Ukraine's Debt Problem Spells Trouble | FT - Feb. 26, 2021 |

If the government continues to pile up debt without necessary reforms, it will set its economy on the road to ruin.

Ukraine has a growing debt problem that the government under President Volodymyr Zelensky is only making worse. The International Monetary Fund's financial support for Ukraine is conditioned on the country making various reforms that will reduce its dependence on international assistance in the future. Kyiv, however, appears to be looking for ways to circumvent the IMF's conditions while still tapping into the market for government debt.

Ukraine divided over legacy of Nazi fighters | TOI - Aug. 1, 2013 |

Ukrainians dressed in Nazi SS uniform trudge through trenches and fire model rifles in a reconstruction of a key battle against the Soviets during World War II. An Orthodox priest leads a ceremony for fallen soldiers of the Nazi unit, sprinkling his blessing over several men sporting swastikas who lower a coffin in a ritual reburial.

The scenes were part of commemorations last week of soldiers many Ukrainian nationalists -- along with a smattering of hardcore ultra-rightists -- hail as heroes. The men they are honoring belonged to the SS Galician division, a Nazi military unit made up mostly of Ukrainians, which fought Soviet troops during World War II.

More than 20 years since gaining independence from the Soviet Union, Ukraine remains painfully divided over the legacy of World War II and the actions of Ukrainian nationalist fighters, who are honored as heroes by some and condemned as traitors by others. Some of those fighters served under or cooperated with the Nazis, seeing a chance to overthrow the Soviet regime, while others fought both the Red Army and the Nazis.

Belarus: fourth package of EU sanctions over enduring repression and the forced landing of a Ryanair flight

The Council today decided to impose restrictive measures against 78 Belarusian individuals and 8 entities. This decision was made in view of the escalation of serious human rights violations in Belarus and the violent repression of civil society, democratic opposition and journalists. Moreover, seven individuals and one entity subject to this new round of restrictive measures were designated in connection to the forced and unlawful landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk, Belarus, on 23 May 2021, endangering aviation safety, and the detention by Belarusian authorities of journalist Raman Pratasevich and Sofia Sapega. Among those targeted are also several prominent business figures who support and benefit from the Lukashenko regime. These sanctions therefore send a further strong signal to the backers of the regime, that their continued support for Aleksandr Lukashenko comes at a substantial cost.

'Rendered' in a coffin: The Untold Story of Dirar Abu Sisi

Thursday, 31 May 2012 | Article: Center for Political Development Studies - CPDS

Dirar Abu Sisi, still being held in solitary confinement in an Israeli jail, was born in 1969 in Jordan. He is the Deputy Engineer for the Gaza Strip's sole power plant, which produces 25% of Gaza's total electricity needs. In February 2011, he traveled to the Ukraine, his wife's country, to apply for citizenship. He disappeared in Poltava on February 19, and later turned up in an Israeli prison.

Abduction and Rendition

On the evening of February 18, after filing the papers for citizenship, Abu Sisi was on a train heading to the Kiev airport for a reunion with his brother Yussef, who lives in the Netherlands and whom he had not seen in 15 years. Just outside the city of Poltava, a man, who the family believes was Ukrainian security agent, entered the train and removed Dirar. After that, he disappeared. His wife Veronika, who was also in Ukraine at the time, did not hear from him for a week. During that period of silence, she summoned the Ukrainian press and said she believed that the Mossad had kidnapped him. On February 27, the Palestinian Interior Ministry demanded that the Ukrainian Interior Ministry disclose the reasons for his disappearance.

Afghan war closet: 'US had decided to overthrow Taliban regime a month before 9/11' | Dawn News |

Even a month before the 9/11 attacks, the US administration under President George Bush had finalised a strategy to overthrow the Taliban regime by using direct action.

Referring to a meeting of top national security officials in August 2001, Steve Coll, an American journalist and author of Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001, wrote that the US had effectively decided to provide covert military aid to anti-Taliban groups, more particularly to the group in Northern Alliance affiliated with Ahmed Shah Massoud.

"The meeting decided to present an ultimatum to Taliban to hand over bin Laden and other al-Qaeda operatives. If the Taliban refused, the US would provide covert military aid to anti-Taliban groups. If both those options failed, the officials agreed to overthrow the Taliban regime through more direct action."

Has the US just handed over Afghanistan to the Taliban? | DW News |

The Taliban are not the only threat to Afghan forces; other militant groups, such as "Islamic State" (IS), have also gained a foothold in the war-ravaged country.

"The Taliban are stronger than ever. IS and other terrorist groups have gained a foothold in Afghanistan. Therefore, the consequences of a hasty and irresponsible withdrawal from Afghanistan could be dangerous not only for Afghanistan but also for the region and the world," Raihana Azad, a member of the Afghan parliament, told DW.

'No excuse for war'

Concerns is great that gains made over the past two decades, especially in the area of women's rights, could be lost as the Taliban unleash further violence. It is unclear whether the Taliban would agree to protecting human rights and freedom of speech in Afghanistan.

"The US has made too many concessions to the Taliban. The Afghan people will pay the price for it. They are disheartened and feel abandoned by the international community," lawmaker Azad said.

Another Western policy failure, a twenty year of sacrifices by Afghan people for naught. A massive slaughter to take place in closing months of 2021.

Biden-Ghani meeting: Afghan president makes last-ditch effort to stop Taliban gains

UN Special Envoy on Afghanistan Deborah Lyons said Tuesday that the Taliban have captured more than 50 of 370 districts in the country since May.

"Those districts that have been taken surround provincial capitals, suggesting that the Taliban are positioning themselves to try and take these capitals once foreign forces are fully withdrawn."

Conclusion: making war is easier than making peace. No stability and security in Europe for the foreseeable future. More military action and less economic growth ... the EU too in decline and greater wealth for the political elites. Too much corruption at all levels ...

Positions of Two NATO Ships Were Falsified Near Russian Black Sea Naval Base | USNI |

According to an automatic identification system (AIS) signal, which transmits position details to improve maritime safety, the pair left Odessa just before midnight on June 18. The data shows that they sailed directly to Sevastopol, approaching to within two nautical miles of the harbor entrance. The strategic port houses the headquarters of Russia's Black Sea fleet.

Despite the AIS track, there is clear evidence that the two warships did not leave Odessa.

NATO Games: Russian fighter planes carried out feint attacks on Dutch frigate

The Russians flew "dangerously low and close" over the ship and conducted feint attacks. The fighters were armed with bombs and air to surface nissiles, which are intended to fire at a target from the air. The electronic equipment of the Dutch ship was also disrupted.

Defense speaks of "intimidation practices" and Minister Ank Bijleveld will address Russia about "irresponsible" actions. "Sr. Ms. Evertsen has every right to sail there. There is no justification whatsoever for this kind of aggressive action, which also unnecessarily increases the risk of accidents."

Classified Ministry of Defence documents found at bus stop, 27 June
The documents, almost 50 pages in all, were found in a soggy heap [MEME ALERT] behind a bus stop in Kent early on Tuesday morning.

A member of the public, who wishes to remain anonymous, contacted the BBC when he realised the sensitive nature of the contents.

The BBC believes the documents, which include emails and PowerPoint presentations, originated in the office of a senior official at the MoD.

The documents relating to the Royal Navy's Type 45 destroyer, HMS Defender, show that a mission described by the MoD as an "innocent passage [BWAH!] through Ukrainian territorial waters", with guns covered and the ship's helicopter stowed in its hangar, was conducted in the expectation that Russia might respond aggressively.

What do classified documents found at Kent bus stop reveal about Russia confrontation?, 28 June
Foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova mocked the government, saying: "007 (James Bond) is no longer the same."

"And now a riddle-like question for the British parliament, why do we need 'Russian hackers' if there are British bus stops?" she asked on social media platform Telegram [!].
[...]
Well aware of the spin war to come, officials also discussed how the operation would be perceived. "We have a strong, legitimate narrative," they stated - pointing to the fact that the BBC and Daily Mail journalists on board would help provide "independent verification of HMS Defender's action". Moscow Claimed U.S. Navy P-8A Was Flying Toward Russian Airspace Before Black Sea Intercept | USNI News - Nov. 28, 2017 |

"The crew of the Russian fighter approached a safe distance from the aircraft before identifying it as a US P-8A Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft, the latter having immediately changed its heading to move away from the border," the Russian military told TASS.

A month before, on June 17, 2019, the Ministry of Defense said it had intercepted several B-52 strategic bombers from the 5th Bomber Wing at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, as they were flying in the same region.

Navy defending our values in Russia dispute, says Boris Johnson | BBC News |

A Royal Navy warship was "sticking up for our values" in an incident with Russian forces in disputed waters around Crimea, Boris Johnson has said.

The prime minister said the UK does not recognise Russia's annexation of Crimea and was pursuing freedom of navigation in international waters.

Mr Johnson denied UK relations with Russia were at an all-time low.

He refused to be drawn on whether he had personally authorised the HMS Defender voyage.

The UK's defence attache was "invited to a meeting in the Russian Ministry of Defence" in response to the incident, he added, but HMS Defender would continue with her planned deployment and programme of visits.

"The Royal Navy will always uphold international law and will not accept unlawful interference with innocent passage," said Mr Wallace in his statement, adding that the UK and Nato allies had "enjoyed a routine maritime presence in the Black Sea for many years".

Imposing 'imaginary' values risks EU collapse, Slovenian PM claims | The Guardian |

As Slovenia takes over the EU presidency, its prime minister warns that the west cannot impose its liberal views on Central Europe.

Slovenia's prime minister Janez Janša, a rare EU ally of Hungary's right to outlaw the promotion or portrayal of homosexuality to children, has claimed that imposing "imaginary European values" on central Europe could lead to the union's collapse.

Janez Janša, who publicly backed Donald Trump in his attempt to overthrow the US presidential election result, leads Slovenia as it takes the EU's rolling presidency, steering the bloc's agenda for the next six months. He is a deeply controversial figure, whose political career includes being jailed while battling for Slovenia's independence from Yugoslavia and an overturned conviction for corruption.

"Former Soviet satellite states never integrated in the EU and accepted the founding principles of the European Union."

Thought that was the reason the UK pushed for their membership.  UK didn't want the "ever-closer union" to happen.  Too early inclusion of the former Warsaw Pact nations placed a major barrier to achieving that goal.
