ET Meet-up, Paris, 11-12-13 October 2013

by afew Tue Jul 9th, 2013 at 05:43:07 AM EST

From this diary and poll came the choice, (however attractive the other options), of Paris for a meet-up in October, over the weekend 11-12-13.

This should give time for people to book cheaper travel arrangements, and also to look for accommodation.

The apartment we rented last year (WoB, HoB, Helen and I) was a good deal in terms of price, comfort, and conviviality. But, like travel, this calls for early booking, and booking can be complicated.

I suggest we make a start on that by listing candidates for this type of accommodation.

I'm definitely interested in reducing accommodation costs

Min price of 244 euro to collect some Skyteam airmiles on this. Not bad, but I have to move fast, and only fortnight / morning flight are cheap. Will we start doing something on Friday already? Sharing an apartment would be good.

Don't know at the moment, it all depends on what accommodation is on offer. I'd like to come over on Friday through till Monday, but worst comes to the worst I'll arrive saturday, overnight and go home sunday

"A couple" as in "sharing a bed", or "a couple" as in two?

I'm not a couple, but I would be grateful for a sofa to crash on.

Ok no rob, but it's a bed, not a sofa, if that's ok.

I'll be in Thisted next week, you gonna be in Jylland by any chance?

Thanks. A bed is fine. Then I'll not book a hostel.

I probably won't be in Jylland next week, but I won't know for certain until I get back to work Monday (we do have occasional business in Jylland, but whether it'll be next week I can't tell). I could go sometime over the weekend, though, if that's still relevant.

I want to attend but I have to check with my girlfriend who's coming sometime in October to find out WHEN she'll be here and whether she'd want to have a weekend in Paris while here. Sending her a letter now.

Tried looking at train tickets from Alicante on SNCF site, but they're not on sale yet. Anyone know the best way to get a good train price deal?

I'll keep looking into it, but here's what I found immediately, which makes me think it might be cheaper to fly:  http://www.rome2rio.com/s/Alicante/Paris

I'm loving this site at first glance, but I'll have to see how I like it over time. Check it out, though.

It's a search engine that claims to show you how to get from anywhere to anywhere, by car, bus, train, plane, boat.

Trento-Martina Franca it tells you to use a taxi for the last section, even though it's much cheaper to take a train run by Ferrovia Sud-Est.

Super! That's exactly the kind of input they solicit on the site, and you'd be doing them a great favor by sending that info.

Another test: Wien to Hukvaldy. It tells you how to get by train to Pribor, and then tells you to drive (drive what? There's not even a bar at the station, let alone a car rental company). The drive is supposed to take 6 hours, for 466 km (I've walked it in about an hour).

I don't understand... you've walked 466 km in an hour?

Ohhhhh, I see where you're confused:  the "drive" portion of the results are for when you drive rather than taking a train. DRIVING from Wien to Hukvaldy is a 4 hour trip. The train trip involves no driving. There's no reasonable flight method according to the results.

Does that help?

Well, dang, NOW I see where you got that result, and I think it's an obvious error on their part in that final rail posting, which suggests you can't get to Hukvaldy by train, apparently. But the mileage and time are obviously way off even by their own map illustration.

You can't get there by train. But you can presumably get from Pribor to Hukvaldy by taxi by calling the number posted at the station, and requesting a taxi (in Czech, of course).

Doesn't look like I'll get to make it this time around. If I do, it will be a last-minute thing and I'll stay with a friend who has a small apartment in the 16th.

In the meantime, if anyone would like me to do any apartment research for them, I'd be glad to help.
