Israel Cyber Mercenaries Become Assassins

by Oui Sun Jul 18th, 2021 at 07:17:07 PM EST

Throughout the years I've covered every aspect of Israel's Unit 8200 and the private corporations such as the NSO Group doing the dirty work for dictators and authoritarian regimes ... they do murder journalists, activists, opposition voices and eco-volunteers across the globe.

Silence in Joe Biden's White House ...

FT editor among 180 journalists identified by clients of spyware firm

Journalists across the world have been selected as possible targets by NSO Group's clients.

A successful Pegasus infection gives NSO customers access to all data stored on the device. An attack on a journalist could expose a reporter’s confidential sources as well as allowing NSO’s government client to read their chat messages, harvest their address book, listen to their calls, track their precise movements and even record their conversations by activating the device’s microphone.

Reporters whose numbers appear in the data range from local freelancers, such as the Mexican journalist Cecilio Pineda Birto, who was murdered by attackers armed with guns one month after his phone was selected, through to prize-winning investigative reporters, editors and executives at leading media organisations. In addition to the UAE, detailed analysis of the data indicates that the governments of Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Hungary, India, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Morocco, Rwanda and Saudi Arabia all selected journalists as possible surveillance targets.

In Whatsapp's lawsuit against the Israeli company, it discovered that NSO maintained servers inside the US [April 2020] and that these servers were quite likely collecting data from individuals inside  the US.  Sen. Ron Wyden suggested during a Senate hearing that NSO could be targeting US government officials

Though individuals were targeted in 50 countries, the majority of the infections were found in only ten,
Amnesty International is today releasing the full technical details of its Security Lab's in-depth forensic investigations as part of the Pegasus Project.

Concerns Among Foreign Diplomats in India as Envoys From Iran, China Listed as Pegasus Targets
India denies claims that it employed the Israeli firm's technology to snoop on political opponents, human rights activists and journalists.

"The basis of this report is that there is a consortium which has got access to a leaked database of 50,000 phone numbers. The allegation is that individuals linked to these phone numbers were being spied upon," India's Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Minister Ashwini Vaishnav told parliament on Monday.

"However, the report says that the presence of a phone [number] in the data does not reveal whether a device was infected with Pegasus or subjected to an attempted hack."
Reacting to the snooping claims, India's federal Home Minister Amit Shah has said that the accusations are an attempt to "humiliate India" on the world stage.

Gott save the journalists from "illegal" Patriot Act national security.

They work in the kitchen, in cleaning, in hotels - and they are transparent. Asylum seekers have no status and no political power. But they are human beings and they have the basic right of man: the right to health. Its realization is our moral duty and also a clear public health interest. Therefore, I instructed the Ministry of Health to promote medical insurance for asylum seekers in Israel.

Computer glitch caused civilian deaths in Afghanistan?

The only other affected weapon system the Air Force identified by name is the U.S. Navy's X-47B, an unmanned combat aerial vehicle demonstrator built by Northrop Grumman. According to the Air Force, the Navy's X-47B program office is losing almost $1 million per day while the vehicle is grounded.

"Until all the affected receivers have been 'inoculated', Government and military users will continue to be impacted," the Air Force said.

The Air Force Space Command's Los Angeles-based GPS Wing has assembled a User Equipment Crisis Action Team to contact military users around the world, including in Iraq and Afghanistan, to verify whether they have any of the affected Trimble receivers in their equipment.

Some 8,000 to 10,000 Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module (SAASM) GPS receivers deployed in a variety of weapon systems are having trouble authenticating a new messaging format implemented as part of an upgrade to the GPS Operational Control Segment, the Air Force said. The prime contractor for the GPS ground system is Boeing Defense, Space & Security of St. Louis.

RQ-170 in Iran

On 5 December 2011, an American Lockheed Martin RQ-170 Sentinel unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was captured by Iranian forces near the city of Kashmar in northeastern Iran. The Iranian government announced that the UAV was brought down by its cyberwarfare unit which commandeered the aircraft and safely landed it.

NYT: Emirati Surveillance Firm Poached NSO Employees

According to the New York Times, DarkMatter is connected to the Emirate's own version of the NSA. The company resides in the same office building that houses the UAE's NSA equivalent, and has worked directly with Emirati intelligence operatives on a number of missions. The report links DarkMatter to the surveillance of Emirati human rights activist Ahmed Mansoor. NSO had also been involved in tracking Mansoor, who is now jailed in the UAE.

Forensic Architecture's "Digital Violence: How NSO Group Enables State Terror"

Earlier this month, Forensic Architecture, Amnesty International and Citizen Lab held an international symposium, Digital Violence: How NSO Group Enables State Terror.  It brought together human rights groups, journalists, legal and cyber-security experts, and victims from a score of countries to highlight the extraordinary danger NSO Group poses to citizens' rights throughout the world.  Among the featured speakers were Edward Snowden and Laura Poitras.  She is one of the key journalists who helped convey Snowden's story to the world.

FA has compiled an enormous and comprehensive archive of the activity of NSO available here. It includes stories from victims, a corporate overview, a ferocious, frightening but powerful sonic rendering of NSO's history produced by Brian Eno.

Israel Oversight by Ministry of Defense

During the program discussion, Israeli human rights attorney, Eitay Mack, who spearheaded numerous lawsuits in Israeli courts against the export of both Israeli weapons systems and cyber-warfare tools to repressive regimes, noted that the Supreme Court had ordered an end to all such cases.  It claimed that because the export of such systems was controlled by the defense ministry that it had "no jurisdiction" in the matter.

Microsoft Denounces NSO Group as 21st Century Cyber-Mercenary, Its New "Zero-Click" Exploit Targets Al Jazeera

Note that the Microsoft statement targets for blame/responsibility not just NSO, but the venture capitalists profiting from its products and conduct.  That would include Franciso Partners and Novalpina Capital, companies which respectively once owned, and currently own NSO.  If governments restrict investments in these noxious products, then it will cut off the financial oxygen the companies need to survive.

This Microsoft statement joins an amicus brief filed by American, and the world's largest technology companies, including Cisco, Google, Dell, Github, LinkedIn and VMware, supporting WhatsApp's lawsuit against NSO.  The suit accuses the Israeli company (and its clients) of hacking the electronic communications of 1,400 human rights activists from around the world.  NSO took billions in sales from repressive regimes in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, enabling them to monitor those posing political threats to their rule.  In many cases, these victims end in prison, bankrupted by bogus criminal court charges, or dead.  Finally, these companies are saying: Enough.
