Austria flies Israeli Flag in Support

Austria's new law on `political Islam' opens door for crackdown on Muslims | TRT World - Nov. 12, 2020 |

After a hijab and face veil ban, Austria's right wing government is set to introduce draconian measures against expressions of "political Islam."

Austria's right-wing Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has announced a raft of new measures which would make "political Islam" a criminal offence.

Kurz used Twitter to announce the new policy stating "In the fight against political Islam, we will create a criminal offense called `political Islam' in order to be able to take action against those who are not terrorists themselves, but who create the breeding ground for such."

The announcement caught many by surprise. The draconian measures do not define "political Islam" nor do they lay out the extent that daily Muslim practices and needs could be now criminalized as a result of this new law.

Hungary only nation against EU call for Israel-Hamas ceasefire | EuroNews |

Hungary is the only EU country not to support an EU declaration calling for a ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians, according to the bloc's foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell.

EU foreign ministers met for a special meeting Tuesday to address the surge in violence in Israel and Palestinian Territories, with 26 out of 27 member nations agreeing on a statement.

"The priority is the immediate cessation of all violence and implementation of a ceasefire," said Borrell. "The upsurge of violence has led to a high number of civilian casualties, deaths and injuries, among them a high number of children and women, and that this is unacceptable."

However, Hungary's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told AFP news agency; "I have a general problem with the European statements on Israel (...) They are not of much help, especially in the current circumstances, when the tensions are so high."

Death toll rising as Israel hits Gaza, Hamas hits Israel

At least 212 Palestinians have been killed in heavy airstrikes so far, including 61 children, and over 1,400 people wounded, Gaza's Health Ministry said. Ten people in Israel, including a 5-year-old boy, have been killed in rocket attacks launched towards civilian areas in Israel.

EU statement calls for security, to restore political horizon

Borrell also said in the statement that: "We support the right to defence for Israel and right to security - also for the Palestinians - and we consider that security for Israel and Palestine requires a true political solution, because only a true political solution could bring peace, and to do that we need to restore a political horizon".

US Joe Biden Partners with Israel in Gaza Carnage

EU: Israel's E. Jerusalem policy endangers final-status talks | Haaretz - Nov. 25, 2005 |

Unpublished report, which has been presented to EU council, says Israeli action could 'radicalize' Arabs.

TEL AVIV -- The European Union's diplomatic representatives have sharply criticized Israel's policies in East Jerusalem, saying it is using settlements and the West Bank separation fence to create a "de facto annexation of Palestinian land". The unpublished report warns that the Israeli measures "are reducing the possibility of reaching a final-status agreement on Jerusalem that any Palestinian could accept," The New York Times reported.

United States President Joe Biden wants to focus on the Communist People's Republic of China as his priority, did not want to be involved in the Middle East. Has no capital left to waste on Israel and the Palestinian issue and by absence accepts the policy set by the Trump administration. The JCPOA deal does concern him, but his blunt negotiating style will not get a new deal done before the June elections in Iran. No moderate will be elected, a new Ahmadinejad will replace the current moderates. Never mind, Joe Biden prefers a neocon solution for regime change anyway.

Eleven children receiving NRC trauma care killed in their homes by Israeli air strikes

The Norwegian Refugee Council confirmed today that 11 of over 60 children killed by Israeli air strikes in Gaza over the last week were participating in its psycho-social programme aimed at helping them deal with trauma.

All of the children between 5 and 15 years old were killed in their homes in densely populated areas along with countless other relatives who died or received injuries.

"We are devastated to learn that 11 children we were helping with trauma were bombarded while they were at home and thought they were safe," said NRC's Secretary General Jan Egeland. " They are now gone, killed with their families, buried with their dreams and the nightmares that haunted them. We call on Israel to stop this madness: children must be protected. Their homes must not be targets. Schools must not be targets. Spare these children and their families. Stop bombing them now."

The children NRC assisted included Lina Iyad Sharir, 15, who was killed with both of her parents in their home on 11 May in Gaza City's Al Manara neighbourhood. Her two-year-old sister Mina sustained third-degree burns and remains in critical condition.

Hala Hussein al-Rifi, 13, was killed on the night of 12 May when an airstrike hit the Salha residential building in Gaza City's Tal Al-Hawa neighbourhood. The attack also killed four-year-old Zaid Mohammad Telbani and his mother Rima, who was five months pregnant. Zaid's sister remains missing and is presumed dead.

NY Times' Bret Stephens is editing a new Jewish journal, starting with an issue on 'Jews and social justice' | JTA |

Bret Stephens has taken on a side gig as the editor of a new limited-run journal of essays about Jewish issues.

The journal, titled Sapir, is an initiative of the Maimonides Fund, an increasingly influential force in Jewish philanthropy that supports Jewish identity-building through media, education and Israel engagement. Over the past year, the fund has also become known for its leadership on COVID relief efforts.

The first of four print issues scheduled for 2021 will land in mid-April and will focus on social justice -- a topic Stephens has addressed in columns that criticize progressive efforts.

"Our first issue is on the subject of Jews and social justice," Stephens wrote in an email to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. "This is a complex, controversial, multidimensional topic. We cover it from a variety of angles -- religious, historical, political, ethical -- and a range of political persuasions."

The new journal comes as the Jewish world debates challenges gripping wider American culture, including racism, anti-Semitism, political polarization and the erosion of democratic norms. Stephens has chimed in to lament "cancel culture" and "wokeness."

As I posted earlier ... Biden doesn't want to spend his "capital" on the I-P issue, thereby raising the white flag. The Trump/Pompeo pro-Israel policy remains in place. The single positief decision was to back Jordan King Abdullah II when Israe/UAE/KSA wanted regime change. Biden goes through the motions of a new JCPOA deal with Iran. In the June election a new hardliner will come forward. The new axis of evil for the coming decades will be Iran-Russia-China. Choice of Turkey hangs in the balance and Biden-NATO-EU will toughen their stance. The EU will fold and fall in step with the US-UK coalition. The flag of Israel flying in Austria and Hungary. Populism and authoritarianism will replace the ideals of Democracy. See role of Bret Stephens to wipe off the social and progressive ideals of Judaism. Netanyahu and Trump the great leaders. US State Department calls Erdogan anti-semitic

The United States strongly condemns President Erdogan's recent anti-Semitic comments regarding the Jewish people and finds them reprehensible.

NATO ally Turkey totally rejects this condemnation. Perhaps Blinken will send the EU duo Michel and Von der Leyen on another mission to Ankara?

"Anti-Semitism has never found its way into our society."

In our society, which respects all beliefs and has a culture of peaceful coexistence of different religious and belief groups, Anti-Semitism has never found any prejudice. The lands of our country have been the homeland of many Jews who fled from the Inquisition centuries ago and from the Holocaust during the Second World War. Brave Turkish diplomats helped rescue hundreds of Jews during the Holocaust. Our Jewish citizens have been living in this land for centuries in peace and tranquility, without any discrimination.

Turkey is among the main servers of the UN Human Rights Council resolution that defines anti-Semitism as a human rights violation for the first time. It should also be remembered that anti-Semitism was repeatedly described as a crime against humanity by our President.

Lebanon foreign minister resigns amid Gulf states' anger | Anadolu Agency |

Lebanese Foreign Minister Charbel Wehbe asked to be relieved of his duties amid the Gulf outrage over his recent remarks seen as offensive.

"I have presented to [President Michel Aoun] a request to be relieved of my responsibilities as foreign affairs minister in the caretaker government," Wehbe said in statements cited by the official Lebanese news agency.

There is no confirmation yet about whether Aoun has accepted the resignation of the minister.

Wehbe drew the ire of the Gulf countries after he said in an interview on Monday with the US-funded Alhurra TV channel: "Those countries of love, friendship and fraternity, they brought us Daesh/ISIS," and then going on to describe a Saudi guest as "Bedouin people."

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden apologized to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday over recent remarks he made suggesting Gulf states had supported extremist groups in the region.

Biden also thanked Saudi Arabia for its support in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

"Vice President Biden spoke today with Saudi Arabia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prince Saud al-Faisal," Biden's office said in a statement.

"The vice president thanked the foreign minister for Saudi Arabia's strong support in the shared fight against ISIL [ISIS] and he clarified his recent remarks regarding the early stages of the conflict in Syria. The two agreed that the issue was closed."

Saudi Arabia is the third state Biden has apologized to over remarks he made at Harvard University last week.

He apologized to Turkey and the United Arab Emirates last weekend for having said U.S. allies in the region were partly to blame for the rise of ISIS in Syria.

Perhaps FM Wehbe will return as a future president of Lebanon freed from all foreign power influence.

Biden's meek stance on Gaza ceasefire does little to quell progressive ire | The Guardian |

President stands accused of granting Benjamin Netanyahu impunity as he hews to traditional US support for Israel.

Joe Biden puts his arm around Debbie Dingell as he speaks to her fellow Michigan congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, one of the fiercest critics of his response to Israel's assault on Gaza. (Photo: Nicholas Kamm/AFP/Getty Images)

Biden was left in little doubt about the strength of feeling on the issue on Tuesday when he visited Dearborn, Michigan, home to about 40,000 Arab Americans. The route taken by his motorcade was lined by protesting crowds waving Palestinian flags.

He was greeted there by the local congresswoman, Rashida Tlaib, who has been one of the sharpest critics within the party of his response to the new surge in bloodshed in the region, and has lambasted his administration for blocking three efforts to produce a consensus UN security council resolution in the past eight days.

"Apartheid-in-chief Netanyahu will not listen to anyone asking nicely. He commits war crimes and openly violates international law," Tlaib said on Twitter.

Semites A Proud and Courageous People

by Oui on Thu May 20th, 2021 at 09:11:24 AM EST
Could you please explain what you mean by "semites"? I tried Wikipedia and I got
Semites, Semitic peoples or Semitic cultures was a term for an ethnic, cultural or racial group.[2][3][4][5] The terminology is now largely obsolete outside the grouping "Semitic languages" in linguistics.[6][7][8]
Footnote [6] says
This collection of essays explores the now mostly extinct notion of Semites. Invented in the nineteenth century and essential to the making of modern conceptions of religion and race, the strange unity of Jew and Arab under one term, Semite (the opposing term was Aryan), and the circumstances that brought about its disappearance constitute the subject of this volume.
As a linguistic term, it may make sense, including Arabs, Maltese, and Israelis (but very few non-Israeli Jews). Is this what you meant?

Why a Gaza ceasefire isn't enough | Electronic Intifada - Aug. 3, 2014 |

The death and destruction being inflicted on the Gaza Strip is impossible to describe. Sitting here in Gaza, it is hard to even understand what is happening.

Last week, we witnessed another attack on a United Nations compound where civilians were sheltering -- 17 dead, 120 injured -- and an attack on a market in Shujaiya during the hours of what was supposed to be a ceasefire -- 18 dead, nearly 200 injured.

Today in Rafah, Israel shelled another school run by UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestine refugees, where thousands were sheltering, killing ten. Even the US State Department issued a rare condemnation of Israel, calling the attack "appalling" and "disgraceful."

This is a nightmare. But it is one we know we cannot wake up from.

Egypt and Qatar have been involved in the negotiations over the full 11 days of the violence. The Americans have no standing with the Palestinian people or its leaders.

In the opening press conference, it was astounded to see Hillary Clinton standing by the side of Netanyahu and in full understanding and support of the Jewish people of Israel. Clinton spared some words as lipservice for the rights of the Palestinian people. Benyamin Netanyahu used the press conference as a platform to reach out with pure propaganda and his talking points for domestic purpose only. US and Israel have paid a heavy political price across the global community. Egypt and Qatar were involved in 11 days of negotiations between the two warring parties Israel and Hamas. The US has no standing left with the Palestinian people as a whole. We saw the Palestinian people united behind Hamas, but mostly due to the egregious attacks by the Jewish State on Sheikh Jarrah and the Al Aqsa Mosque. This became a rallying cry across the Islamic world of nearly 1,800,000,000 souls. The international pressure was build up by Jordan, Turkey, Kuwait, Morocco and Pakistan taking the lead. Even China used the position by Joe Biden to unwind global criticism in treatment of the Uygurs Muslims in their fight for independence.

Blinken flew into Europe for the Arctic Council and was hit by universal criticism for the biased position of the White House on the Palestinian issue. Yes the Israeli flag was flown over state buildings in Austria (Vienna) and Hungary (Budapest) and perhaps the Czech Republic. The main North Atlantic allies and Security Council members plus Germany vented unsalted criticism. Biden was pulled into an issue that had no priority for him.  To buy off Europe and the Germans, in an unprecedented manner, Blinken suddenly waived some key sanctions on finishing the crucial Nord Stream II pipeline. This has upset locals in Washington DC and on the Russian frontier - Baltic States, Poland and Ukraine.

Due to the stalemate in the UNSC past 10 days because Joe Biden threatened to use his veto in protecting key ally Israel, the protests across Europe and Muslims in key ally nations threatened to grow and destabilize society. See Bidens visit to Dearborn Michigan where he encountered 40,000 Palestinian flags. What happened in the mix cities inside the Jewish State would have been a universal protest of great proportion. The criticism of so many nations at the meeting of the UNGA irritated Israel in making some very blunt statements about the Institute of the United Nations, key founder of the homeland for Jews in 1948.

A key nation on the Arabian peninsula came with harsh criticism on Israel. The pressure of Europe on the relation with Joe Biden during his term in office and the upheaval of society in many nations with the Muslim community would lead to extremism in the next decade. In the end it was not about Netanyahu or Hamas, but indeed a clash of civilization make a threat. A new Pew poll shows a generational gap in Jewish diaspora in the US and importance of Israel. The under 30s it's just below a majority at 48%. For the older generation it's at 67%.

To illustrate above analysis, the call with president Sisi after a deal was struck was the first conversation Biden had with the key Egyptian leader. Egypt kept close contact with Turkey, Qatar and its big sponsor Saudi Arabia. Not much has changed since 2009, 2012 or 2014. I missed a mention of the Dahiya doctrine from the 2006 atrocities in Beirut and has become a repeated act of war crimes by Israel.

Israel's Dahiya doctrine a war crime.

Dahiya doctrine - atrocities inflicted as punishment on civilians.

A gross propaganda error by the IDF in bombing civilian targets and health infrastructure in Gaza.

Letzte Tage der Menschheit, Akt 2, Szene 10 They were warned.

Analysis: Biden sticks to Israel-Gaza playbook, irking progressives and allies Access to the comments | EuroNews |

With his muted response to the Gaza conflict, President Joe Biden is largely sticking to a time-worn U.S. playbook despite pressure from progressive Democrats for a tougher line toward Israel and from America's allies for a more active role to end the violence.

By citing Israel's right to defend itself against a rocket barrage from the Hamas-ruled enclave and only nudging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu toward a ceasefire, Biden has effectively given Israeli forces more time to press their offensive against Palestinian militants there.

U.S. officials hope both sides will reach a point when they will be ready to wind down their attacks in coming days and that quiet, behind-the-scenes diplomacy involving regional players such as Egypt will help achieve an end to the hostilities, people familiar with the matter say.

However, Biden's effort to cautiously navigate the crisis in the Gaza Strip will be put to the test if in the meantime the fighting increases and the civilian death toll rises sharply.

"There's a playbook that's being followed," said Aaron David Miller, a former U.S. Middle East peace negotiator for Democratic and Republican administrations. "But there's always room for the unpredictable."

In polls only 9% of Israelis supported a cease-fire agreement. Most Israeli's wanted to punish Palestinians in Gaza until Hamas was wiped out.

So the Security Council and PM Netanyahu declare major military win over Hamas. Israel won the battle, lost the war of minds. So senseless loss of lives.

The associated street violence in Israel is probably the important point. How do you deal with a situation where 20% of the population is absolutely furious?

Eyes in Gaza
Posted by ask | Jan 1, 2010 |

Many of BT readers probably recall that the only reports coming out of Gaza during the Israeli incursion exactly a year ago was from Norwegian doctors Mads Gilbert and Erik Fosse.

Israeli authorities were obviously livid that outsiders were actually there to report on the atrocities they were inflicting on the Palestinian population and have campaigned incessantly to vilify the two doctors.

The book has already caused controversy. Especially since the Norwegian Foreign Minister wrote an afterword in the book with praise for Gilbert and Fosse. The Israeli government is "outraged" and strongly criticizes him for doing so.
