Villepin outlines his political ambition for France

by Agnes a Paris Sun Apr 9th, 2006 at 04:04:05 PM EST

We already knew that the French PM has no politics.

The way he expresses his political project for France is creepy enough not to suffer remaining unmentioned.
La  France a l'air à la ramasse, mais observez-la de près elle a les jambes écartées.
Elle attend désespérement qu'on la baise, cela fait trop longtemps que personne ne l'avait honorée.

Rusty translation : France seems to be lagging behind but watch closer, her legs are wide open. She yearns to be screwed, too long has such an honour not been bestowed on her.

Comments welcome. A political leader who gets away with that says a lot about the political class decay.

Where and when did he say this?

Will have to double-check, but it certainly was not in a private circle. Patrick Balkany, who certainly cannot be accused of left-leaning, commented as follows : "We expect him to show he has something in the head, not in his pants."

Agnes! Agnes! Sourcing!

Sourcing is everything. We need the source.

And if Villepin said that, he's fucked, deeply, deeply fucked...

You're more than right. But sourcing takes time.

and if you care to drop me a mail ( so that I can have your address), I can explain why the time I am allowed to spend round here and more broadly on the web has been drastically reduced lately.

Agnes, thanks for the source. But when I put a lot of exclamation marks, it's either really important (such as here (1 x ! for about 110 words) or not serious at all (3 x ! in 20 words) :)

Um...I thought de Villepin was supposed to be the somewhat snobbish refined elite intellectual aristocrat type.  That sounds like Silvio Berlusconi after a few too many glasses of champagne.  Makes you wonder how they teach economics over at ENA.

That's exactly  why I posted this quote. The real Villepin is all there. My experience from political leaders is that the posher their public image, the more inclined they are to gross talking in semi- private.

Also, let's not idealise intellectual aristocrat types :-)

What a colorful guy.  But, hey, at least he's speaking his mind.  I'd still put that ahead of any Bush speech.  Bush, for the record, apparently enjoys saying the word "fuck" in front of young White House interns.  (See, that's the difference between Bush and Clinton: Clinton "walked the walk," as the saying goes. ;-)

Such classy leaders we have these days.  Anybody figure out how to resurrect Churchill and Roosevelt yet?

You think Churchill was classy and never said 'Fuck'?

Yeesh.

Well, aside from criticising the sexist, lewdness of the comment (which is kinda funny as I usually hear him criticized for being too aristocratic ...), does anyone want to interpret the comment and tell us why his observation is wrong?

Not being French, or rather, not living in France, I don't know much about the guy.  I hear the new jobs laws has screwed his chances of being elected President.  But you know, the way he handled George W. Bush in the run up to the war, I've often wanted to give the man a medal.  I have a special place in my heart for him.  Perhaps if our current Administration hadn't lowered the standards so much, I could find the motivation to be more cross with Villepin.

Totally seconded poemless. When at the Foreign Affairs, Villepin showed he had guts. Interestingly, in the French translation of this expression reference is made to a place below the belt.

The Peter Principle: in passing from Foreign Affairs to PM, he patently reached his incompetence level.

Yeah, me too, I watched his speech at the UN live, was awed, and wondered ever since how he could be a nasty right-winger :-)
