Hong Kong protesters warn of Telegram feature that can disclose their identities | ZDNet |

Hong Kong software engineers have published warnings today against using Telegram to coordinate protests due to an issue in the instant messaging app.

They say the discovered issue can allow a threat actor, such as Chinese law enforcement or intelligence services, to obtain the phone numbers users utilized to register a Telegram account, which authorities can then track down to protesters' real-world identities.

Telegram plays a crucial role in the Hong Kong protests

The app is loved because it supports encrypted anonymous communications, and its group chatting feature has helped users organize protests and pass instructions to all attendees.

Meet Telegram founder Pavel Durov, the 'Zuckerberg of Russia'

Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram messenger app, has taken the world by storm with his bold statements and the record-shattering growth his company has seen over the last few days. The instant messaging app has added more than 25 million users in a span of just 72 hours and is posing a stern challenge to Facebook-owned WhatsApp.

Rise of VKontakte and Durov's ouster

In 2006, Durov founded VKontakte, which later became Russia's biggest social network valued at $3 billion, with his elder brother Nikolai Durov. In 2012, the brothers thwarted their rival Mail.ru's attempts to take over the company.

New country and rise of Telegram

Durov along with his brother left Russia for good, saying the country was not suitable for internet business. They obtained the citizenship of Saint Kitts and Nevis after making a donation of $250,000 in one of the domestic industries.

Telegram was launched in 2013 but they had to move their headquarters to Berlin in 2014. After he failed to receive residential permits for his core team members, he had to move from there too. The company is currently based out of Dubai.

The instant messaging platform has been rising steadily over the years, reaching 100 million users in 2016, 300 million in 2019 and 500 million users in 2021, to which over 25 million more were added recently.

Durov has been taking potshots at Facebook as the latter has found itself in trouble after the issue of privacy. Taking a dig at Facebook, Durov said the "secret" of Telegram's success was: "Respect your users."

Republicans Greeted Joe Manchin's Bipartisan Happy Talk By Demonstrating They Are Insane

Joe Biden pledged unity, but his top priority for our economy is to rig the system so that people are treated differently on the basis of race. The woke commissars who run the government call this `equity,' but separating people into buckets based on their skin color will always be immoral. Janet Yellen has served the public for many years, but I will not support nominees who've indicated they will advance Joe Biden's divisive economic vision for our country. What happened to the idea that the Internet would allow citizen observers to report the truth of what is going on?

The internet is a communication channel, nothing more.  It can be used to tell the truth or to spread propaganda.

Exactly. So there is no differentiation between commentary by idiots and commentary by people who actually know something about what they are talking about. Which is fine for a few people sensible enough to do their own evaluation, and a catastrophe for the bulk of people who are subject to agitprop, conspiracies, marketing-disguised-as-news, outright lies, and manipulation of all sorts.

We are going to end up with censorship and it is going to be nasty.

A congressional oversight committee is investigating whether Parler has financial ties to Russian entities, citing reports that the right-wing social network "allowed Russian disinformation to flourish" before the election and hosted calls for violence before a Trump-incited mob stormed the Capitol on January 6. The committee's chairwoman sent a letter to Parler COO Jeffrey Wernick today, demanding documents on Parler's ownership, potential ties to Russian individuals or entities, and reported negotiations between Parler and the Trump Organization.

... When US hosting services cut ties with Parler for repeatedly failing to moderate content advocating violence, Parler re-emerged on a Russian hosting service, DDos-Guard, which has ties to the Russian government and counts the Russian Ministry of Defense as one of its clients."

Parler users called for "civil war"

Maloney also cited a BuzzFeed report that said, "The Trump Organization negotiated on behalf of then-president Donald Trump to make Parler his primary social network, but it had a condition: an ownership stake in return for joining." Parler offered Trump's company a 40 percent ownership stake but negotiations "were ultimately derailed by the events of January 6," the report said.

"These negotiations reportedly occurred while President Trump was still in office, which experts have warned raise legal concerns regarding anti-bribery laws," Maloney wrote.
