitarian law," he wrote.
