Like giving a drunkard a bottle of vodka and the car keys

Amy Goodman asks Daniel Levy, former Israeli peace negociator, why Israel has been rejecting a peaceful solution for so long. He blames fundies, "security hawks", but above all, the US:

But there's a third reason, which is that Israel, rather than turning to its friend America and that friend saying, "Hey, guys, this is in your interest, it's in our interest, let's do this," America is normally saying, "If you want to carry on your crazy self-destructive policy of occupation, don't expect us to change it for you. In fact, we'll continue to back you." It's like a drunkard turning to his friend and the friend giving him another bottle of vodka and then giving him the car keys.

US foreign policy isn't in anyone's interest, as far as I can tell. Not the US, not Israel, not even most of the corporations.

This is really one of the most interesting aspects of te US.

while the economic and social policies (innernal) are clear and can be understood... foreign policy.. is just... well national policy....FP  is in the hands of very particular agendas and people, do not benefit anyone, not even the CEO or corporations, and lives in a kind of dark world...at least for now.

A pleasure

I therefore claim to show, not how men think in myths, but how myths operate in men's minds without their being aware of the fact. Levi-Strauss, Claude

I disagree. Leaving aside the war profiteering for the moment, it is clear that the terrorist panic the the Cheney regime has whipped up was an integral part of the 're'-election of Bush/Cheney. As such it empowers the domestic agenda which has very clear advantages to their corporate overlords.

Only in the very short-term, as far as I can tell.

heh - has there ever been a large contingent within the Israeli government that actually wants peace? Among the public, it looks like it's been there off and on over the years (continual violence is not in Jow Q. Public's interest, especially in his own backyard), but in terms of the government, I haven't seen it.

you are the media you consume.
