2013 Meetup Location (Interest Check)

by JakeS Mon Jul 8th, 2013 at 05:08:36 AM EST

Since this is about the time of year we would normally start planning a September meetup, and since Helen suggested Hamburg for this year's meetup, I thought I'd put up an interest check.

So far, we have the following suggestions:
Paris (because it's traditional, also lots of Parisian ETers)
Copenhagen (I can probably arrange something interesting to do and a nice place to eat)
Hamburg (model railway)
Other (please specify in comments)

I'll update the poll as suggestions come in (may reset the poll, but I'll keep a note of the votes).

But it screwed around with the votes.

I am pretty sure that new options should be added only at the bottom of the poll...

In addition, when you have 3 alternatives, "A, not A" leads to a complete specification, but with 4 options you now need to add the 6 possibilities where two options are favoured and two are not.

Ugg, I don't know how to vote cos I'll probably go to any of them so can't vote "not".

I think Hamburg will be good cos it's such an interesting city, Hanseatic museum and the very best model railway in the world, but I've never been to Copenhagen so that'd be good too

We could make the poll single transferable vote.

... at least as long as the number of suggestions is small enough that the combinational complexity is manageable.

In an ideal world I'd want Bremen for CH's tour of wind stuff, Hamburg because DoDo could be there, and to be shown around Copenhagen by Jake.

But I had to vote for Paris because, for a number of reasons including financial, it's probably the only one I could make it to.

They all look equally unlikely for me (4h minimum airport to airport with a stop)

Trains are about 10 hours for Bremen or Hamburg.

Oh ah looking a bit harder : Lyon to Hamburg looks perfectly feasible : TGV to Basel then sleeper! Competitive with flying, probably cheaper counting accommodation, and saves faffing around after an evening flight, or the indignity of sleeping on airport benches (not that it's beneath my dignity)
Lyon to Bremen is feasible too, though with two stops.

Copenhagen's out of reach by rail (sleeper, via Hamburg or Cologne, but nearly 24h overall). I'm happy to spend a night on the train, but not to lose a day each way.

Given that it's a meetup, with the focus on chat/discussion, not a city tour, I think it's best to make it as easy as possible for the largest number to attend. Given that there are, as Jake said: "lots of Parisian ETers", that access from UK and many other places is relatively easy, and the preferences of those in France like afew and me - I would suggest we stick to Paris.

Also I discovered a restaurant opposite Len's place (so near metros Guy Moquet and Jules Joffrin) which has a lovely inside courtyard and room (with plenty of space unlike the little back room of the last place) part of which we could reserve for one session, and reasonable prices.

Paris is getting even nicer:

"The Left Banks of the Seine will be closed to traffic from the end of January. From Spring, the 2.3 kilometres of road between the Pont de l'Alma and the Orsay Museum will be transformed into a pedestrian walkway, with floating gardens and a staircase connecting the Orsay Museum to the Seine.

While it would be nice to accommodate Paul's plans, I'm sure he wouldn't expect it to be a determining factor for the rest of us. I suspect many of us would prefer a meeting in Paris before early October. While one can never guarantee good weather there would be more of a chance of it in Aug early Sept.

It would be great to participate, but only if it's convenient for y'all. I'd suggest a mini-meetup for those available, while we're there, if folks are interested. One of my closest friends from Austin is living in the 12th and sampling restaurants so that we can optimize quality vs price.

Have to underline afew's comment - accommodations should be cheaper in October. Probably less crowded, too.

I'm easy :-) it could be nice in October:

"It may be on the wet and brisk side, but for meditative strolls in crisp air, long afternoons chatting or reading in warm cafes, and enjoying dramatic dusks in picturesque settings, Paris is incomparable.

Why to Love It: Tourist season is ebbing, and the city gets a quiet, contemplative feel to it. You'll likely have more space to wander ...

Also, there's this:

From 9 to 13 October 80th edition of the Harvest Festival of Montmartre

has found the perfect sponsor: Thomas Dutronc!

Nolwenn Leroy, Thomas Outronc ... a charming duo to celebrate the Harvest Festival of Montmartre placed this year under the sign of love!

Nolwenn Leroy, singer bold, creative and popular. Thomas Dutronc, meanwhile,. has made himself a name in alongside the best gypsy jazz musicians in the heart of the Flea Market and 18th St. Ouen, with its jazzy-gypsy melodies.

80 years after Mistinguett and Fernandel, these two artists embody the talent, youth and glamor.

Shouldn't we make a decision ?

The majority expressing a preference (unchanged recently) are for Paris (surprise!) and for reasons discussed above (easier booking, cheaper; Paul Spencer's trip; the Montmartre festival), the weekend starting Fri Oct 11th would seem to be preferable.

Sound good to me, or it would if I could afford the trip. At least it's far enough in the future that I can pretend I'll be able to save enough for it. (Currently middle class broke: worrying how will I pay for the horses and can I afford a trip to Paris?!)

It's not as if we're worrying how to feed the children or ourselves and it's largely a consequence of Sam starting up her own practice so it's not even externally imposed, so sorry isn't really necessary: thanks anyway. It's just a pain in the ass for the duration. I could really do with a trip to civilisation though. Sitting in the provinces is only partly offset by the net.

Feeding the children. I had told Elder Daughter I was cutting off her allowance for the summer, I expected her to get a job, any job. She got a good one, then it fell through at the last minute (bastards, she had turned other work down in the meantime) so now she's scrounging for hours of menial work.

So I may have to give her some money, not budgeted, which will be a strain... Oh well, middle class lifestyle choices. She can live for free at my place if she wants.

This requires somebody to volunteer for handling the practicalities.

Had we chosen a Danish or German location, that someone could have been me. But my French is only barely good enough that I can get by when I am able to make up the deficit with points and grunts. And unhappily I lack a modem that accepts that input syntax.

There's little point in suggesting yet more alternatives likely to get just a few supporters like the existing alternatives.

As I said above it's clear that the majority prefer to stick with Paris and Oct 11th weekend makes sense from a practical point of view, availability of rooms, time to book, and it coincides with Montmartre festival. Earlier I also said I'd found a restaurant near Len's pied a terre, which has a lovely interior courtyard and reasonable prices and would be a good RV for the Fri ev.
