Photo Blog # 160

by LEP Sat Oct 9th, 2010 at 06:23:58 AM EST

Greetings and welcome to ET Photo blog # 160. Since the seasons are changing now, why not do "The Four Seasons"?

I took this photo this morning thinking of the ET photo blog.

frontpaged by In Wales

We'll also have "Photos as Usual" and "Ask the Experts."

Happy posting!

P.S. I'll add some more photos tomorrow when I get home from Paris; my Paris computer is missing photos.

These two photos were shot on "Shutter" position at 1/20th of a second to get an impressionistic effect. Am I bullshitting? Yes; the camera was on shutter position and I didn't realize it.

Well at the very least you'll get an impression.

Any idiot can face a crisis - it's day to day living that wears you out.

Yes, excellent, glad to see I'm not the only one using this "special" technique!

I know you can't really tell but the leaves are turning, it looks gorgeous.  The B&W version feels quite strong.  It is the miners memorial in one of the valley towns in Blaenau Gwent.

It does but it is just a straightforward conversion from colour to B&W. The sun was shining quite strongly on the background and there was some haze, I really like how it came out.

That opening picture is lovely. I like the way you've captured the light shading down from top of tree to bottom.

My favourite coffee spot down by the river - The Roastery under the bridge. Warm enough (sort of) to sit outside. I've been stuck in front of a monitor editing for a few days, so it was time to get out before the snow comes.

Somebody has to do it.

Mind you, I had spent 6 hours solid hours subtitling Finnish material for our Swedish client before that coffee break. It's not creative - just grindingly boring. But deadlines loom...

I'm taking a digital photography class in the hopes of getting less addicted to keeping my camera on auto!  My ancient Canon A95 doesn't go beyond f-8, and we were instructed to try for depth and also to plan ahead so as not to have to do software manipulation. I have hopes of eventually upgrading to a Nikon (any suggestions?) that will use our old Nikon lenses, but first I want to get comfortable with taking the Canon out of auto.

Are you enjoying the classes so far?
by In Wales (inwales aaat eurotrib.com) on Thu Oct 7th, 2010 at 07:58:47 PM EST

Yes! I did lots of film camera and darkroom stuff years ago, but I've had no idea how to apply it to digital with all those settings, menus, and dials.  It's so different to be able to check out the pic right away, and to be able to take hundreds of shots on one battery recharge.  I'm not a manual reader or techy person, so the class is forcing me to learn how to use the settings.  It just seems harder than film, at least for me.

My film SLR was very simple and intuitive.  Digital can seem really bewildering at first because you have so many options.  Good to know you are enjoying yourself though.  It gets a lot easier with time.
