Does Finland show the way to universal basic income?
But for governments and politicians examining whether a basic income is worth it, how much the scheme might cost is still the factor they overwhelmingly focus on.

That's a point made by Professor Bernhard Neumärker, director of the Department for Economic Policy at the University of Freiburg and a supporter of universal basic income.

"When it comes to basic income, the science is a long way behind society," he says. "Politicians feel uncertain about it, so find easy arguments, such as saying everyone will become lazy or that there is no way to finance it. Then it's case closed, next topic."

But he argues increasing public pressure could force politicians to begin to think differently about the problem, particularly in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.

Indro Montanelli: Statue of controversial journalist defaced in Milan - BBC
The statue of a famous Italian journalist who defended colonialism, Indro Montanelli, has been daubed with red paint and defaced with the words "racist, rapist" in Milan.

Anti-racism protesters claimed the attack and posted a video on Instagram.

They said the statue must be removed from the Milan park named after him.

Montanelli, who died in 2001, admitted having bought and married an Eritrean girl, 12, during army service in the 1930s.

He raped a 12-year-old girl. They built him a statue. - Giulia Blasi
Dismissing the experiences of women and minorities is quite literally the oldest trick in the patriarchal book. By turning the debate into one about public decorum and respect for a statue, Italy's male-dominated ruling class is avoiding the real issue: how the victims of Italy's deep-rooted racism and misogyny are systemically silenced through ridicule, shame or outright violence.

Montanelli's story sits at the intersection of politics, class, gender and race -- and it has never been more relevant than it is today, as activists across the world force uncomfortable conversations around discrimination and historical legacies of racism.

So much for eating cake...

 From the article:

After more than three years in which the German chancellor repeatedly emphasised her openness to a deal that would maintain the UK's current flows of trade with the bloc, she suggested the door leading to such a compromise had now closed.

It has apparently never crossed the British journalists' mind, even from The Guardian, that the "openness" was always linked to a "level playing field" and the UK had to agree to essential rules to keep access to the EU single market.

Now, is it the Continental side who decided they wouldn't agree to these rules?

The economic recession will be deep and long ...wisdom is lacking. BoJo and his Conservatives are strongly allied with Trump's America. Trade policy and goods standards will be easier with the US than with the EU. The UK assumes the ties with the EU remain strong due to Five Eyes, security, intelligence, defence and NATO ties. Capitalism crosses all borders.

Britain's talks with the biggest economy in the world will not be a walk in the park

The U.K. and U.S. will launch trade talks, but they carry high risks for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is under heavy pressure not to buckle to U.S. President Donald Trump's demands on food standards and health.

A deal with the United States was long viewed as a Holy Grail by British politicians who wanted to pull the U.K. out of the European Union and deepen ties with the global Anglosphere.

Food standards are the least of the problems. Any UK-US deal will hinge on tax treatment of US megacorporations and on financial services agreements. Good luck working those out in three months in the middle of an economic and financial disaster.

Trump is going to be too busy trying to get re-elected to conduct a trade negotiation.

Republicans in Congress are too busy trying to save their asses to approve any trade treaty.

Democrats in Congress don't want to give Trump any positive media so they will stall any trade agreement in the House.

So:  forget it.  Nothing will happen until 2021.

Joe Biden Promised to Bring Stability Across Syraq (2007)   by Oui @BooMan on Feb. 14, 2016

Continuing the decades long slide from Social-Democracy and Labour into the camp of far-right, Islamophobia and Nationalism. Biden thinks he'll survive the onslaught by the Tea Party Republicans under president Trump without the Progressive Movement of Bernie Sanders? Text-Only NPR.org : Scientists Warn CDC Testing Data Could Create Misleading Picture Of Pandemic

In addition, combining antibody testing with diagnostic testing could reduce the number of tests that appear to be producing positive results, lowering the overall "positivity rate." That's another important benchmark. The World Health Organization has recommended a positivity rate of 10% or less as a signal of whether enough testing is taking place.

"I suspect it will artificially lower the percent positive," wrote Caitlin Rivers, an epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, in another email to NPR about the CDC testing data.

Death Sentence Khashoggi Killers to be Commuted?

Sons of murdered Saudi journalist Khashoggi 'forgive' killers | Dawn - Pakistan |

Khashoggi -- a royal family insider turned critic -- was killed and dismembered at the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul in October 2018, in a case that tarnished the reputation of de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

His family's pardon could spare the lives of five unnamed people sentenced to death over the murder in a December court ruling that exonerated two top aides to the crown prince.

"On this holy night of this blessed month (of Ramadan)... we the sons of martyr Jamal Khashoggi announce we forgive and pardon those who killed our father," the Washington Post columnist's son Salah Khashoggi said on Twitter.

Saudi authorities did not immediately comment on the legal ramifications of the announcement from Salah, who resides in the kingdom and has denied reports of a financial settlement with the government.

"What this essentially means is that the killers will avoid capital punishment since that is a right the family (under sharia law) has to forgive," Ali Shihabi, a Saudi author and analyst close to the government said on Twitter.

In the statement, posted on Friday, Salah Khashoggi said his family pardons those who took the reporter's life in 2018 when he visited Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul.

"In this blessed night of the blessed month (of Ramadan) we remember God's saying: If a person forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is due from Allah."

"Therefore, we the sons of the Martyr Jamal Khashoggi announce that we pardon those who killed our father, seeking reward God almighty" he added.

The War Nerd: How Many Dead Yemeni Nobodies Does It Take To Equal 1 WaPo Contributor?
But the thing is, that wasn't the bloodiest mess MbS and the Kingdom were involved in. And Khashoggi wasn't the only maimed body left in the wake of MbS's "reform" policies.

Not by a loooooong shot. There was this other thing going on: The Saudi-led invasion and blockade of NW Yemen, the mostly Shia highland provinces of Yemen. That bloody massacre started in March 2015, and it's been killing untold (and I do mean "untold") hundreds of thousands since then.

How many people have died horrible deaths in Yemen since 2015? The official sources like WaPo and NYT and BBC used to fix on a static figure: 10,000 dead.

Everyone laughed at that one. Every knew it had to be much, much higher, but that just annoyed our news sources of record. So they tried fudging the numbers with the face-saving formula "at least" 10,000, but even buzzards sometimes gag, and people got sick of hearing such an obvious callous lie.

So by now, how many Yemeni Shia nobodies are dead? How many inconvenient corpses, disproportionately children (because they're always the first to die in a famine) are buried, untold, in that rocky ground?

Nobody even tries very hard to guess anymore, because nobody in the Western media is interested.

Citizenship law: Is India using COVID-19 emergency to arrest protesters?
Indian police have arrested two student activists, who in February participated in mass demonstrations against a controversial citizenship act. Activists say the law discriminates against the country's Muslim minority.

Devangana Kalita and Natasha Narwal, who are part of the Pinjra Tod women's rights initiative, were arrested by police on May 23. The court, however, granted them bail, rejecting a police request for the women's detention.

The judge noted that Kalita and Narwal only participated in demonstrations; they did not commit any acts of violence.

But they were re-arrested a day after their release. A special investigation team booked them under charges of murder, attempted murder, rioting and criminal conspiracy.

India, China troops clash at Himalayan border, 'casualties on both sides' - Reuters India
NEW DELHI/SRINAGAR (Reuters) - India's army said on Tuesday 20 of its soldiers had been killed in clashes with Chinese troops at a disputed border site, in a major escalation of a weeks-long standoff between the two Asian giants in the western Himalayas.

China's foreign ministry confirmed there had been a "violent physical confrontation" on Monday in the border area. It made no mention of casualties but India's foreign ministry said there had been casualties on both sides.

India-China clash: 20 Indian troops killed in Ladakh fighting
India's external affairs ministry accused China of breaking an agreement struck the previous week to respect the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Galwan Valley.

BBC diplomatic correspondent James Robbins says violence between two armies high up in the Himalayas is very serious, and pressure will grow on the two nuclear powers not to allow a slide into full-scale conflict.

China did not confirm any casualties, but accused India in turn of crossing the border onto the Chinese side.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said India had crossed the border twice on Monday, "provoking and attacking Chinese personnel, resulting in serious physical confrontation between border forces on the two sides", AFP news agency reported.

North Korea says it sees no point in maintaining Kim-Trump ties | Al Jazeera |

Ri said in retrospect that the Trump administration appeared to have been focusing only on scoring political points while seeking to isolate and suffocate North Korea, and threatening it with preemptive nuclear strikes and regime change.

"Never again will we provide the US chief executive with another package to be used for achievements without receiving any returns," he said. "Nothing is more hypocritical than an empty promise."

EU regulator recommends approving remdesivir as first Covid-19 treatment
The price of the drug in the region is not yet known. In the United States, it could be priced up to $5,080 (€4,532) per course, while Indian generic drugmakers will sell the treatment between 5,000 rupees to 6,000 rupees (€59-€71).

The EMA endorsement, which comes just weeks after a speedy review, means physicians can prescribe the Gilead drug, to be branded Veklury, in Europe once approved by the European Commission, which usually follows CHMP recommendations.

scarce, precious fluids
The U.S. has bought nearly the entire global [!] supply of the antiviral drug remdesivir, the only treatment licensed to treat COVID-19, as the nation continues to experience surging cases of coronavirus.
The Trump administration announced this week the U.S. struck an agreement with Gilead to secure more than 500,000 treatment courses of the drug for American hospitals [!] through September.
Ohid Yaqub, a senior lecturer at the University of Sussex, called it disappointing news.

[Andrew Hill, senior visiting research fellow at Liverpool University] told The Guardian that the UK could get access to remdesivir through a compulsory license, which overrides the intellectual property rights of the company. This would allow the UK to purchase from generic companies in Bangladesh or India where Gilead's patent is not recognized.

Brazil's embattled president, Jair Bolsonaro, has come under further pressure after his political idol Donald Trump imposed an travel ban on non-US citizens coming the South American country in response soaring number of Brazilian coronavirus cases.

The US announced the measure on Sunday as the number of recorded cases in Brazil rose to more than 363,000 and the death toll nearly 23,000.

Las Vegas Sands Chairman Sheldon Adelson Told President Trump That China Trade War Could Cost Him Reelection

Las Vegas Sands (NYSE:LVS) chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson reportedly cautioned President Donald Trump that escalating the trade war with China could be detrimental to the US economy and hinder the president's 2020 reelection bid.

Adelson's motivations for wanting cooler heads to prevail in the US/China trade war are clear. Las Vegas Sands operates five casinos in Macau, the lone Chinese territory where gambling is legal. Its stock is highly correlated to headlines related to the Special Administrative Region (SAR). Shares of LVS slid nearly 3% last month.

LVS has had a Macau footprint since 2002, and is now one of the peninsula's dominant operators. The company generated nearly two-thirds of its 2018 revenue in Macau. US gaming companies in Macau, including Sands, face renewals of their licenses in 2022.

While analysts believe those permits will be renewed, LVS isn't taking any chances, pledging to spend $2.2 billion to renovate its venues there and aid in the SAR's quest to increase its convention and non-gaming tourism industries.

Republican Socialism is the movement to revive our dying communities, both urban and rural, by using Federal dollars to fund local, community-driven projects, particularly in low-income areas. It is a movement to unite Kansans who are tired of the status quo. It is about the coalition between good-neighbor Republicans and common-sense Socialists. Both coalitions want to pitch in, take care of each other, and have meaningful work that enriches our lives, rather than jobs with long hours and low wages to further enrich billionaires.

The systemic solutions offered by Socialists are meant to benefit those on the losing end of the ever-widening economic gap. These solutions will benefit Kansans, but only if we ensure the local administration of these solutions that Republicans so often emphasize. We need Federal money flowing into low-income areas and placed into the hands of local people who can make informed decisions based on their intimate knowledge of their communities and priorities.
