Izzy à Paris

by Izzy Wed Sep 17th, 2008 at 07:17:18 PM EST

I am writing this because I am so excited and happy to be in Paris that I just had to share it with you, my friends, collegues, and allies.  And also because I am staying at the à Paris household and Jerome will not let me into my room to sleep until I have posted a diary.

I will also acknowledge that my somewhat formal writing tone is not only to be attributed to my being under duress... er, I mean overhwhelmed with enthusiasm, but also to the fact that I am having the pleasure of learning the French keyboard and I cannot locate the apostraphe.  I am also avoiding the letters M and W, not entirely successfully.

But let us proceed.

For much of the duration of my 11 hour flight, I was convinced by the computer graphic displayed in front of me that I had somehow gotten on a flight to Algiers, but finally the graphic-design gods took mercy on me and alleviated my fears - I truly was arriving in Paris.

Upon landing, I was shocked that I had never been informed that Paris is evidently a sleepy farming community.

I wandered through the airport, collecting my baggage and getting in a taxi, all without having my passport stamped.  I assure you that I am here and that it turns out that Paris is an actual city, bso I wandered out to take this photo just in case I needed evidence at some point in the future.

So here I am.  In Paris.  Blogging not sleeping.  Now I shall retire and, with any luck, not lie awake worrying that my blank passport will land me in for questioning on the way back.  Instead, I hope for sweet dreams of shoe shopping tomorrow.  I will keep you posted.

oh, and I forgot to add that besides one small incidence of projectile vomiting, the entire à Paris household could not be more lovely.  The Puke à Paris diary will have to wait for another day.  Or perhaps for the release of the tell-all book...

normally excellent guesses, but neither one.  although i have my suspicions, it remains to be seen if jerome is a sadist.  it was the tyrrany of technology - my son called on the cell phone; thoughtless child that he is.

Well, this is a tragedy. I am not only going to miss meeting the star of some blockquoted movie, but also a furore of footwear.

Byzantine travel arrangements, burning tunnels and clients running amok in my office shouting "Yesterday! Yesterday!" have conspired to prevent my participation.

I'm so sorry you couldn't make it, Sven.  I'll photograph the shoe shopping, I swear.  I looked at some today, but my camera had run out of memory in the Louvre.

I'm so envious of you being in Paris, let alone chez Paris.

One of the most surprising things for me was getting off the plane, following the signs that said Non-EU passengers, and suddenly being outside.  I almost tried to turn around and get back in the building.  That was '02 so it may have changed.

Enjoy yourself, I'm going on vacation to Indiana, heh.

Jerome mentioned that you charmed his kids. Does that mean you speak French or do the scions of Paris speak English?
by MarekNYC on Thu Sep 18th, 2008 at 01:00:47 PM EST
Kids can be charmed even if you don't speak the same language. I managed to win over afew's grandchildren.

Heh.  Once again, two good guesses, but neither.  The children are charmed by having a seemingly grown person in their midst who can only speak two words.  They're trying to teach me things, but we've mostly been making faces, signs, and giggling at my horrid pronunciation.  The youngest in turn has charmed me forever by liking my singing - a first!

Good job Jerome!  Sleep deprivation until she writes something.  You don't fool around do you?

Once she gets back to the states we'll have to put someone in charge of that.

Hope you're having a great time Iz - can't wait for the updates.
