Palestinian Rights and E Jerusalem

by Oui Sun May 9th, 2021 at 09:55:38 PM EST

Recently I posted some news about Ramadan and how violence escalated in East Jerusalem, political stalemate after March election, and how European politicians take a knee out of respect for Israel, the occupier. There are a number of rightwing bullies in leadership positions and they get away with a lot.

Canada, Quartet slam Jerusalem violence, int'l pressure grows on Israel | JPost |

"Such actions are a violation of international law and impede the achievement of a peaceful settlement."

Canada and the Middle East Quartet (the United Nations, United States, European Union and Russia) condemned on Sunday the violence that took place on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, and called on Israel to halt eviction plans for Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood as violence rises in the country's capital.

The EU and the US also issued a statement against the violence and the pending Sheikh Jarrah evictions, as did Jordan, Turkey, Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Individual European countries, as well as South African, have spoken out as well.

UK and US Media Remain Silent

I checked the headlines and indeed, major networks do not cover Israel, Jerusalem and the IDF violence at the Damascus Gate and the Al Aqsa mosque during the month of Ramadan. In the UK is some coverage in media - BBC News, Sky News and less so by The Guardian and The Independent. France24 has good coverage, the German DW News is silent as are all Dutch media outlets. In the US the major networks are quite selective with coverage by NBC and CBS. On the other hand, CNN, ABC and the Canadian CBC are silent.

I covered some developments of the Labour party. Well established the harsh accusations Corbyn got during his political career for standing with Palestinians for their basic rights. Keir Starmer is not a leader, but tries to accommodate party members except for those loyal to Corbyn in the past - see my diary:

Keir Starmer Is Sinking In Leadership Role

Lacking courage in this man, easily proven by his 2014 presentation pictured here ...

Apologizing for Solidarity with the Palestinians Has Only Fed the Smears Against the Labour Left

The coordinated campaign by Israel to undermine any criticism domestic or foreign goes quite far.

Shin Betís Campaign Against Palestine

Several major international and Israeli human rights groups have recently issued reports calling Israel an apartheid state "from the river to the sea." This means that Israel has devised a system keeping all non-Jews, whether inside the Green Line or outside (West Bank), under a racist system maintaining them in a state of perpetual oppression. Labeling this unified system as apartheid is an important step toward defining Israel itself as a pariah state in violation of international law and subject to criminal prosecution by the International Criminal Court.

An important tool used by Israel to perpetuate this system is its intelligence apparatus. Both the Shin Bet and Mossad target all attempts by Palestinians inside or outside the Green Line to organize for their national, political rights as hostile to the interests of the state. As far back as 2007, in response to plans announced by Israeli Palestinian NGOs calling for the transformation of Israel into a secular democratic state with equal rights for all citizens.

... Shin Beth policy has been set by successive Israeli prime ministers:

PMO to Balad: We Will Thwart anti-Israel Activity Even if Legal | Haaretz - March 16, 2007 |

The Prime Minister's Office has sent a letter to the editor of the publication of the predominantly Arab party Balad saying it would combat the activity of any group or individual seeking to harm Israel's "Jewish or democratic character," even if that activity was carried out through legal means.

Saudi, UAE issue statements condemning Israel over East Jerusalem tensions

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday voiced their opposition to Israel's plans to evict our Palestinian families from East Jerusalem homes, a land dispute that has contributed to the latest conflagration of violence in in Jerusalem.

"Saudi Arabia rejects Israel's plans and measures to evict dozens of Palestinians from their homes in Jerusalem and impose Israeli sovereignty over them," the kingdom's Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement.

The UAE -- whose normalization of ties with Israel last year inaugurated the historic Abraham Accords --  "strongly condemned" the clashes and the potential evictions, in a statement by the UAE's Foreign Affairs Minister Khalifa al-Marar, and urged Israeli authorities to reduce tensions.

Marar stressed, "the need for Israeli authorities to assume their responsibilities -- in line with international law -- to provide necessary protection to Palestinian civilians' right to practice their religion, and to prevent practices that violate the sanctity of the Holy Al-Aqsa Mosque."

The Colonial powers and the Balfour Declaration has certainly struck home to haunt the region. The British double-cross of the Hashemite King comes to mind. President Biden signed a new military agreement with Jordan. Proxy war is fine elsewhere, but not at the doorstep of the Saudi Kingdom. The role of the UAE is more aggressive with Mohammed Dahlan as NSC adviser to the Sheikh of Abu Dhabi. Hopefully there is some concern for the abuse of Human Rights by all parties in the Middle East. For Europe and especially the French, the total destruction of Lebanon and Syria must be quite painful. The spoils out of the Ottoman Empire from allied "victory" of WWI has seen mostly 100 years of destruction.

Sunni Terror Against Shia Minority Kills 60 Schoolgirls

Afghanistan mourns 60 schoolgirls killed in deadliest attack in years | Arab News |

KABUL: Sixty girls were buried during a mass funeral on Sunday, after a gruesome bomb attack on a school in a poor neighborhood of Kabul a day earlier.

The carnage outside the Sayed ul-Shuhada school in the Shia-dominated suburb of Dasht-e Barchi began when a car bomb detonated as students were leaving classes to break their Ramadan fast.

Witnesses said that as people rushed to take the wounded children to hospital, another explosion and mortar fire tore through the scene, killing some of the rescuers.

"Books and body parts were everywhere ... cries, wailing," local resident Rahim Dad said.

A series of explosions targeted the Sayed Al-Shuhada girls school in Dash-e-Barchi, a west Kabul suburb populated mostly by Hazara Shiites. (AFP)

Over 100 people were wounded in the attack, the deadliest assault in years, coming just a week after a bomb attack killed another 21 children in Logar province, south of Kabul.

Over a century of persecution: massive human rights violation against Hazaras in Afghanistan | OHCHR |

Noticeable by Asiatic appearance, cultural and linguistic differences with Afghans, Hazaras have been carrying marks of ethnic cleansing, land confiscation, slavery and persecution since 1891. A recent study by impartial agency has recorded elimination of about 60% of Hazara population which was occurred only in the dawn of 20th century. Practicing Shiite faith of Islam by majority of Hazaras has been an additional motivation for further suppression, coercion and slaughtering. At the below, some horrific incidents, particularly those occurred in recent years are enumerated.

Far-right MK Gvir vacates Sheikh Jarrah `office' in return for more policing Jewish homes in area

Ben Gvir is a disciple of the late extremist rabbi Meir Kahane [group designated as a terror organization by U.S.] and head of the neo-Kahanist Otzma Yehudit party, which merged into Religious Zionism before the election. He spent many hours in court as a defendant in his youth before passing the bar and going on to represent ultra-nationalist Jews accused of perpetrating racially motivated attacks against Arab Israelis and Palestinians.

Ben Gvir set up his "office" in Sheikh Jarrah where tensions have flared over the last week as dozens of Palestinians are at risk of being evicted following a long legal battle with right-wing Jewish Israelis trying to acquire property in the neighborhood, which is just north of Jerusalem's Old City.

Pro-Palestinian protesters have been meeting for nightly iftars -- the meal held after breaking the day-long fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan -- at long tables set up outside. Ben Gvir set up his table and awning across the street from the iftar meal.

Footage showed an Israeli spraying what appears to be pepper spray at the Palestinian iftar table, apparently leading to a violent clash.

Victory! Capture of East Jerusalem - 1967

Palestinian Land Day - 2021

Land Day commemorates the death of six Palestinians and the injuring of 70 others by Israeli gunfire in Nazareth in 1976 during protests against Israeli land expropriation. Land Day also serves to remind the world of the continued injustice of Israel's historical and ongoing illegal expropriation of Palestinian land.

As we mark Land Day 2021, Al-Haq notes with concern that 15 Jerusalemite families totalling 37 households of around 195 Palestinians, residing in Karm Al-Ja'ouni area in Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood and Batn Al-Hawa neighbourhood in Silwan, are currently at imminent risk of forced eviction. Unlawfully applying Israeli domestic law to occupied territory, Israeli courts have ruled in favour of lawsuits undertaken by settler organisations to evict the 15 Palestinian families.

Toothless statement by EU - as the Clinton-Obama-Biden administration would react: "It's not helpful." How I hate such words when people die in a decades long conflict of promises not kept.

In swipe at Biden, Netanyahu pledges to 'build in Jerusalem' despite `pressure' | JPost |

Prime Minister Netanyahu weighed in on the recent tensions in Jerusalem at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, emphasizing that Israel retains the right to "build in Jerusalem," after the Biden administration criticized the impeding evictions of Palestinian families in East Jerusalem and Israeli construction in the West Bank.

"We emphatically reject the pressures not to build in Jerusalem. Unfortunately, these pressures have been increasing of late. I say even to our best friends: Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. Just as every people builds its capital and in its capital, so too do we reserve the right to build Jerusalem and in Jerusalem. This is what we have done and what we will continue to do," he said, according to a statement from his office.

..
Three times since the beginning of April, US officials reached out to the Prime Minister's Office to express their opposition to Israeli steps to build beyond the Green Line, Channel 12 reported.

Lifta: Register of a People, History, Cultural Heritage, and Struggle

Lifta is a peaceful village situated on the slopes of al-Shami Valley, at the western entrance of the city of Jerusalem. Like other Palestinian towns and villages, Lifta's people were displaced as part of an extensive and premeditated plan of ethnic cleansing in 1948.

Many of Lifta's buildings are still standing to this day, clustered around its historic center or on its peripheries. For various reasons, they were not destroyed like the houses in other towns and villages, and they bear witness to the Nakba of 1948. Lifta manifests various aspects of the development of the Palestinian village: architecture, culture, urban planning, waterworks, vegetation, and creative interaction with the surrounding environment.

Suspend US Aid to Israel: NOW!

This cry for a fair deal for Palestinians has fallen on deaf ears for 73 years ... since 1948 when the State of Israel was carved out of the Middle East by UN Security Council intervention with conditions for the Palestinians that were never met.

Israel has a partnership with the EU ... the selective criticism of  global HR violations and applying economic sanctions is, unfortunately a part of alliances and a foreign policy tool ... not based on universal solidarity with the oppressed.

Israel-Palestinians: Old grievances fuel new fighting | BBC News |

Some new ideas have emerged. Two respected think tanks, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the US/Middle East Project have just released a joint report arguing that the first priority should be equal rights and equal security for both Palestinians and Israelis.

It says the United States should support "full equality and enfranchisement for all those residing in the territory under Israeli control; it will not endorse two separate and unequal systems".

Hamas, which controls Gaza, says it has been acting to defend Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque from Israeli "aggression and terrorism" after the site, which is holy to Muslims and Jews, saw clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians on Monday that left hundreds injured.

The past few days have seen the worst violence in Jerusalem since 2017. It followed mounting Palestinian anger over the threatened eviction of families from their homes in occupied East Jerusalem by Jewish settlers. Tension had already been stoked by a month of altercations between protesters and police in the predominantly Arab part of the city.

VIDEO: Joe Biden tells ShalomTV 'I am a Zionist' (Published August 2008)

Biden in 2007 interview: I am a Zionist | Ynet News |

Regarding the terror attacks in Israel, Biden said the Sept. 11 attacks made American parents feel what Israeli parents have been feeling. "The difference between now and before 9/11," he said, "is that many Americans can taste what it must feel like for every Israeli mother and father when they send their kid out to school with their lunch to put them on a bus, on a bicycle or to walk; and they pray to God that cell phone doesn't ring."

Morocco parties condemn Israel's attacks in Jerusalem

The Moroccan Justice and Development Party and the Arab Maghreb Scholars League (AMSL) yesterday condemned the Israeli attacks in Jerusalem while expressing unconditional solidarity with Palestinians.

In its statement, the Justice and Development Party, which heads the government coalition, condemned "the attacks against the residents of Jerusalem in Damascus Gate and in separate areas of occupied Jerusalem," stressing firm support for the Palestinian people.

The party also called on all forces in the country to "undertake initiatives that contribute to empowering the rights of Jerusalemites in their land and strengthening their steadfastness in the face of violations committed by the occupation."
