Cliff edge, COVID vaccination, what else to expect next year?
We're talking about treating very, very large populations, which means that you're going to see the usual run of mortality and morbidity that you see across large samples. Specifically, if you take 10 million people and just wave your hand back and forth over their upper arms, in the next two months you would expect to see about 4,000 heart attacks. About 4,000 strokes. Over 9,000 new diagnoses of cancer. And about 14,000 of that ten million will die, out of usual all-causes mortality. No one would notice. That's how many people die and get sick anyway.

Americans are unused to prosecuting Presidents, but it really can be done. South Korea does it all the time. Out of 12 Presidents total, four have been convicted, a full 33%. All four living ex-Presidents have been convicted. You can do this America. Just follow the true leader of the free world, the Republic of Korea.

Children around the world should not worry about the logistics of Christmas present delivery while the coronavirus pandemic rages, Dr Anthony Fauci said - because he vaccinated Santa himself. "I took care of that for you," the top US infectious diseases expert told CNN. "Because I was worried that you'd all be upset. "So what I did a little while ago, I took a trip up there to the North Pole. I went there and I vaccinated Santa Claus myself. I measured his level of immunity, and he is good to go. He can come down the chimney. He can leave the presents, he can leave, and you have nothing to worry about. Santa Claus is good to go."

UK Health Service Apologizes For Making Santa Desperately Ill With COVID-19 In PSA
Officials from the U.K.'s National Health Service have apologized for a controversial ad featuring Santa Claus desperately sick with COVID-19 that angered some parents. The public service announcement, which was yanked from YouTube, featured a gravely ill man with a white beard being rushed into the emergency room of an NHS hospital. He's clearly in distress and cared for by a crew of caring professionals. The mystery man eventually bounces back to (apparent) sleigh-riding recovery, and his nurse discovers he's St. Nick.

People commenting on social media were disturbed by the images of a seriously ill Santa and concerned about the video's impact on children

Furthermore the claim it would cause the R-rate to increase from 1.39 to 1.93 🙃🙃

On CNN interview how to handle new strain?
Follow rules of hygiene: wash hands, keep distance and wear a mask.
Is a curb on all incoming flights necessary?
We have seen that doesn't work, the mutant is already here. Develop the vaccines and start inoculation.
I agree.
The two earliest sampled genomes that belong to the B.1.1.7 lineage were collected on 20-Sept-2020 in Kent and another on 21-Sept-2020 from Greater London. B.1.1.7 infections have continued to be detected in the UK through early December 2020.

Scientists, meanwhile, are hard at work trying to figure out whether B.1.1.7 is really more adept at human-to-human transmission--not everyone is convinced yet--and if so, why. They're also wondering how it evolved so fast. B.1.1.7 has acquired 17 mutations all at once, a feat never seen before. "There's now a frantic push to try and characterize some of these mutations in the lab," says Andrew Rambaut, a molecular evolutionary biologist at the University of Edinburgh.

Icelandic Government: Border measures to be reviewed by 15 January The Icelandic Government has announced that current border measures to limit the influx of COVID-19 infections will remain mostly unchanged until 1 February next year. These measures include a choice between a fourteen-day quarantine period or a double screening process, with a five-day quarantine required between a border test and a second test. However, as of 10 December, arriving passengers who have already recovered from a COVID-19 infection will exempt from border measures if they can provide proof of prior infection.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Re-infection by a Phylogenetically Distinct Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Strain Confirmed by Whole Genome Sequencing
Epidemiological, clinical, serological, and genomic analyses confirmed that the patient had re-infection instead of persistent viral shedding from first infection. Our results suggest SARS-CoV-2 may continue to circulate among humans despite herd immunity due to natural infection. Further studies of patients with re-infection will shed light on protective immunological correlates for guiding vaccine design.

Belgium suspends UK flights, trains over virus strain The abrupt decision came a day after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a lockdown for London and parts of southeast England to at least 30 December. He linked a surge in Covid-19 cases in those areas to the new strain of the coronavirus that he said could be up to 70% more infectious than the others seen so far. Belgium's travel suspension from the UK would affect flights and the Eurostar train service that runs from London. It follows a similar ban declared by the Netherlands.

BERLIN (AP) -- One by one, several European Union nations banned flights from the U.K. on Sunday and others like Germany were considering such action, all in hopes of blocking a new strain of coronavirus sweeping across southern England from establishing a strong foothold on the continent. The Netherlands banned flights from the U.K. for at least the rest of the year while Belgium issued a flight ban for 24 hours starting at midnight and also halted train links to Britain, including the Eurostar. Austria and Italy said they would halt flights from the U.K. but did not say exactly when that would take place. Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said on Twitter that the government was preparing the ban "to protect Italians" from the new coronavirus variant. About two dozen flights were scheduled to arrive in Italy on Sunday, most in the northern region of Lombardy but also to Venice and Rome. German officials, meanwhile, said they were considering "serious options" regarding incoming flights from the U.K. and the Czech Republic imposed stricter quarantine measures from people arriving from Britain.

Covid: France and Germany among nations banning flights from UK
In Germany, an order from the ministry of transport said planes from the UK would not be allowed to land after midnight on Sunday, although cargo would be an exception. Health Minister Jens Spahn said the UK variant had not yet been detected in Germany. France has suspended all travel links with the UK for 48 hours from midnight. It said the period should be used to provide a co-ordinated European response.

Meanwhile, the US ski-equipped Basler aircraft flew 2,200km from the US McMurdo research station to Australia's Wilkins Aerodrome to pick up an Australian doctor. It then flew to the ski-way near Davis, where it picked up the patient and returned to Wilkins Aerodrome. An Australian Airbus A319 transported the patient back to the Australian city of Hobart on Christmas Eve.
The expeditioner was at Australia's Davis research station in east Antarctica when the mission began.

Republican Louisiana Congressman-elect Luke Letlow, 41, dies from COVID-19 just days before being sworn in - as US hits new daily death record of 3,700 Luke Letlow, Louisiana's incoming Republican member of the U.S. House, died Tuesday night from complications related to COVID-19 only days before he was due to be sworn into office. Ahead of being diagnosed with coronavirus, Letlow held multiple campaign events, including meet-and-greets where people did not wear masks although they appeared to be standing six feet apart. On December 19, Letlow said he was undergoing treatment at St Francis Hospital in Monroe. Three days after being admitted, his office said he had been transferred to Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport Academic Medical Center. At the time, the married father-of-two was in stable condition and was being treated Remdesivir and steroids - the same treatment President Trump was given. Letlow, who was due to be sworn into office on Sunday, died on Tuesday night.

Members of Congress send mixed messages on getting vaccinated The vaccine became available to Congress about a week before Christmas, after the National Security Council announced Congress would be allotted doses of the vaccine to protect "continuity of government operations." "If they were considered a priority to keep the country going, then they need to take the vaccine so they can be healthy and well to keep the country going," said Dr. Simone Wildes, an infectious diseases physician. Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota said it was "shameful" for members of Congress to get vaccines ahead of frontline workers and declared that she would wait until they do to get her own.

The EU has secured the ability to shut off gas and electricity supplies if the UK tries to seize control of disputed fish stocks in future, experts are warning. The sanction - which would hike prices and possibly trigger blackouts - makes a mockery of the prime minister's claim to have "taken control" of British waters in his trade agreement, they say.

The Falkland Islands are back in the spotlight after being excluded from the UK-EU trade deal, meaning the British overseas territory will not benefit from commercial, tax and customs advantages that have been negotiated, Products coming from the islands to the EU could now face tariffs, following the UK's departure from the bloc. It's a major concern for the economy of the islands, which exports 90% of its fish to Europe. Local residents hope to eventually maintain the status quo, as 60% of the local government revenue comes from the fishery-related sector and 40% of GDP is dependent n this special relationship with the EU. Teslyn Barkman, a member of the Falklands Legislative Assembly told Euronews their request is incredibly simple: "We just want to continue to be able to trade in a way that benefits us and benefits the EU,. So, from the EU our calamari is enjoyed in Italy, in France, and everywhere someone can go and enjoy some gorgeous top-quality squid and we want to keep these opportunities flowing.
