Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Everything you've always wanted to know about the environment ...

... but were always afraid to ask.

For those who don't already know him, Jean-Marc Jancovici is an interesting person (Bio ). He was enrolled by the former French government to give his views on Greenhouse gases (causes, solutions etc). His views involve a lot of numbers. He basically indulges in very detailed analysis of particular environmental issues.

You may agree or disagree with him, but whatever you do at least you'll have to agree that the questions he asks are worth answering.

Here is the link to some of his computations. (in French here)

Here is another link (in French here), this time answering all sorts of questions on Global Warming.

You'll find some typical questions he answers below the fold. They are often based on French models and data, but generally apply universally.

Could we live as today with just renewable energy?

Will we be able to keep our jobs when the price of the barrel surges?

What would an "energetically vertuous" world look like?

How much fossil fuels may we use if we want to stop perturbing the climate?

Should we encourage the growth of air trafic?

Could we all eat organic?

etc etc

I will check them agains my calculations!! he he he hehe

Thank you very much indeed

A pleasure

Thanks for bringing this resource to our attention!

A society committed to the notion that government is always bad will have bad government. And it doesn't have to be that way. — Paul Krugman

Formidable!

Many thanks for this reference.

An interesting book regarding long-term planning that is along the same lines:

My only complaint is that Jancovici's website is really cheap on the graphical/ergonomy side. You can tell that this guy is good at writing reports/publications, but really lousy when it comes to building a website.

One thing I like is his sense of humour, which sometimes accompanies very serious statements. An example: on his "if you're mad enough to pay me to do work for you" (or some name like that) page, he tells us, next to a description of two books he wrote in French, that he'll accept half as much money as Hillary Clinton got for writing her memoirs, to write these same two books in English.

I love this guy -- an eco-geek after my own heart.  He could do with an English translator :-) but the sense of the material comes through, and what a resource!
