Icon Che Guevara Replaced by Qassam Soleimani

Trump created a hero for the Muslim Shia community - a legend is born.

Assassination elevates Soleimani as icon of resistance | France24 |

Portraits of Qasem Soleimani have been carried aloft in rallies from Gaza to Yemen, raising the prospect that his violent death will elevate him as an icon of anti-American resistance.

The powerful Iranian commander, who was buried on Wednesday, was hailed as a "living martyr" in the Islamic republic for his military and strategic exploits that included halting the Islamic State group as it rampaged across Iraq and Syria.

Soleimani spearheaded Iran's Middle East operations as head of the Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force, masterminding Shiite proxy militias, and some Sunni allies, in a career that saw President Donald Trump brand him a "monster".

After his assassination at the age of 62, in a US drone strike in Baghdad, some observers say his martyr status will grow, rendering him a figurehead for the disparate pro-Iranian groups that he guided and fostered.

"The shock factor isn't so much that Soleimani has died -- he was after all in many battles -- but the way the US president has taken ownership of this will create that type of zeal and drive and commitment across the Middle East," said Ellie Geranmayeh from the European Council on Foreign Relations.

Soleimani was a polarising figure, even within his own country, and pro-Iranian forces have their own agendas and strategies, but the dramatic nature of his death could serve as a unifying force.

Soleimani: The `Muslim Che Guevara' dies, but revolutionary culture continues | PressTV - Iran |

"A people without hate cannot triumph over a brutal enemy." - Che Guevara

The assassination on Iraqi soil of Iran's Qassem Soleimani will produce many things, and global resentment and hatred for Washington is undoubtedly already one of them.

Around the world the assessment is the same: Washington has committed an act of war. In their bloodlust to reverse Iran's popular and democratic revolution - in order to keep feeding their bottomless neo-imperial greed -  Washington has electroshocked the world into remembering its brutal immorality: one remembers the pain of doctor's needle with more clarity than the pain of a week-long illness, after all.

There will be so many ramifications to this cowardly, illegal, inhuman act - which so nakedly aims to be of profit solely to the US elite and not the average American - that we should take time to historically assess the true legacy of Soleimani: he is the Muslim Che Guevara.

He is not merely the "Iranian Che Guevara" because that makes no sense given Che's ideals: Just like the Argentinian, Soleimani spent many years of his life fighting US imperialism in many countries and ultimately died in a foreign land out of his certainty in the reality of international brotherhood.

"The Kings is Dead ... Long Live the King!"

It's not how the Empire judges a rebel, it's the prerogative of the populace how they view their "hero". Let historians do the final ruling ... it may take decades or even a century to come to a conclusion. Revolution and counter revolution seem to be part of social evolution. Are we gaining freedom or losing freedom in the perpetual war on terror initiated after 9/11, causing a higher level of deaths each year.

There Is Zero Actual Evidence Iran Is Responsible for Killing Hundreds of Americans | Common Dreams |

I do recall during the latter years of conflict when the Americans and especially the British in Basra were attacked by roadside IEDs, the blame was laid by the Shia militia. Iran was blamed for providing crucial parts - a terror patent? In times of occupation by a foreign power, resistance by the people and guerilla tactics can be expected. Deal with it.

Remember the poor delivery of troop carriers because of lack of military funding by Rumsfeld et al.!

Rumsfeld under fire for 'hillbilly armour' used to defend army | The Independent - Dec. 2004 |

Hours after President George Bush reiterated that soldiers in Iraq would get everything they needed, Congress released a report showing that only 6,000 of the near-20,000 Humvees in service in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait were fully protected.

Artifacts as "Snapshots in Time" | Army Museum |

In late 2003 as the war in Iraq shifted from armored combat to fighting a growing insurgency on the ground, Soldiers found themselves increasingly in danger as they moved about in soft-skinned Humvees. Never intended for front-line combat, the M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or "Humvee") provided virtually no protection from small arms fire or from the expanding use of improvised explosive devices (IED). In response, units began adding protection of their own, placing sandbags on their floorboards and welding on a creative variety of steel plating to the sides of vehicles utilizing whatever was on hand. Such temporary expediencies became known as "haji armor" or "hillbilly armor" and were intended to bridge the gap until the Army could provide better armor options and increase the number of armored Humvees in Iraq.

And I for one remember when US quit broadcasting casket delivery from SE Asia, the Gulf, and rollcall studio portraits "fallen" in Iraq at the end of evening news.

Accurate enumeration is not the point of those messages.

I doubt I'll ever see a German border agent wearing a Soleimani lapel pin (yes, I did see one with a Guevara one).

Authoritarians do like BIG events ... inaugurations or death. Communism, atheism and a theocracy don't mix. However, what's in an image?

Exit On the Left

It is said that on 18 October 1967, nine days after Che was killed, Castro delivered a eulogy for Che, to a million people gathered in the Plaza de la Revolucion in Havana, and, among other things, this too he said, "They who sing victory over his death are mistaken. They are mistaken who believe that his death is the defeat of his ideas, the defeat of his tactics, the defeat of his guerrilla concepts ... If you want to know how we want our children to be, we should say, with all our revolutionary heart and mind: We want them to be like Che."

Naturally, a lot of us pesky Iranian socialists got a good giggle back in October when the Iranian government, just before the fortieth anniversary of Ernesto Che Guevara's assassination in Bolivia, organized a conference with the title, `Che like Chamran', intended to emphasize the similarities between Iran's Islamic revolution and the socialist revolution in Cuba. Che's daughter Aleida and his son Camillo were the highlighted guests at the conference.

As reported in a 3 October IPS article from Tehran, the `Chamran' part of the conference's title refers to, "[Mostafa] Chamran, a United States-educated engineer and Islamist, who helped Mousa Sadr found the Amal Movement in southern Lebanon and fought alongside Amal guerrillas in the late 1970s. Appointed the young Islamic Republic's defense minister by Ayatollah Khomeini, Chamran organized and led paramilitary forces during the early phase of the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988) and was killed in battle in the Khuzistan province in 1981."
