Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

A new symbol of America

by Sirocco Tue Jul 25th, 2006 at 10:01:32 AM EST

The United States of America has no problem with Israel burning the skin off children's bodies with incendiary weapons, reducing cities to rubble, targeting UN positions and Red Cross ambulances, forcing 900,000 civilians to flee, and generally bombing a sovereign, democratic state a generation back in time. On the contrary, it provides munitions, diplomatic support, and moral encouragement for these war crimes, financed in no small part with US tax money, to go on. This is not without implications.

Crossposted from Booman Tribune.

The landmark seen below is the traditional, universally recognized symbol of the United States of America and the values on which it builds:

The Statue of Liberty, New York

As such it is, however, obsolete. In all seriousness, I hereby propose a replacement structure, seen below:

The US Navy base Coronado, California

The advantage is that this structure already exists, so that there is no need to divert funds away from burning the skin off children, targeting ambulances, destroying cities, and the other purposes which it so poignantly serves to represent.

They weren't thinking about privileged white kids using google earth to find amusing photos of building to make poor political points, that's for sure.

you are the media you consume.

I'm proud to announce that this has been tagged a 'troll diary' at Daily Kos.

Absolutely, definetely not. Two weeks ago it might have bothered me, however.

Between the little spat about windmills in fjords and your whaling diary, you must be building quite a reputation over there.

I am a little bothered, though, by the thought of site administrators doling out "troll diary" technorati tags.

Hey, you have a pretty decent memory! I had almost forgotten about the windmills.

It's some TU that has added the tag, most likely the rudgrl person.

I suggest you edit your (dKos) diary [unless troll-rating makes it disappear] by adding a link to the appropiate stories (which could be Billmon for the most part) for each point. And something about the ten apartment blocks for each Katyusha.

Maybe I should, but I figure those who care about things like that know about them already. There was a top reco diary yesterday about the white phosphorous and the targeting of the ambulances.

BTW, where have you found that image of the Navy Base?

In the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet, back in June. There is an even more striking photo there, with bomber-like buildings facing the swastika.

Thanks.

I wonder. The designer of the building must surely have noticed what shape he has designed. I can't let up the thought that the similarity wasn't unintended...

Me neither. Ostensibly, the shape was designed for air condition purposes and the similarity discovered too late to be changed.

Addendum: construction began in 1943, so it's not like they didn't know the modern symbolism of the swastika.

Heh. The Israeli ambassador has just lodged a complaint to the Norwegian Press Ethical Council about a caricature by the excellent Finn Graff, portraying Olmert as Amon Götz at his balcony. Wonder how that would fare at Daily Kos.

Part II, you mean? The Muhammed doodles were also filed against. Full acquittal, as there will also be in this case.

I fondly remember when this cartoonist, Finn Graff, drew an elephant bull taking an elephant cow from behind. The latter had the Stars and Stripes pulled over her eyes; the former's member was a crucifix. This prompted a FURIOUS letter to the editor from Republicans Abroad.

And thanks to the obnoxious individual, also a regular here, whose idea of fun is to hand out 4s to any and every comment harshly critical of me, on this and other sites. Considering your personality, it boosts my confidence when you cheer my detractors. :-)
