The Tory Brexit Pandemic

by Oui Sat Jan 23rd, 2021 at 10:18:22 AM EST

Rotting fish, lost business and piles of red tape. The reality of Brexit hits Britain | CNN News |

For all the fanfare made when Prime Minister Boris Johnson struck a trade deal with Brussels on Christmas Eve, the inescapable reality of leaving the European Union's customs and regulatory territory has already started to bite.

More below the fold ...

Despite Johnson's repeated claims that Brexit is a great opportunity for British exporters and would lead to some kind of revival for free trade, the reality is very different: freshly caught fish are reportedly being left to rot as exporters cannot get them to the European Union while logistics firms are skeptical that both importing and exporting is going to be viable for many businesses in the long term.

Fallout from Brexit and the coronavirus pandemic is pushing the UK economy into a sharp contraction in the first quarter, according to data published Friday by IHS Markit, meaning a double-dip recession is now on the cards.

Coronavirus: UK variant 'may be more deadly' | BBC News |

The data comes from mathematicians comparing death rates in people infected with either the new or the old versions of the virus.

The new more infectious variant has already spread widely across the UK.

Mr Johnson told a Downing Street briefing: "In addition to spreading more quickly, it also now appears that there is some evidence that the new variant - the variant that was first identified in London and the south east - may be associated with a higher degree of mortality.

"It's largely the impact of this new variant that means the NHS is under such intense pressure."

Welfare surveillance system violates human rights, Dutch court rules | The Guardian - Feb 5, 2020 |

Link

A Dutch court has ordered the immediate halt of an automated surveillance system for detecting welfare fraud because it violates human rights, in a judgment likely to resonate well beyond the Netherlands.

The case was seen as an important legal challenge to the controversial but growing use by governments around the world of artificial intelligence (AI) and risk modelling in administering welfare benefits and other core services.

Campaigners say such “digital welfare states” – developed often without consultation, and operated secretively and without adequate oversight – amount to spying on the poor, breaching privacy and human rights norms and unfairly penalising the most vulnerable.

After Brexit, Ireland and France cut out the middleman - Britain

From his office overlooking Cherbourg docks, general manager Yannick Millet points to trailers destined for Ireland that belong to Amazon and FedEx, new customers and a signal of a potential big shift in post-Brexit trade.

Confronted by red tape and delays after Britain's messy exit from the European Union, Irish traders are shipping goods directly to and from European ports, shunning the once-speedier route through Britain.

"You see the shift in supply chains right here," he said.

The many stories about English ladies living in France and buying hundreds of euros worth of clothing or food and then complaining about the duties are a hoot. As if the Brexiteers are living in France and buying hundreds of euros worth of clothing or food.

All those acquainted with Mr Johnson and his casual relationship with the truth will have taken that with a juggernaut of salt. Consider the prime minister's specialist subject of cake. Anyone trying to take a fresh cream cake across the Channel now does so at the risk of having it impounded at customs because it is a dairy product.

A Dutch TV report, which has since gone viral, shows border officials confiscating sandwiches from motorists arriving in the Netherlands from the UK. One driver agrees to surrender the meat in his sandwich, but pleads to be allowed to hang on to the bread. The frontier guard responds: "No, everything will be confiscated. Welcome to the Brexit, sir."

The UK government has successfully managed to convince the majority of the public (e.g. 80% of Tory voters) that the public is at fault because it's not adhering to the rules. Nothing to do with the slow inept government response, of course.

Both Pfizer and AstraZenica short supplying the EU Countries ... EU leaders furious!

EU demands answers from AstraZeneca over vaccine delays | DW |

The bloc's heath commissioner has said AstraZeneca's delay in delivering COVID-19 vaccines is "not acceptable." The EU paid €336 million for guaranteed orders and is angry the company is delivering elsewhere.

Drug firms `must deliver' on Covid-19 vaccine obligations, EU chief says | France24 |

Last week -- after Pfizer's announced delay but before AstraZeneca's -- von der Leyen vowed the aim was to inoculate 70 percent of adults in the EU by the end of August. That goal now looks in jeopardy.

The pace of the EU rollout has lagged behind the United States, Britain and Israel, though member states including Malta, Denmark and France have started to accelerate their programmes.

Netherlands is listed as 34th ... a gross false representation as a large number have died, untested at home because these were rejected for hospital treatment.

True number of Corona deaths would place the Dutch in the Top Ten.

The UK numbers are also understated by about 30% as they do not include deaths outside hospitals and cases where a positive Covid test result is more than 4 weeks old.
