Nominations for Euro Warship Names

In the diary about the Polish shipyards, I came up with the spur of the moment suggestion of building a European Navy to keep the continents shipyards busy, to construct a military industrial complex to rival that of the US and to generate campaign contributions and "commissions" for Euro politicians.

I suggested EUS Jan Sobieski for the Polish contribution to the aircraft carrier mountain. Presumably this name would appeal to the Poles and Lithuanians he ruled over as well as the Austrians he saved from the Turks.

Perhaps for England we could go for something like the EUS Alfred the Great.

Does anyone else want to suggest national heroes to name a Jan Sobieski class aircraft carrier after?

Perhaps the names of Admirals and Generals, who were not monarchs, could be reserved for the cruisers.

I like the naming from Iain M Banks's Culture novels.

So how about "Subjugate the Darkies" or "It's all about the oil" or "Meet interesting people and kill them" or "I joined for the water-skiing"?

Be careful, this idea may take hold among reactionaries and the next thing you know is that we'll have the BISMARK!!!

For better or for worse Bismarck was a distinguished, if very conservative, European statesman. He only arranged for wars with Denmark, Austria and France, as well as delaying the development of democracy in Prussia and Germany. Who could possibly object to him?

We could do worse, how about the EUS Vlad the Impaler? Another person who might upset the Turks. Oh dear, back to the drawing board.

Obviously we can't afford to offend the Turks. The same reason of political correctness means that a joint French-British carrier can hardly be called the Horatio Nelson.

In the proud tradition of EU names, I boldly predict that we will get the 'Magellan'.

Using the names of historic rulers and military commanders is likely to offend someone, as most of them are famous for fighting their European neighbours.

The alternative is using the names of EU founding fathers like Robert Schuman or Jean Monnet. Presumably that would only offend the Eurosceptics.

What about Fermat-Wiles? Genuinely European time and spatial scale (1637, Toulouse–1996, Princeton, [désolé]), This opens a quite a lot of exciting possibilities:

Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch (the German super-carrier)

Gauß-Bonnet for the old axis.

Cauchy-Bunyakovsky-Schwarz for the new greater Axis
(it allows in addition for many combinations, and if you misspell Schwarz . . .)

Quadratic-Reciprocity for a submarine.
