Israel and A Presidential Election

Offering President Joe Biden another metro station in East-Jerusalem and a new settlement on occupied Palestinian land?

Extreme rightwing candidate Gideon Saar offered his credentials in recent interview with CNN's Amanpour. I was totally surprised she asked leftwing Socialist questions which clearly dumbfounded this person running for Israel's successor to plain rightwing PM Bibi Netanyahu.

Mr. Saar expects the Biden administration will keep the assurances Trump and especially Jared Kushner gave to Netanyahu, Mohammed Salman and Khalifa bin Zayed. Not International Law applies to Palestinian territory, but the corrupt White House policy of Quid pro Quo is new Israeli Law.

Another delusion leader awaiting to arrive on the stage of an ally in the Middle East, the "only" democracy. I beseech the Lord and wisdom to citizens to turn away from violence and travel a Path of Peace.

Saar Threatens, Elkin Bolts: Is it the Beginning of the End for Bibi?

Vowing to thwart US-style chaos, Sa'ar slams Netanyahu's attacks on institutions | Times of Israel |

Gideon Sa'ar, the leading challenger to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the run-up to the March elections, accused his rival on Saturday of overseeing "a focused attack on all of the institutions of the state" and vowed to prevent in Israel the kind of assault on democracy witnessed in the US this week.

Sa'ar, a former Likud minister who quit the party a month ago to set up his own "New Hope" party ahead of the March 23 vote, said the mob invasion of the US Capitol on Wednesday "teaches us about the dangers of extremism" and the dangers of "claiming elections are being stolen before and after the vote. "People "draw conclusions that destabilize democracy," Sa'ar told Channel 13 news. "It's very dangerous."

Meanwhile Yisrael Beytenu party chief Avigdor Liberman said the storming of the US Capitol by Trump supporters was "nothing" compared to what he claimed Netanyahu was planning if the premier feels he's losing the coming elections.

Wilders failed to disclose €175,000 donation to pay for hate speech trial | NL Times |

... The donation came from the International Freedom Alliance Foundation (IFAF), an United States-based foundation founded by Wilders himself.

.... While the trial against Wilders, in which he was charged with hate speech for saying he wants "fewer Moroccans" in the Netherlands during a political campaign, is not specifically mentioned, FTM considers it obvious that the donation was for the Wilders trial.

... IFAF's sole director, American philanthropist Robert Shillman, declined to answer FTM's questions. As did Geert-Jan Knoops, the lawyer that represented Wilders in the hate speech trial.

In Dutch politics, large donations amount to €10k or above. Members of parliament must give full disclosure of every donation above €50.

Bloggers are aware Wilders operates close to populist rightwing parties both in support of Israel or just as easily the extremist anti-semites. A cross-section of Trump supporters.

How Geert Wilders Became America's Favorite Islamophobe | FP |

At a dinner at the Reagan Presidential Library in June 2009, a then-relatively obscure Dutch MP named Geert Wilders was being honored as a "hero of conscience" by an organization called the American Freedom Alliance, which purports to defend Western values.

After cocktails and a three-course meal, the lanky Dutch lawmaker with the shock of peroxide blond hair got up to give what by then was his standard speech. Its core message? That Islam is not a religion, but "first and foremost, an ideology; to be precise, like communism and fascism, a political, totalitarian ideology, with worldwide aspirations." There is no such thing as "moderate Islam," he continued, because "Islam's heart lies in the Quran and the Quran is an evil book." He then laid out his plan to combat this evil: a stay on immigration from Muslim countries; the expulsion of criminal foreigners and, following denaturalization, criminals with dual nationality; the closing of Islamic schools ("for they are fascist institutions"); and a ban on the construction of mosques.

Israel must bear consequences of its Trump love affair | Ynet News |

After the mob stormed the Capitol last week, those in Jerusalem who identified so completely with the president and his values must now face the fallout of such adoration and their transformation of Israel into a wannabe GOP state.

As Donald Trump's popularity plummets, even his most skilled supporters have been unable to separate him and his conduct from the mob that attempted the takeover of the Capitol last week, intending to block the certification of the 2020 election results.

During Trump's term in office, Israel took on the form of a livid red Republican state with complete synergy between the White House and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who gladly welcomed the benevolence of the administration after eight years of Barak Obama.

Anyone questioning the wisdom of this close alliance was seen as unpatriotic and the Mideast peace deals embraced by Netanyahu were interpreted as a free pass to advance all of the prime minister's policies.

Israel was so filled with admiration for the American president that it even named a new community on the Golan Heights after him.

...
Trump's many supporters in Israel were not asked to cast a vote for him in any ballot. They, like tens of millions of conservative Americans accepted his control over the Republican party and its transformation into the epitome of Trumpism.

If the events that unfolded on Capitol Hill last week were shocking and heartbreaking, so should the love affair between Netanyahu and the outgoing president break all of our hearts.

Meet Rebekah Mercer, the deep-pocketed co-founder of Parler, a controversial conservative social network | CNN - Nov. 15, 2020 !

Rebekah Mercer, a prominent conservative donor, revealed Saturday that she is helping to bankroll Parler, the rapidly growing but controversial conservative social media platform that was at the top of App Store charts last week.

Mercer is the daughter of Robert Mercer, a hedge fund manager and the co-founder of the now-defunct political data-analysis firm Cambridge Analytica. The Mercers have been prominent supporters of President Donald Trump and conservative causes.

"John and I started Parler to provide a neutral platform for free speech, as our founders intended, and also to create a social media environment that would protect data privacy," Mercer said in a statement on the platform. "The ever increasing tyranny and hubris of our tech overlords demands that someone lead the fight against data mining, and for the protection of free speech online. That someone is Parler, a beacon to all who value their liberty, free speech, and personal privacy."

The U.N. exposes the limits of the Trump peace plan with the Taliban

Under the so-called peace agreement signed with the Taliban by the Trump administration (but not by the government in Kabul), the Taliban is supposed to guarantee that the territory it controls is not used for international terrorism against the U.S. and its allies. To do so, presumably the Taliban would shut down the al-Qaida infrastructure in their territory.

The United Nations issued a report this month on the state of the Taliban and their relationship with al-Qaida.

Restoring Iran nuclear deal is good for Israel | JPost - opinion |

The Biden administration, to be sworn in on January 20, will have to deal with many urgent issues at home and abroad and to repair the rubble left behind by the Trump administration. For Israel, despite the existential importance of reaching a two-state solution with the Palestinians and preventing a binational catastrophe, there is no more urgent priority at the moment than a return to the 2015 nuclear agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) between the world powers (P5 +1) and Iran. This will immediately stop the prospect of Iranian nuclear breakout, which has become a very real possibility since the Trump administration's abandonment of the agreement.

...
During the negotiations on the returning to negotiations, Iran will continue unmonitored to accumulate enriched uranium (it already has 12 times the amount of enriched uranium it had when Trump violated the agreement), and add sophisticated cascades of centrifuges. In addition, there is no chance that Iran, Russia and China will agree to return to negotiations before ending the JCPOA related sanctions which were unilaterally renewed by Trump.

There is great urgency to return to the agreement also due to the June elections in Iran in which the pragmatic camp, currently led by Iran's President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, is facing candidates backed by the Revolutionary Guards. The Revolutionary Guard candidates are extremists who prefer that the Iranian economy continue to falter rather than negotiate with the West and compromise.

The claim against immediate return to JCPOA (compliance for compliance) is that the Biden administration is relinquishing the leverage created as a result of the steps taken by Trump against the Iranian economy. In reality, there are many sanctions - unrelated to the JCPOA - that Biden can use as leverage.

Kochavi signals to Biden: Netanyahu, top security agree on Iran this time | JPost |

Kochavi wanted to make it clear for all to see - the new administration, the Europeans, the Iranians - that this time there is no daylight at all between the security establishment and Netanyahu on Iran.

Kochavi wanted it to be unequivocal that this time the top military echelon is completely in line with Netanyahu on the nuclear deal, and that 2021 is not 2015. And it was obviously important for him to get that message across before the US actually begins to engage with Iran.

In addition, there was importance in getting that message out before the upcoming Israeli elections, in order to stress that Israel's strong stand against reentering the JCPOA is not just the caprice of Netanyahu, but something supported by the country's top generals.

In Israel politics ahead of any election, harsh talk pays out a dividend, especially when it's directed at terror and Israel's enemies everywhere. This election cycle, there will be no large billboards of Bibi with the American president. The disappointment was great in the Knesset and by the PM that Joe Biden won by a landslide. The American insurrectionist traitor has been applauded as a savior and left his (land)marks. Yet Kochavi attacking the most powerful ally in the White House will not have gained voters for Likud in Israel or the diaspora.

Why Kochavi picked a fight with Biden and why it's not good for Israel | JPost |

The problem is that what Kochavi did was make it seem like Israel has no reason to work with the Biden administration. Indeed, he even took a page out of Netanyahu's 2015 speech before Congress and went to battle, instead of first engaging in diplomacy and trying to influence the process from within. Even parts of the speech sounded similar.

In his address, Netanyahu warned Congress: "The first major concession would leave Iran with a vast nuclear infrastructure, providing it with a short breakout time to the bomb. Breakout time is the time it takes to amass enough weapons-grade uranium or plutonium for a nuclear bomb."

On Tuesday Kochavi said: "As of today, Iran has increased its amount of enriched material over what is permitted, has developed and manufactured advanced centrifuges that will allow it to break out faster - in months and maybe even weeks."

In 2015 Netanyahu said: "We all have a responsibility to consider what will happen when Iran's nuclear capabilities are virtually unrestricted and all the sanctions will have been lifted. Iran would then be free to...produce many, many nuclear bombs."

On Tuesday Kochavi said: "The pressure on Iran, partially due to the American sanctions, has to continue. Anything that removes this pressure will give them oxygen, and they will continue to violate the deal. There have to be measures to ensure that Iran will not be able to race to a bomb."

Kochavi was clearly aligning himself with Netanyahu, who didn't waste time on taking credit for himself, explaining during a visit to a vaccination center in Sderot that the chief of staff was simply articulating the prime minister's own policy of doing everything possible to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Foundation linked to Biden pick for cybersecurity gave $500,000 to pro-Israel lobby AIPAC | NBC News |

EDITOR'S NOTE (Jan. 27, 2021, 9:30 p.m. ET): After a number of readers raised issues with this article, NBC News conducted a review and has determined that it fell short of our reporting standards. In order to warrant publication, it needed on-the-record quotes from critics, rather than anonymous ones. The article should have also included more views from those who believe that donations to AIPAC do not represent a conflict. And it did not give Neuberger adequate time to respond to our reporting. NBC News is leaving the article on our website in the interest of full transparency with our readers.

Anne Neuberger was named senior director for cyber policy on the National Security Council. She spent the last decade at the National Security Agency. In 2014, she was assigned the job of Chief Risk Officer. She subsequently served as Assistant Deputy Director of Operations, the lead of the NSA's Russia Small Group, and Director of Cybersecurity.

Personally I have no problem with her assignment at NSC. She seems a skilled manager on both Russian cyberattacks and ally Israel. NSC is quite heavy on the Middle East. She must already have the highest security screening and clearance. Most likely a loss for the NSA, already a men's bulwark.

Optimists speaking of viable diplomacy under the Biden administration.

Riyadh is convinced that Iran is trying to encircle the kingdom with its allied proxy supporters while Tehran views Saudi Arabia as in alliance with the US to undermine the Islamic Republic.

"Riyadh charges Iran with interfering in the internal affairs of sovereign states like Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Bahrain, and Iraq; Tehran sees Saudi Arabia doing the same in these very countries."

They urge both sides to agree - perhaps with the help of the UN - a set of principles around non-interference, the inviolability of national boundaries, rejection of violence, respecting the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations, respect for religious minorities and abandonment of the use of proxy forces to advance national interests. The principles also support the free flow of oil and navigation, and rejection of the procurement of weapons of mass destruction.

Why did Ayatollah Komeini choose exile in Paris? | RFI - Feb. 1, 2019 |

Although there was a popular distaste for the Shah's rule, democratic forces were active in Iran when he went into exile. And Khomeini's Revolutionary Council promised the establishment of a transitional government ahead of parliamentary elections.

When asked if France believed democratic groups would be integrated into the the revoultionary movement, Nicoullaud points out the base of the Ayatollah's support.
"Of course the poorest people were under the influence of the clergy. This is how the clergy came up. And in fact, as in every revolution - we had it in France with the Jacobins and the Girondins, the moderates and the extremists. We had it in Russia with the Mensheviks and the Bolsheviks.

"There is a short moment of unanimity at the beginning of the revolution, when everyone agrees to get rid of the tyrant. After that, all the groups enter into coflict, one with the other. And in the case of Iran, the religious won."

After that, all the groups enter into coflict, one with the other. And in the case of Iran, the religious won.

It is my understanding (but I may remember wrong), that until the students occupied the US embassy in Tehran, CIA was actually helping the mullahs to get rid of the socialists and communists they had a lot of information on (via Savak, which they had trained).
I also recall that the student's radical action was partly due to (perception of) CIA starting operations against the regime. Ironically enough, the students were from left-wing Daftar-e Tahkim-e Vahdat seeking democratic reforms in Iran...

Obviously history abhors absolutes.

Choice between 'New Amsterdam' with Peter Stuyvesant or Liberal cities of Antwerp and Amsterdam. During the German occupation 75% of Jewish citizens died in death camps.

Known as Sephardim (Jews of Spanish-Portuguese extraction), theirs was a complex saga. In December 1496, King Manuel I of Portugal decreed that all Jews leave Portugal by October 1497, causing many to flee to Holland where a climate of acceptance prevailed.

...
After being driven ashore in Jamaica by Spanish ships, twenty-three members of the community, along with a group of Dutch Calvinists, made their way to New Nederland (New York)--another colony run by the Dutch West India Company. Peter Stuyvesant, governor of New Netherland, feared that the indigent newcomers would burden the colony but when he motioned to eject the Jewish newcomers the Company refused his petition (many of the company's shareholders were Jewish).

LBC Radio Host Maajid Nawaz Bankrolled by US Republican Dark Money

LBC radio host Maajid Nawaz, chairman of the counter-extremism think tank, the Quilliam Foundation, is increasingly steeping himself in pro-Donald Trump conspiracy theories circulated by far-right and white nationalist groups - including supporters of the baseless QAnon.

But, while many have expressed surprise at how a former counter-extremism advisor to David Cameron could end up falling for the increasingly deranged ramblings of the alt-right, Nawaz's embrace of its ethos was entirely predictable given that, for most of the past decade, the Quilliam Foundation has been supported by pro-Trump Republican donors through whom it has received some $3 million of 'dark money'.

Israel boasting an assassination ... a PR article to express Jewish superiority and deny American support in the murder beyond giving the green light ... It's just to take the Jewish State of Israel and its leaders to court in The Hague. That too is part of universal democracy.
