There's a direct metro (none / 1)

actually, a RER - the C line. It's 4 stops from Porte Maillot to "Kennedy-Radio-France" and then it's just two blocs along the river, downstream.

Note that the Porte Maillot station is undegoing renovation, so some accesses are closed. Working in La Défense, I take the metro to Porte Maillot and then use the velib down to home but that may not be the easiest choice with luggage...

parking your car (none / 1)

It's actually rather rasy to park your car in that neighborhood, There are only a few periods around the day where it's more difficult to find a spot (8-11pm for instance), but it's a lot easier over the week-end.

If you have a foreign licence plate, it'll be free as long as you park on a legal space (you need to avoid the yellow 'livraisons" spots).

although I seem to remember there are ticket machines in that street. Can I get away with not paying and not get clamped or worse ?

And my lack of french doesn't help in trying to work out what's good or bad - yes, that's my fault but still a worry.

your car may be towed away if on a 'livraisons' spor (or a pedestrian crossing, or a handicaped slot, not that this prevents people from still doing it regularly). If you don't pay on a normal slot, you'll get a €11 ticket that cannot and will not be enforced. If you pay, you can only stay for 2 hours anyway.

If anyone would like to do a tour on Friday evening of a particular section of Paris with an inexpensive dinner afterward I would be happy to arrange it. (Last year about fifteen of us toured Montmartre and thirty of us dined after.)
I can think of some areas which are good for walking: Mouftard; Place Clichy and Batignoles; Belleville filled with Asiatic restaurants; Montparnarse, etc., etc.

I've lived in Paris for 18 years and I've never been to the Pere Lachaise cemetary. You can read about it here.

I'm thinking of a few hours tour of the Pere Lachaise Cemetary and then going over to Belleville and having a dinner in what is the second largest Chinatown in Paris.

Père Lachaise is definitely worth a visit, and it's probably not been visited by all of those that have already been to Paris. I highly recommend it.

I'm not sure I'll join anything on Friday yet, because I'm already supposed to be in two diffrerent places for work that day (sigh... given all the other things I'm also supposed to do that day, I'm not sure how I'll manage)

Don't feel bad: I've lived in Paris 32 years, now live rue des Pyrénées, which is one of the sides of the cemetery, some 400m south of it, and I wasn't even planning to ever go ;-)
18 years seems like a spring to me!

Anyway, if you're in the area, may I suggest eating at Les Allobroges (slightly cheaper than Firenze, and top quality -possibly the best quality to price ratio in Paris, and certainly in the Eastern part of the town)? After an apéritif at my place of course (unless Geezer is with us -my lift is too small alas).

I think any such communal activity is a good one.

Last year I think there was a little resistance and your fine tour was a little lost as we'd all arrived in town and wanted to sit and chat and get to know each other a little. So could I suggest that we have a bit of a rendezvous and get together in a nice bar/coffee place with an arrival window of an hour or so. When we can get acquainted and caught up with each other's news before we lurch off sight-seeing.

I think that would depend a little on the time we meet. If we meet around 17:00 as i think we did last time - it might get to late for the tour afterwards if we chat first away in a bar. But maybe we could choose a bar as a meeting place until all arrive and then go for the tour, or/and meet earlier.

Yes. I think most who would be interested are arriving Thursday or early Friday. If we all agree on Pere Lachaise, for example, I could create an itinerary where we meet about 3 p.m. and talk for an hour, then tour the cemetary until 6 p.m (I'll have to check on the hours it's open) and then go to Belleville (Edith Piaf was born there- it's very "populaire"). Anyone who could not make the tour could meet us at the restaurant about 7p.m.

Pub crawl/cat-herding. (none / 1)

This was a bit of a washout last year with people insisting on getting lost between pubs or being distracted by shiny things. Herding cats would have been a breeze in comparison.

I shall do some research and see what I can find, but at most it'll be 3 pubs cos it gets too difficult otherwise.

I'm going to be out of town, during the Sept meetup, unfortunately, but if ever you wind up in the area of the Musée d'Orsay, you might consider seeing a bit of the museum and having lunch, there.

Pity, the museum seems to be between special exhibits, the weekend of Sept 19-21, but there's always the permanent collection, which is varied and interesting.

The restaurant, situated in the waiting room of the former train station, is sumptuously decorated in 1900s, 18th century 'revival' style, but what's most attractive about the hall are the immensely tall windows, which let in a flood of [to me] irresistibly beautiful light. When friends and acquaintances come to town, I often try to find an excuse to take them there :-)

The food is quite good and is reasonable in price (menu, 16.50€, plus museum entry, I think). For more info and pictures, see here.

Can you move me from the Will attend to the May attend column. Moving house has got really uncertain as to timetable. If the pperwork for the new house isnt completed on Monday morning, then the furniture is most likely moving on the weekend of the 19th. ;-(

It's 20 euros and 30mn in the afternoon, vs 10 euros and 1h20 by train. Ask for "Maison de la Radio", Passy-Home is just one street away from it.

I beg to differ. First, it's never taken that long to me by train -so that may be a maximum rather than median time.
Second, anytime there is a public transport option available, we know where energy efficiency is pointing ;-)

Thanks, Jerome. I know once I get on the plane I'll say 'to hell with it/I only live once' and start splurging, telling myself I´ll have all kinds of work waiting for me when I get back...

I will be arriving in Paris about 10pm on the Friday, and leaving on the Sunday afternoon.

I suspect my best plan is to stay in touch by phone from the Eurostar and join up with what is going on when I arrive.

Leaving on Sunday afternoon on an early enough eurostar to not risk missing the last connection from london to Cardiff, like last time...
