Wow. I did think that both the golden Spanish team and the ball possession strategy are past their prime, but such a total disintegration... I am speechless.

Good calls on the Netherlands and Costa Rica. So what do you know about Iran that we don't?

Tell us more!

I read the coach made a mistake in the first half, over-defending while not giving Messi enough room to roam (Maxi Rodriguez was in the way), which he corrected with the substitutions at the start of the second half.

Nah. Having watched as much of Nigeria-Iran as I could stand (about 5 minutes), I can assure you that neither of those teams are going through. Argentina, Bosnia it is.

Hi Everybody - late on the scene, but I just had to watch a bit to get a feel for the countries/teams (which I knew nothing about). So finally, here's my picks:

1A Brazil 2A Mexico
1B Netherlands 2B Chile
1C Columbia 2C Cote D'Ivoire
1D Costa Rica 2D Uruguay
1E France 2E Switzerland
1F Argentina 2F Nigeria
1G Germany 2G USA
1H Belgium 2H Algeria

Round of 16

1A Brazil v 2B Chile = Brazil
1C Columbia v 2D Uruguay = Uruguay

1E France v 2F Nigeria = France
1G German v 2H Algeria = Germany

1B Netherlands v 2A Mexico = Netherlands
1D Costa Rica v 2C Cote D'Ivoire = Costa Rica

1F Argentia v 2E Switzerland = Argentina
1H Belgium v 2 G USA = USA

Round of 8

Brazil v Uruguay = Brazil

France v Germany = France (!!)

Netherlands v Costa Rica = Netherlands

Argentina v USA = Argentina

Final four:

Brazil v France = Brazil

Netherlands v Argentina = Netherlands

3rd Place: France v Argentina = France

Final = Brazil v Netherlands = Netherlands (finally wins their cup!!)

Nice to see everyone still plugging away here...still the most cogent political, economic, ecological and social commentary around! Cheers!

[A partial] list of records broken by England at World Cup - Goal.com

England lost their opening two World Cup games for the first time ever
England have not been eliminated at the group stage since 1958
England failed to win a game at a World Cup for the first time since 1958
Two goals is the lowest tally for England at a World Cup since their tournament debut in 1950
England have not conceded four goals in the group stage since 1958
Uruguay's win over England was their first against a European side in 16 tries - a run dating back to 1970
England have drawn more games 0-0 at World Cups than any other nation, with 11.
England's shot conversion rate of 6.06 per cent is the worst of any side with two or more goals at this year's World Cup
Roy Hodgson has won none of his last five games at World Cups

In an international pool of 47, I put England-Spain in the finals. Will be the last!

Disappointingly, I picked all 8. The recurring scenario : plucky underdog sees its hopes dashed at the finish. Not a single one of them made it, despite eight hard-fought matches.

Revisions to my predictions? I would tend to down-rate Argentina. Which, all else being equal, promotes the Netherlands to the final. And makes France overall winner. But I haven't seen a full match by Colombia yet...
