Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Taking some time off ET

by Agnes a Paris Wed Mar 22nd, 2006 at 11:26:10 AM EST

Update [2006-4-6 11:53:52 by AgnesaParis]: This was just to let you know that I am taking some time off ET, starting tonight.
One specific event today made me realise how demanding timewise (and also emotionnally involving) it is to remain up to the standards of posting being set here.
I am at risk of losing some of my friends because I prefer to post here rather than spend a ten minute's call time with them during the day.
I appreciate I should have that under control, but it is not the case and I got a warning signal today which made me think that a few weeks-break was necessary.

Bonne route everybody.

Agnes

I have no intention to start another spat, but you have hinted that this is because of something I said.

Not at all, do not worry ! Should I have been offended, I would have dropped you an e-mail to clarify that.
It is as I said : the cost of blogging at the expense of other important things (or people) became clear to me and I just cannot cope with everything at the moment.
Plus you know what it's like : let's take a bet on the time I will resist coming back ...:)

Phew, ok, I give you 2 weeks ;-)

What are the stakes? I suggest a Croissant aux Amandes from the Paul bakery here in London.

I'm sure you say that because you know you are going to win ;-)
I am more into flapjacks and muffins when in London.

Hold out for two weeks and you'll get some flapjacks and muffins.

That will be a very good incentive!
On the other hand, the timing is sort of bad as I moved into my new flat only very recently and I have no connection to the outside world but ET when I'm home (no TV or radio set). So it will be tough.

I did say that I was confused by your comment, but experience shows that misunderstanding could be overcome without resorting to such exterme solutions.

Don't forget us!  We'll miss you.

Ok Agnès, after a quick deliberation, the jury has decided to grant you a 1 day leave of absence ;))

ps: I find that the best time to be on ET is late evening, when it's too late to go out, or when you've already gone out.

I have not heard anything from front pagers yet ; I would think they have a say.
One day is too short to forget the three Ds.
By the way, did you read the book "How to loose friends and alienate people ?" by Toby Young. It is hilarious.

We all take breaks of one sort or another. I've been known to mostly disappear for a week to catch-up on work or just recharge blogging batteries or just get a sense of perspective or rest my arms. I don't normally announce breaks outside of the front-pagers - and when I do I generally find myself overcome with a burst of energy as the terrible weight of having to write something lifts and I can write without obligation...

What was being said about institutions earlier?

by Colman (colman at eurotrib.com) on Wed Mar 22nd, 2006 at 02:28:34 PM EST

Nothing important.
And the reason why I am announcing it is just because today it is not about a trivial break. People who know I am taking a break also know why, and that matters.

The weight of having to write something is not actually a problem I experience, I write because I like it.
ET is the only space for me where there are no stakes and no challenges, not in a traditional way at least, which is quite refreshing actually.

I hope it isn't for too long.  Chris Kulczycki seems to be taking a break as well, leaving me as the only Pole here;) But yes, interactive blog communities are time consuming and addictive (and fun). But you might need them as an outlet for political debate if your friends aren't into it.

Enjoy your newfound free time ;)

I don't think I've found a blog before where over-indulgence is so easy. I can relate. Enjoy every minute of your breather Agnes and be glad you took your decision with spring on the doorstep. It's a good moment to catch some extra sunlight. But you'll be missed, for sure.

I find ET needs to be handled with the extreme care of everything nice. It fits the daily mantra Fran and me agree on: Balance, balance, balance.

I still don't know how Jerome (or Migeru, or DoDo, or Colman or afew, and so on, and so on) keep it up, and as long as they keep their secret I just do it my way. Just lurking in the shadows is also conformable for a while, I find.

All the best, and I send you an e-mail when I spot the first daffodil in bloom. (It's a good sport!)
