Ukraine: President Zelenskiy A Servant of Trump

Two Giuliani fixers face charges in US court | Kyiv Post | [Limited free articles]

In January 2019, Parnas and Fruman then introduced Guiliani to two highly controversial former Ukrainian prosecutors -- former General Prosecutor of Ukraine Viktor Shokin and his successor, Yuriy Lutsenko.

During these meetings, Lutsenko and Shokin alleged that Ukraine meddled in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections on Hillary Clinton's behalf and that the U. S. Embassy in Ukraine, under the direction of U. S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie L. Yovanovitch at the time, was secretly assisting.

[...]

Giuliani was forced to reveal supplied notes of the Jan. 25-26 conversations with Lutsenko to the U. S. State Department, which turned them over to Congress. The notes also included an account of a Jan. 23 phone call with Shokin.

These meetings were organized by Parnas and Fruman and as stated in the notes they were present during these conversations.

Continued below the fold ...

The account suggests that Lutsenko provided the basis for Giuliani's accusations that Joe Biden abused his office during his time as vice president by pressuring then-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to fire Shokin in 2016 to protect his son, Hunter Biden, from criminal investigation in Ukraine.

Lutsenko alleged that Artem Sytnyk, head of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and Sergii Leshchenko, a Ukrainian journalist and then-lawmaker, meddled in the 2016 U.S. elections and Yovanovitch was assisting them by providing patronage.

Among all other claims, Lutsenko said that Sytnyk told his deputy during a trip to an anti-corruption event in Panama that he wants Clinton to win, while Yovanovych sees Sytnyk as the next president of Ukraine.

Two days before Lutsenko, Shokin was interviewed by Giuliani and claimed that Poroshenko "told Shokin not to investigate Burisma as it was not in the interest" of the Bidens. Shokin stated that the investigations stopped out of fear of the United States, and that he had been removed as prosecutor general at Biden's request.

Much of what the two told Giuliani amounted to unsubstantiated claims, later debunked as groundless by U.S. and Ukrainian officials, journalists, anti-corruption activists, and later by Lutsenko himself in multiple interviews.

In their later attempt to promote Giuliani's agenda the two met with oligarch Ihor Kolomoisky, who is close to Zelensky and whose channel led to him being elected. The meeting occurred days after Zelensky was elected president.

OCCRP reported that Fruman and Parnas were introduced to the oligarch by Alexander Levin, a pro-Trump businessman, on the pretence that they wanted to talk about their plan to sell gas to Ukraine.

However, Kolomoisky said in an interview that the two wanted Kolomoisky to help them arrange a meeting between Giuliani and Zelensky.

Zelensky, during an Oct. 10 press conference, while answering a question on why he didn't meet with Giuliani, said "it's not a president's level to meet a lawyer."

Florida Businessmen Who Helped Giuliani in Ukraine Arrested on Campaign Finance Violations | NBC News |

Two Soviet-born business partners from Florida, who made hundreds of thousands of dollars in political donations to Republican campaign committees and helped Rudy Giuliani meet a key Ukrainian prosecutor, were arrested Wednesday on charges tied to campaign finance violations.

Igor Fruman and Lev Parnas were arrested on a four-count indictment that includes charges of conspiracy, making false statements to the Federal Election Commission and falsification of records.

Federal agents took the pair into custody just before they boarded a flight from Washington Dulles International Airport, a senior law enforcement official told NBC News. Their destination was not was known, but officials said the men had a one-way ticket to leave the U.S. Fruman and Parnas appeared in federal court Thursday in Washington, D.C.

The two men were central to Giuliani's efforts to get government officials in Ukraine to investigate business dealings by former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter in the war-torn former Soviet republic.

[]

The big PAC donation in May 2018 was part of a flurry of political spending tied to Parnas and Fruman, with at least $478,000 in donations flowing to GOP campaigns and PACs in little more than two months.

The money enabled the relatively unknown entrepreneurs to quickly gain access to the highest levels of the Republican Party, including face-to-face meetings with Trump at the White House and Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

It is not yet clear when the two men first met Giuliani, Trump's personal attorney. But earlier this year, according to Ukrainian media reports, Parnas and Fruman were spotted in Kyiv, where they were frequent visitors to then-Prosecutor General Yuri Lutsenko, who sought to portray himself as an uncompromising fighter against corruption.

[..]

Several senior U.S. law enforcement officials told NBC News the congressman is former U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas. Sessions lost his re-election bid last year.

USA Today)

In May 2018, Parnas posted a photo of himself and his business partner David Correia with Sessions in his Capitol Hill office, with the caption "Hard at work!!"

Correia and Andrey Kukushkin, a Ukrainian-born U.S. citizen, were also charged in the case. A federal judge in San Francisco ordered Kukushkin held on Thursday pending a bail hearing to determine whether he is considered a flight risk.

In a May 2018 letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Sessions asked for the ambassador's removal, The Wall Street Journal reported last week. In an interview Sunday on NBC DFW's Lone Star Politics, Sessions defended the request he made in a "private letter" to Pompeo as "feedback."

Rudy, Lev and Igor's Excellent Adventure and Their Bizarre Anatevka Video | Tikun Olam |

Rudy Giuliani and his two partners in (Ukrainian) crime, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, enjoyed the mob equivalent of the Last Supper (in this case, lunch) at the Trump International in DC earlier this week.  After their boozed-up parting (after watching the video and their red-faced dishevelment, clearly they'd 'had a few'), the two hopped on a plane with a one-way ticket back to Ukraine.  But the FBI intervened and they were apprehended and thrown in jail before they could make their get-away.

A 2018 video obtained by Jewish Insider ...

Before the lunch ended, the Three Musketeers filmed the bizarre video above, in which they addressed Rabbi Moshe Azman, the founder of the charity, the Anatevka Jewish Refugee Community, which created a real-life version of a fairytale shtetl, Anatevka, created by the Yiddish writer, Sholem Aleichem.  Anatevka was the Ukrainian Jewish village where Tevye and his family lived before they were driven away by anti-Semitic Cossacks and pogroms

Lev Parnas in the Holy Land | Tikun Olam - part 2 |

Lev Parnas also inveigled themselves into a summer 2018 "pilgrimage" to Israel organized by Mike Huckabee.  Among those he partied with according to Haaretz were Yair Netanyahu, the prime minister's foul-mouthed son, and Ambassador David Friedman, who's pretty good with a pickax at demolishing Palestinian homes.  He joined them at a festive gathering at the Jerusalem home of Simon Falic, owner of the world's largest airport duty-free shop chain, and a mega-donor to Netanyahu's political campaigns.

Parnas and Fruman were honored with the Lover of Zion award by Young Israel, an Orthodox pro-settler group, at its annual fundraising gala. House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy was another honored guest at this shindig. He also received tainted donations from Fruman and Parnas.  Haaretz notes:

It's not entirely clear why Young Israel gave Parnas and Fruman special recognition during that event, but one explanation offered by a senior figure in the organization was that the pair "brought Rudy Giuliani" to the dinner.

THE LOVE THAT DARE NOT SPEAK ITS NAME - THE SECRET IN THE CLINTON-YELTSIN PAPERS

A batch of 591 pages was declassified by the Clinton Library between March and July of this year [2018], and released publicly on July 13, 2018. They are transcripts of face-to-face meetings and telephone conversations. Click to read them here.
[...]
This means that the records from 1996 were eligible for release in 2006; the 1999 documents carry classification restrictions which were due to expire in 2009. Why another ten years have passed [BWAH!] without release hasn't been noticed by American reporters nor explained. Russian analysts haven't noticed the delay. Instead, they speculate that the timing of the release now is an American plot. Georgy Bovt claims in Gazeta.ru that the release has been contrived by the Trump Administration, though Bovt isn't clear what their motive is, except to reveal Yeltsin and Clinton agreeing on US Government involvement to sway the outcome of the 1996 and 2000 presidential elections in Russia.
[...]
"The main lesson of the publication of the Clinton-Yeltsin talks," reported Pyotr Akopov in Vzglyad, "is to see once again the difference between the sovereign state which Russia is today, and the semi-colony into which it voluntarily turned itself then."  Is it possible, Bovt asked in his essay  in Gazeta.ru, for Russia to have a non-adversarial partnership with the US in principle?  His conclusion - not then, not now, not ever.

APsplainin | Anatomy of the phone call now IMPERILLING Trump's presidency

Trump says it was an innocent, "perfect" call. But some White House staffers, worried that Trump seemed to be asking Ukraine for dirt on Biden, sounded alarms. They suggested the memorandum of the call -- "telcon" for short -- be transferred into a restricted server, usually reserved for documents about covert operations.

This call, as well as others Trump has had with foreign leaders, was unusual in other ways, too. In past administrations, top foreign policy officials routinely briefed a president in person right before a call and provided written materials as well.

But every head of state has been a "servant" of the president of the USA since christ Roosevelt joined WWII and his Allies instituted the IMF. Zelenskiy merely drew the shortest straw of the lot.

I've been politically conscious since the Vietnam war, but I've been gradually learning nuance since about the 1980s.

I would imagine (I haven't researched the matter) that Zelenskiy is learning to tread a fine line between appeasing Trump and Putin. He seems to be making some progress with the latter.

Most world leaders will have given up trying to appease Trump, because of his attention span problems.

Sure they do. Here are two more.

House Committee on Rules
Majority party in this chamber makes its rules. The majority can and does change rules at any time in committee, often ratified by quorum.
Senate Committee on Rules and Administration
Majority party in this chamber makes its rules. The majority can and does change rules at any time in committee, often ratified by quorum.

Referring to 45-year-old house or senate rules (1974, 1998) for guidance to impeachment procedure (2019) is nonsensical. The majority party in the house can define "high crimes and misdemeanors" (articles of impeachment) however they want. The US constitution does not require the senate to proceed from referral of articles by the house. Also, impeachment is not a trial. It's a morality play for public consumption. I for one have been looking forward to the curtain rising since 1 Jan 2019.

How do legislators of the Netherlands remove a PM from office? Does the assembly form a committee to draft rules of order once per GE or each session? Or are such rules codified in the constitution of the Netherlands?

You all remember the 2006 House Rules, dontcha.
A Democrat-controlled House wouldn't impeach, Pelosi says, 13 May 2006
Pelosi, who Republicans have charged intends to lead an impeachment effort, dismissed the idea when she spoke Wednesday morning at a closed-door caucus of the House's 201 Democrats. Pelosi also restated her opposition to the idea of censuring Bush over his decision to invade Iraq in March 2003.
Pelosi, who is likely to become the first female House speaker if the Democrats win in November, has been FORCED to strike a delicate balance between her party's left, where the idea of impeaching Bush has found a positive reception, and moderates who say raising the issue would repel voters in the swing districts that Democrats must win to regain the House majority they lost in 1994.

Pelosi already had been cool to a House resolution that calls for creating a special House committee to investigate the administration,

[2006LaRouchhub FFS] Congressman Conyers, who will take over the House Judiciary Committee, the traditional prime mover in impeachment proceedings, is also well prepared to proceed with assembling the evidence required for impeachment. On Aug. 4, 2006, he released a 350-page report, entitled "Constitution in Crisis," in which he identified 26 laws and regulations which the Bush Administration may have violated, matters which he insisted should be taken up by the Congress as a whole, in fulfillment of its responsibilities to the American people and the Constitution.

Conyers's report, by his own testimony, was the result of reviewing tens of thousands of documents and materials, including testimony submitted at two hearings; hundreds of media reports, including interviews with Administration officials; scores of government reports; relevant laws and administrative guidelines; and the Administration's own statements.

proceedings that could lead to Bush's impeachment over such issues as prewar intelligence and warrantless eavesdropping on Americans' phone calls.
"In the Capitol basement yesterday, long-suffering House Democrats took a trip to the land of make-believe," Milbank wrote. "They pretended a small conference room was the Judiciary Committee hearing room, draping white linens over folding tables to make them look like witness tables and bringing in cardboard name tags and extra flags to make the whole thing look official."

And the insults - especially aimed at Rep. Conyers - just kept on coming. The Michigan Democrat "banged a large wooden gavel and got the other lawmakers to call him `Mr. Chairman,'" the snide article said. [For the full flavor, see the Washington Post's "Democrats Play House To Rally Against the War," June 17, 2005]

The issue resurfaced after Pelosi appeared Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." Host Tim Russert pressed her on Conyers' push for his impeachment resolution, notable because as the ranking minority Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, Conyers is in line to become committee chairman next year if the Democrats pick up the 15 seats they need to win a House majority.

Russert asked her: "Is impeachment off the table?"

Pelosi said, "Well, you never know where the facts take you, but -- for any president -- but that isn't what we're about. What we're about is going there and having high ethical standards, fiscal soundness and a level of civility that brushes away all this fierce partisanship."

Pelosi: 'Impeachment is off the table', 22 Oct 2006
"Yes, it is a pledge," she said. "Of course it is."

Pelosi called impeachment "a waste of time," and suggested Republicans -- who have controlled the House for 12 years -- would make political hay out of it if Democrats tried to impeach Bush.

"Wouldn't they just love it if we came in and our record as Democrats coming forth after 12 years is to talk about George Bush and Dick Cheney? This election is about them. This is a referendum on them. Making them lame ducks is good enough for me."

Pelosi: Bush Impeachment 'Off the Table', 8 Nov 2006
"I have said it before and I will say it again: Impeachment is off the table," Pelosi, D-Calif., said during a news conference.
[...]
"Democrats pledge civility and bipartisanship in the conduct of the work here and we pledge partnerships with Congress and the Republicans in Congress, and the president -- not partisanship."
[...]
She also extended an olive branch to Bush on the war in Iraq, saying she plans to work with him on a new plan but will not support the current strategy and supports beginning redeployment of troops by the end of the year. Pelosi also said she supports the idea of a bipartisan summit on the war.
Conyers and Feingold Announce Judiciary Hearings on Bush Admistration Policy in Both Senate and House, 26 Jan 2007: "Neither of the Constitutionally mandated oversight hearings will be held in a basement broom closet, but rather in proper Congressional Hearing Rooms."
House Sends Impeachment to John Conyers, 11 June 2008: "By a bipartisan vote of 251-166, the full House of Representatives sent Dennis Kucinich's 35 Articles of Impeachment to the Judiciary Committee."
HOLD THE PHONE ... christ Obama and Panic of '08 called.
Conyers Explains Why He Didn't Push Impeachment, January 2009
While Nancy Pelosi swore she would never impeach in May 2006 in response to a statement from the Republican National Committee, Conyers continued to hedge and fudge and prevaricate enough that a great many people worked hard to elect Democrats they disliked to Congress, in hopes that Conyers would become chair of the Judiciary Committee and impeach.

Ukrainian efforts to sabotage Trump backfire | Politico - Nov. 2017 |

The Ukrainian efforts had an impact in the race, helping to force Manafort's resignation and advancing the narrative that Trump's campaign was deeply connected to Ukraine's foe to the east, Russia.

[...]

Shulyar said her work with Alexandra Chalupa "didn't involve the campaign," and she specifically stressed that "We have never worked to research and disseminate damaging information about Donald Trump and Paul Manafort."

But Andrii Telizhenko, who worked as a political officer in the Ukrainian Embassy under Shulyar, said she instructed him to help Chalupa research connections between Trump, Manafort and Russia. "Oksana said that if I had any information, or knew other people who did, then I should contact Chalupa," recalled Telizhenko, who is now a political consultant in Kiev. "They were coordinating an investigation with the Hillary team on Paul Manafort with Alexandra Chalupa," he said, adding "Oksana was keeping it all quiet," but "the embassy worked very closely with" Chalupa.

In fact, sources familiar with the effort say that Shulyar specifically called Telizhenko into a meeting with Chalupa to provide an update on an American media outlet's ongoing investigation into Manafort.

Telizhenko recalled that Chalupa told him and Shulyar that, "If we can get enough information on Paul [Manafort] or Trump's involvement with Russia, she can get a hearing in Congress by September."

[On July 31, 2016, Andrea Chalupa was interviewed by Hromadske's Nataliya Gumenyuk about Alexandra's e-mails being hacked.]

MI6 accused of thwarting effort to solve 1961 killing of UN chief | The Guardian - 4 hrs ago |

MI6, the secret intelligence service, is under pressure to share its files on the mysterious death of a UN secretary general who was killed in an air crash almost 60 years ago.

Dag Hammarskjöld died with 13 others in September 1961, when his plane crashed near Ndola, in what was then Northern Rhodesia. There has been speculation that the plane was brought down deliberately. A film released this year, Cold Case Hammarskjöld, a winner at the 2019 Sundance film festival, has continued to stir interest.

Now a report from Mohamed Chande Othman, a former chief justice of Tanzania who was appointed by the UN to review any new information relating to the case, suggests that Britain is dragging its heels.

Putin changes the channel on Ukraine - Politico.eu
Ever since protesters in Ukraine toppled their Moscow-leaning president in 2014, Russian state television channels have depicted the country as a hotbed of fascism led by a "junta." In one infamous broadcast, Channel One, the Kremlin's flagship station, falsely accused Ukrainian government forces of crucifying a 3-old-year boy.

And so when Russian President Vladimir Putin declared this month that Kremlin-funded television channels should give Ukraine a break, it was seen by many as something of a stand-down in his country's conflict with Kyiv.

"We shouldn't paint our closest neighbor, this fraternal nation ... in an unflattering light," Putin told the Valdai discussion club, an annual gathering of Russian and Western foreign policy experts. "This is wrong." He admitted that there is "something lacking" in Russian state television's coverage of Ukraine.

Even before Putin's remarks, Russian state television had been toning down its aggression. The term "junta" had all but disappeared from broadcasts, while on September 15, in a notable departure from usual programming, there was not a single report devoted to Ukraine on either of the two main weekly news roundups.
Putin's orders to television chiefs to tone down the rhetoric is partly a bid to prepare Russians psychologically for the reintegration -- at least on paper -- of the Donbas into Ukraine. "This is a signal that Ukraine is not the hell on earth that it was painted to be. After all, we can't reintegrate Donbas into Ukraine if the country is some neo-Nazi hell," said Baunov.

Not trying to be flippant, but what information does the title of the thread relate to?

Expected you would find the link by reading this stuff. Reading between the lines ... Zelenskiy, the actor, was even more surprised than his master about the dust the call kicked up! The Ukrainians always ready to please as  Poroshenko was obliged to the Democrats, Obama, Biden and Nuland.

Zelenskiy says what Trump wants to hear

And how did Zelenskiy respond? He said exactly what Trump wanted to hear, complimenting him and even referring to him as a "great teacher." Zelenskiy readily agreed to Trump's wishes. At that moment, Zelenskiy -- the Servant of the People -- became the Servant of Donald Trump.

Granted, politics is always about competing interests. But in his conversation with Trump, Zelenskiy hardly stood up for his country's priorities. Instead, he seemed fixed on appeasing the American leader. He neither asked Trump for US investments in his war-torn country, nor for the backing of his comprehensive reform agenda that he has promised Ukrainians.

This stuff about briefing or releasing transcripts of phone calls between world leaders... Bojo and the Yankees have that in common... it's frankly horrifying.

But it wouldn't surprise me if Zelenskiy indeed said exactly what he imagined Trump wanted to hear. And I don't blame him for that. What it translates into in terms of actions is another question.

I don't have time to read all the links. The problem I have with your diaries is that they're not very synthetic.

The businessman, Lev Parnas, is a close associate of Giuliani and was involved in his effort to investigate Trump's political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, who is a leading contender for the 2020 Democratic Party nomination.

Giuliani said Parnas' company, Boca Raton-based Fraud Guarantee, whose website says it aims to help clients "reduce and mitigate fraud", engaged Giuliani Partners, a management and security consulting firm, around August 2018. Giuliani said he was hired to consult on Fraud Guarantee's technologies and provide legal advice on regulatory issues.

Career diplomats testify despite White House resistance | The Guardian |

It's the week that diplomats you've never heard of are attending closed door hearings in Washington to testify before the House intelligence committee, which is taking the lead on the Trump-Ukraine impeachment inquiry.

But their very obscurity (for the average outside-the-beltway peasant), and the in-camera nature of the hearings, is of vital importance. Open hearings with big names can be illuminating and move the dial in investigations, whether it's Trump-Russia or Trump-Ukraine, or whatever. But there's no denying they often descend into a partisan circus.

Yesterday career diplomat and former top Russia aide, British-born Fiona Hill, who has worked during the administrations of no less than six presidents, gave testimony for almost 10 hours. Some of the details that were later disclosed by indiscreet politicians are absolute dynamite.

Today it's George Kent, whose title, ordinarily, would be an eye-glazer - Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs. But in the circumstances, with the White House trying to stop officials from testifying, folks like these are pure gold to investigators looking for sober facts about what the president's henchmen have been up to, where, when, with whom and why. The White House apparently attempted to block him, to no avail.

"worked during the administrations of no less than six presidents", eh? Earlier this week in Fiona's wikiwtf article she was the daughter of a coal miner and a nurse. m'k. I see, that story is "developing."

Far out! 💫

Quite a bit too dark for me! Vietnam deserter Clifford Gaddy .. escaped via the Soviet Union ... KGB Andropov .. Sweden the American Deserters Committee (ADC) ... run by Lyndon LaRouche ... infiltrated by any and all renowned foreign Intelligence agencies Swedes, CIA and KGB. Assassination of Olof Palme unsolved ... spooks usually stay aloof from news highlights and politics ... best to take her testimony and make choice of the bin or lighter. 😖

Swedes are still busy in search for alien submarines in coastal waters suspect the Russians of course. This week NATO's Stoltenberg frantically traveled from capital to capital ... covering acts and decisions by Trump and NATO partner Turkey ... is searching for a mental asylum to recover. 🤣

DC's Atlantic Council Raked in Funding from Hunter Biden's Corruption-Stained Ukrainian Employer While Courting His VP Father
As Biden parries Trump's accusations, some of the former vice president's most ardent defenders are emerging from the halls of the Atlantic Council, which featured Biden as a star speaker at its awards ceremonies over the years. These advocates include Michael Carpenter, Biden's longtime foreign policy advisor and specialist on Ukraine, who has taken to the national media to support his embattled boss.

Even as Burisma's trail of influence-buying finds its way into front page headlines, the Atlantic Council's partnership, chile, with the company is scarcely mentioned. Homing in on the partisan theater of "Ukrainegate" and tuning out the wider landscape of corruption, the Beltway press routinely runs quotes from Atlantic Council experts on the scandal without acknowledging their employer's relationship with Hunter Biden's former employer. ...

Effigy of Jewish tycoon left at Ukraine synagogue | JPost - 4 hrs ago |

Israeli ambassador to Ukraine Joel Lion asked police on Thursday to find and punish people who left a red paint-spattered effigy of tycoon Ihor Kolomoisky, who holds a Ukrainian Jewish community leadership post, on the steps of the main synagogue in Kiev.

Kolomoisky, one of Ukraine's richest men, is in the public eye over his business ties to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who came to fame as the star of TV show on a channel Kolomoisky owns. The tycoon has been in a protracted legal battle with the authorities over control of Ukraine's biggest bank.

Since revelations of the theft came out with the bank's nationalization in 2016, Kolomoisky has been living in Switzerland and Israel, saying that he fears his rights to leave the country would be restricted if he returned. However, this Thursday (May 2019), his private jet landed in Dnipro from Israel. [Source: OCCRP]

Kolomoisky is president of the United Jewish Community of Ukraine, one of several Jewish community bodies in the country.
