Ukrainian Party of Regions to protect citizens in the face of political purges
The Ukrainian Party of Regions will again be trying to protect and defend citizens in the face of political purges which began with the formation of the orange coalition government. The Party of Regions, led by ex-prime minister Viktor Yanukovich, said Thursday that highly qualified men and women who were doing their best for Ukraine were the first to be found redundant. The Party of Regions finds political persecution inadmissible. More than 18,000 employees of the executive branch of power were fired by orange President Yushchenko and orange prime minister Timoshenko about two years ago.

Is this the beginning of a process to separate East Ukraine from West Ukraine?

US condemns Russia over Georgian separatists (none / 1)

US Senate slams Russia's policy
A draft resolution about condemning the Russian Federation's 'provocative and dangerous' policy against Georgia has been brought to US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

The draft resolution has been proposed by Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Joseph R. Biden.

It is stated in the draft resolution that 'declaring that the Russian Federation have to recognize diplomatically Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent states, with this step the certain officials of the government of the Russian Federation threaten the region's peace and safety and in whole republic of Georgia'.

According to the draft resolution, US senate condemns recent statement of officials of the government of the Russian Federation that the Russian Federation has to recognize independence of breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia such steps will be assessed as an infringement of the sovereignty of Georgia and all obligations in the frames of the international peacekeeping efforts.

'The senate calls the government of the Russian Federation to disavow these statements', it is stressed in the draft resolution.

Is there any more information anywhere ? I appreciate that 18,000 people being made redundant two years ago is a huge number, but is there any real suggestion that there was a partisan nature to who was removed ?

Also are there any suggestions that the new government will repeat such a process ?

That's a good point Helen and I don't know the answer. The question is whether this is Yanukovich hype or reality. But the fact remains that secessionist aspirations are palpable.

There was a secessionist streak in Western Ukraine, which is only a small part of the country; the rest has not such plans, but most are keen to remain an independent country.

This sounds like stupid scaremongering from Yanukovitch.

the objectives seem clear (4.00 / 2)

From my understanding of the situation, it's actually the Russian speaking Eastern regions and Crimea that are keen on separating from the Western, agrarian regions which are more influenced by Polish culture.

Two drivers are behind this:
> financial - the East isn't keen on redistributing its wealth with the West
> military - Russian speakers (and Russia proper) are worried that the Western leaning Tymoshenko is intent on shutting the Black Sea Fleet in Crimea and integrating into NATO

Stupid or not, Yanukovich's posturing offers insight into the separatist political objectives of the Party of Regions, in particular now that Tymoshenko was voted in as PM by the Vrhovna Rada (by a 1 vote margin).
