Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Amsterdam meET-up - May 9

by Nomad Thu May 7th, 2009 at 01:38:03 PM EST

Next week, Saturday May 9, there will be a ET meet-up in Amsterdam!

A proposal for an evening meet below the fold.

So far, this is the list of the party [UPDATED by In Wales]:

Nomad
dvx
InWales
nanne
Metatone
RogueTrooper
Jerome (perhaps but unlikely)

Is this the final list, are there more people to join, or do I have someone on the list who sadly can't make it?

There were a few people interested in organising a day programme. I think it's best to do that on the fly, or see if people have special things they'd like to visit.

For the evening on Saturday, I propose to get together for dinner at around 19:30. Can I have special wishes for people (vegetarian, etc.)?

The Netherlands has gone officially smoke-free for restaurants and bars (mostly). I've scouted for a few restaurants in Amsterdam, although I haven't sampled any. Having been away for over 2 years, it will be as much surprise for me as for anyone else! Of course I was sort-of intrigued by this one...

I will be offline for the next couple of days, and in the course of next week I can make appropriate reservations. Around Thursday evening, I will post a final diary and include streetplans and directions to the meet-up place.

Accommodation

I provided some links in the last diary for some places of accommodations that appealed to me, particularly the neighbourhoods.

For the adventurous, I can recommend Couch Surfing, which undoubtedly will add to additional spice of experiencing Amsterdam and its citizens.

After browsing a bit I get good vibes from the following:

You people will hold another meetup and (you are warned) I'll show up.

Wish I could make it. Do have a blast! :)

For people who are going to the meet up - when are you arriving and leaving and which bit of Amsterdam are you staying in?

I arrive on Friday evening and leave on Monday afternoon.
Not booked accommodation yet.

I've never been to Amsterdam so I am up for exploring over the weekend either on my own or with others, but I'll leave it to people who know the place to recommend things to see and do.

In Wales, see this diary Nomad wrote when I asked him about Amsterdam before my second visit to the city. It was really useful. I love Amsterdam!

I would like to come to the meEt-up, but I'm just back from a one week break and if I go to Amsterdam, I will miss some deadlines, which I cannot afford right now.

Just booked my accommodation after much searching.  Staying in the South, incidentally just around the corner from the Heineken experience.

We also stayed in the South, by one of the entrances to Vondelpark. It's a very quiet and beautiful area.
Here you have some of the photos I took in Amsterdam with a Coolpix.

I was glad I found a decent price in the South since I want to wander around Vondelpark. Those pictures are lovely!

For those a bit interested, there is an exhibition of naked Madona photos (of 20 years old) in the Artis.

Sadly, it looks like I'm not gonna be able to make it. Have fun.

Any luck yet Fran or is it definitely no?

Looks like it. Amazing the prices are almost twice as much than two weeks ago and the one I found returning early would be almost  €800.- Thats a little dear for city hopping.:-(

Would have loved to hang out with you in Amsterdam!

I'm glad I booked my flights when I did but cheap accommodation that wasn't the last bed in a 6 dorm room of a hostel, was hard to find.

I would like to meet up with fellow bloggers, I'm not certain yet of my weekend schedule. Please keep me posted on your plans and places to meet.

I'm now unlikely to be able to make it. Negotiations I'll be participating to over the next two weeks will take place in Paris, not Amsterdam, and are likely to spill over into that week-end.

So count me out, barring some unexpected events this coming week.

I have two questions:

Does anyone have a reliable weather forecast for the weekend?

and

When and where are we going to meet up, will there be a wander around the town before we meet for food?

by In Wales (inwales aaat eurotrib.com) on Thu May 7th, 2009 at 01:39:33 PM EST
I'll be arriving around 11:30 on Sat. So some way to meet up would suit me.

Also, do we have a venue for the evening?
