Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Chew and Screw

"Normal" Americans get to celebrate tomorrow by having a feast with their family members.  I did recently "make up" with my sociopath mother but along with that comes a resolution to reject not only her but the sociopathic society that comes with her.  So the plan is to let her come, eat and then dispense with her as fast as we possibly can.  All the while being evasive about projects Exodus and Wolverine.

Yes, it is only another day in the life of a suburban baby boomer "nobody" American prole.  It does seem that the angst of caring for elder parents of baby boomers is becoming a rather large issue for dysfunctional families and their members.  What struck me hardest was the sudden breakdown of Ma and the realization that it is a hopeless situation.  Most places on the net just advocate walking away from a sociopath.

But then I realize our entire society is run by sociopaths.  Then what.

And what will dinner conversations consist of.
Hey, Ma, what part of under investigation for elder abuse do you not understand?"  Or, OK Dad is of no "use" to you in providing you with entertainment, mental stimulation, dancing and dining out so you plan to wharehouse him in a "care" institution and then place yourself in a elder assisted living community.  Well, ya know these things do happen and soliciting seven parasitic lawyers who have zero standing in the practice of elder law kind of leaves the door open for the gold diggers don't it.

There is this growing paradox in this the "land of the "free"" and home of the "brave".  It started with 911 and even before that with Charolette Iserbyt.

Former senior policy advisor in the US department of education.   As I look back upon several years of internet research, I mean everything from Hopi Indian prophecies to Nostradamus predictions I realize I am not alone and in fact am in the company of great and wonderously famous/infamous names in accordance with my worldview.  I am just an American peon engineer so how in God's creation did I ever come to the conclusions I have come to.  Jesus H. Christ, I can't listen to or stomach more than 30 seconds of mainstream bullshit assholian American TeeVee without wanting to reach for some Blessed Holy Water or something.

My mother is 80 years old.  She, having the benefit of living more of her lifetime not eating processed foods and or living in our modern toxic enviornment has sent me on a paranormal quest for sanity in an insane world for about an entire month now.  That is the strength of a more correct lifestyle.  What is that Japanese community touting 140 year olds?  Nah, that was a link on at least three fried computers ago.

So how did I get to the place I am today.

The name Lasthorseman used to be sort of a unique thing and when I did a Google search it did in fact return many of the places I used to comment on in political blogs and such.  Yes, in the "left" vs "right" scheme of things many of the subjects I brought up where "unconventional".  Now though I see that the mighty search engine itself Google, that vast bastion of corporate oneness that is corporate establishment oneness has in fact taken upon itself the responsibility to inject other Lasthorseman links thus cancelling out what used to be mostly blog posts.  Yes, this could be just the march of technology but if it is not then I feel honored to be considered a pain in their ass.

Sound sort of like I hate my mother don't it.
No,like the 200 year historical end of an empire I just consider it a sad, very sad loss.

Try that ancient search engine altavista.com for the name Lasthorseman.  Yeah I most undoubtedly made some emotional comments in the heat of the political moment but then again who has not.

The solution to the problem of elders is to incorporate them into a family with several generations living together. The problem then is to avoid going crazy.

To be honest I think we (who live western kind of life ) are already crazy.
Alienation (isolation) in ALL segments of society  is so "big and wide" that it is actually scary. Don't get me start to explain what I mean, I wouldn't know where to start...really the topic is so huge...

I've been trying to explain it for several years.  As my Russian boss said "Now I have lived in two socialist countries".

Not just alienation but emotional sterility as well. In other words, we're zombies.

To be honest, the above is half the reason I'm on this trip. Travelers actually like to talk.

you are the media you consume.

The solution to the problem of elders is to incorporate them into a family with several generations living together.

Not if said elder is abusive in any way or if there has been major dysfunction between relatives. I understand making multigenerational living more socially acceptable for those who want to do it, but let's keep assisted living/nursing homes in the realm of the socially acceptable as well.

Europe is supposed to be somewhat Progressive.  Where do I go for a final dose of euthanasia when I want it?  Nothing fancy.  Just a couple pills, lie down, and I'm out of here.

They tried to assimilate me. They failed.

Twank, don't take this the wrong way!  I have long felt that much of the establishment would like to condemn us to linger as long as possible and to consume as many medical dis-services as possible before dying.  An unholy alliance of fundamentalism corporate interests and a government that caters to both.  We see what has happened to Jack Kevorkian and we saw what the Bush administration did to stymie Oregon's Right to Die law.

I have freaked out many friends by saying that the final act of social defiance is to end one's life on one's own terms, but that is what I believe.  To relatives and others who say that this is for God to decide I have said: "God either doesn't care or is a sadistic bastard." I love life and want to live as long as I can in conditions that are satisfactory to myself, but no longer.  Then I want to be able to drink my cyanide Cool-Aid.  By trying to oppose such self determined actions all these folks are doing is putting pressure on people to end their lives while they still have the power to do so on their own, and earlier than they otherwise would have to do so.

There used to be a Hemlock Society.  Somewhere I have an envelope full of practical information from them.  They appear to have a successor organization.successor organization. I haven't checked them out.  I hope that I have another 20-30 years before I will need them.  I hope by that time that such issues will be dealt with more rationally.

Swear to God, sometimes I think I should start up my own religion.  For me, being stuck in the gravity well of this rock (Earth) revolving around one power source (the sun) and helpless to watch as the dominant species destroys the biosphere for themselves and for so many other life forms is either a prison or Hell.  I actually look forward to shedding this flesh-bag I tool around in, just for a CHANCE of finding out what is REALLY going on.

I have my suspicions.

They tried to assimilate me. They failed.

Chronic pain saps the will to live.  From what you have posted, I suspect you are all too familiar with this ugly fact.  Meanwhile, take such pleasures as you may.

Yup, but it wouldn't be so bad if the dominant species wasn't so ....

Yes, that adds the bitter to so many of our thoroughly alloyed pleasures.

I agree. The ridiculous thing is that in this culture, due to the miserable influence of Christianity, one has to DEFEND the idea. Of course in the classical world it could be a perfectly reasonable and honourable thing to do, though they drew the line at what you might call sentimental suicide:

But the Romans fully approved of what might be termed "patriotic suicide"; death, in other words, as an alternative to dishonour... They disapproved of Mark Antony not because he killed himself, but that he killed himself for love.

They do not have to be abusive...it's hard to be old and even harder for those around old people.
Today 50% of marriages end up being divorced so today's family is dysfunctional anyway. They can't stand to live with each other even for the sake of kids, how anyone can expect they'll live with old sick and by life ruined and nervous parents???

Not against having the "choice" between an institution vs in home family care, it is the mechanics of it.

Institution in this case means the entire medical establishment geared toward the illusion of privacy in medical records when the reality is far from it.
Download it in both formats while you still can.

In 1979 a company I worked for in Hollywood had a secretary who was a member of a band named Atascadero.  The California State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, as it was then known, was located in Atascadero.  So naturally, the band had to give a benefit performance for the inmates of the hospital.  As our secretary recounted, the front man and lead singer for the band opened the show by saying: "The California State Hospital for the Criminally Insane.  Hell!  The United States of America is owned and operated by the Criminally Insane!"  With that, the audience went crazy, and they opened their show.  I don't know how far Atascadero got beyond the confines of the hospital, but it was a great story and I agree with the band leader.
